2019 Honda CB500X | Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2019 Honda CB500X, is this updated middleweight adventure touring bike any good?
There's plenty of changes for this year, some are obviously to tempt new comers to the adventure segment, but there are still plenty of updates for the road rider too.
Many thanks to Honda UK for kindly letting me review this bike.
Please note: The heated grips, main stand and top box are optional extras on this bike.

Quality vid, really nicely edited. This Honda is a class bike, a friend used one of these on a recently completed around the world trip. The bike coped with unpaved roads in Mongolia and did the Dalton Highway in Alaska. He set of on the trip with a KTM 790 and 1290 Adventure accompanying him, both the KTMs broke down in Mongolia while the much cheaper Honda just kept going.

Just changed my oil this evening. IF you own a cb500x 2019, the engine oil drain plug is 12mm.. It's located on the left side of the bike at the rear of the oil drain pan close to the side stand. --Owner's manual says 22 pound feet of torque ( aka 30 newton meters aka 30nm) to tighten it, and yes it's horizontally screwed into the oil drain pan. Part for Fram oil filter is ph6017a, Walmart sells them for under 7 bucks USD, I use gn4 10w-30sj which is supported by Honda per the manual. Cheers.

@@emprrah Very cool. From what I've heard, I don't think there is any difference between the 2019 and 2020. Please let me know if I'm wrong and there is something I'm missing. I have confirmed, if this matters to you involving interstate speeds and max realistic mpg, that a sprocket change ( +1 tooth in the front and -1 in the rear) means you can use the original stock chain. Now if you wait until say easily more than 5k miles maybe 7 to 10 and you right pretty..spiritedly, I recommend replacing that chain when you change out the sprockets. As for me, I ride like a sensible 40 something year old who values mpg over " OO..OOO LEMMIE BE FIRST!! I GOTTA BE FIRST. I GOTTA BEAT YOU TO THE RED LIGHT!! " nonsense. Thus my shifting and overall treatment of the bike is much more gently than some others, and thus my parts will last a little longer. I changed out both of my sprockets around the very early 3k miles mark. No problems at all. Stock front/rear 15t/41 sprockets meant 60mph in 6th gear meant at least 375 to 400 more rpm needed than 16t/40t sprocket set. Yeah I could have gone 36t in the rear, but that probably would have meant needing a chain with at least one or two lengths shortened versus stock to ensure once I applied/adjusted for correct tension, I'd be out of room, and I didn't want to have to deal with that yet. Hit me up if you have any questions and hopefully I can help An older guy named Sven has a youtube channel who has the same also.

This is my second viewing of this video. It’s very good thanks. I haven’t got out much on my pre-loved 2019. The roads have been so wet and dirty. Not to be put off I am investing in a special detailer’s dryer. When I have been out around the lanes, I enjoy the transmission. The clutch and gears feel very intuitive, so it feels very easy to feel one with the bike, which makes it easier to get on with the business on watching what’s going on with the road....

Nice review! I’ve watched many videos and I’m going to start shopping prices for my brand new 2021 here in SoCal. Mud is not of that much concern here and up to 80mph performance is fine with me. I’ve made it 60yrs and I’m not trying to die soon. I do have an older hopped up Yami R6 and a supercharged ‘17 Harley Roadster drag bike for knocking on troubles door. I grew up on Honda’s and have great respect for their engine programs. I’ll put it on a diet, make a few engine and suspension mod’s and try not to kill myself.

I agree with your assessment of this bike. This is my first smaller cc bike after many years of riding 1200cc bikes and I am very pleased with it. It is ideal for the lanes, villages and wilder places of little Britain. I’m getting the top box too, but it’s a pity we lose the pillion grips when we fit the top box bracket. I can see I’ll have lots of fun with this bike. It’s very well balanced and the handle bars only need a light grip, which reduces any vibration. It seems to be amazingly economical. I agree about the slightly snatching first gear. The pick up is good thought the range. The gears are so slick I find I’m checking the gear indicator to see where I’m at in the range. Plenty of power to safely overtake those slow coaches on the smaller roads. Good review thanks.

