Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly press vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, it's pretty nuts. Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

    Overall good review. I continue to believe that the Mazdas tested by reviewers are at a disadvantage because they aren't "dramatic" enough out of the box. This is the same impression I got with my 2016i GT and now my 2018 Sig. Most of the feedback on the Accord and Camry talk about more responsive and more engaging, but I think this first impression is similar to the way TV manufacturers for instance calibrate their TV's to have a punchy and bright image in the store compared to what people experience in their homes. The Accord and Camry have more aggressive throttle tip-in and arguably "quicker" steering out of the box. I also experienced this with the Alfa Romeo Guilia. No question this quality is, at first, engaging and "fun", but after countless test drives, I found it to be tiring. The "balance" that you refer (and other equally insightful reviews mentioned) results in a car that can be engaging AND relaxing to drive. Also supports Mazda's "jimba ittai" philosophy. Also believe that the Mazda's ecu learning is better served by having one driver at the wheel during it's break-in and over thousands of miles. Case in point. I originally found my 2018 6 to have some weird engine behavior (inconsistent throttle response and some tranny hesitation) when new. As I've put more miles on the car both characteristics have smoothed out and the car appears to be learning my driving style (and my learning how it behaves) for the better. Having owned a 2016 iGT with the N/A engine I can confidently say that the 2018 steering and chassis does come off as a little muted (no doubt due to improved NVH), but as I push the car and learn the differences, I still find the 6 to be eager and precise. Much of this (as other reviews have pointed out) also relates to the Falken rubber the 6 comes with from the factory. I swapped out to Yoko Advan Sport A/S tires (same as what I had on my 2016 iGT) and everything