Hi Dan, I'm downsizing from a 650 and have just put an order in to Bridge Motorcycles for a CB500X. Following your review, just in case there's anyone out there who's just got one, here's how to run one in ( a reviewer at Visordown wasn't sure whether to rev the nuts off it or not ) and my further thoughts about the bike. I've owned and broken in dozens of bikes since I was a despatch rider in London, in the early 70s. Only those using bikes mainly for trackdays, or for racing need use the 'harder the better' approach to breaking in. That is because they want max power from the off knowing the bike will be regularly rebuilt and worn parts replaced every 2000 or 3000 miles. For the rest of us, we want our new bike to last for tens of thousands of miles, to hold its value at resale, and to represent a pride of ownership too. We want to look after our new bike, hopefully. Honda's instructions for the 2021 CB500X are simple: no full throttle starts, and take it easy for the first 300 miles. Given the above, anyone running one in differently risks voiding the warranty if they're found out, shortening the longevity of the motor, reducing the bike's longterm fuel economy, and ending up with a bike that sounds rough, and may prove unreliable. Don't do it. Moving on, the CB500X makes 47bhp, is good for around 110mph (so cruising at motorway legal speeds puts no untoward strain on the engine), returns 75-80 mpg, takes a pillion comfortably, has servicing intervals of 8000 miles, weighs 197kgs (so it's light), has a tank range approaching 300 miles between fills, and is big enough to tour the world on. Power is well sufficient to ride British roads at all legal speeds, and beyond them if you take the bike abroad. The icing on the cake is that with different tyres the CB500X will even handle offroading in the UK. Just don't try muddy lanes with stock tyres. In Canada, and elsewhere they're regularly used for long distance trail riding, so yes, Dan, the bike can and does handle offroading. To sum up, it's my view that there is no better all round bike for sale in the UK right now, and for around £6000, the CB500X is excellent value. If you're looking for a used model, make sure that it's 2019 or later, because that was when Honda considerably improved the bike by increasing the size of the front wheel from 17" to 19", making it far better offroad, than previously. I've just downsized, and put an order in for mine, in matt gunpowder black. I shall run it her in carefully, and I very much look forward to enjoying thousands of miles of troublefree motorcycling onboard. It's no coincidence that Honda have fitted the exact same engine to no less than three other models. Thanks for reading!

Good review. I had a test ride of one of these, and a CBR500R. On both of them, clutch excellent, fuel consumption amazing, engine quite good, gear change excellent. Dash a bit hard to see. Where they differed for me is I thought the CBR500R handles just so much better on the road. The X just felt high up and wobbly. Unless you really want to go off road or have really terrible roads the R (and the F I assume) handles so much better. As for A2 credentials, somewhat dearer a Triumph Street Triple S 660cc A2, has a lot better engine, with the promise of being derestrictable to 94 BHP once an A licence is achieved. Although the Street Triple is a lot harder to insure for newbies and drinks quite a bit more fuel. Your CB650R I believe can be restricted A2 restricted, much nicer engine than the CB500F,R,X , but pretty similar to the Triumph on difficulty to insure . I've asked about them all :)

While it may be good for a video if I damage the bike I have to pay for it. Maybe in the future I can do something with manufacturers permission but for now I'm mainly road based. Cheers and all the best.

Presented very well Dan! Damn it though, now you make me want to get a 2019 or 2020 CB500X! I had the original 2013 model but was rear ended by a car less than two seasons in. Bike was totaled of course with 26,000 miles on the odometer. Luckily, I escaped with no serious injuries and three weeks later purchased a 2014 CB500X. Had the heated grips, handguards and center stand installed by the dealer before delivery. Later, I put on a Scorpion silencer and a taller MRA Touring Screen. Love this bike (still after a few more seasons and 57,000 miles), but you had to go and so brilliantly demonstrate how much better the latest CB500X is! Damn you! ;)

Regarding front brake requiring a good squeeze, remember that for dirt bikes (or dual sports) you don't want to very grabby brake, because it's hard to modulate under bumpy dirt conditions.

Such a great review and of course it would be impossible to say anything that the other 473 comments don't you have a wonderful voice the cinematography the content all fantastic I greatly appreciate what you are offering here after having 1200 BMW GS adventure and now riding around on a Vespa and a Yamaha XMAX 300... Trying to downsize my adventure bike as I reached 60 years of age I am vacillating between the BMW F 900 XR and this Honda CB500X of course I also have my money down to have the first Honda Trail 125 ABS (for who knows WHAT reason... except FUN) the Honda CB is the money of the BMW F and certainly worth more than 50% of what the BMW is of course I have a 28 inch and seem (yes, i had 2 different GS and 2 different GS Adventure bikes and rode them with confidence) but... the F900 can be had with a low suspension and come in at > 2 inches LOWER than the CB500 (which can only be ordered one way) really not sure what to do great videos and I appreciate everything you're doing

Thanks for sharing this great video. It was really informative concerning the bike's on and off road capabilities. Turning almost 50, I am currently considering to buy it instead of my old scooter (Yamaha Xmax 125) and I think the Honda CB 500 X would be a great improvement in both city traffic and light adventure tours at the weekend. I find scooter suspensions awful and primitive so I am getting back to proper motorcycles. I am looking for a reliable little machine of max. 500 cc. I used to have a KTM but I would never buy one again - I guess a little HOnda is a much better choice if you want to ride trouble free. Your video helped a lot to make my decision easier. Thanks again and ride safe. Cheers. Danny from Germany.

I'm in the market for my first (big) bike one that I can do some miles on and take off the beaten track (to a small degree). I had been considering older CB500X with panniers and various crash guards BUT from what I have seen here I think I will go for a newer 2019-2020 model as it looks to be a much better bike. Excellent vid very informative and well made.

Mine don't have abs standard in the USA in 2019... I guess in '21 it's standard. Sucks cause i wanted abs but i live where it doesn't 🌧️☔ much so it's all good. I'm happy with the 🏍️💨 tho i like it more than the '21 Africa twin adventure sport it's too heavy. The cb500x feels so much lighter & easier to ride. Thanks for the review! Very good quality 📽️
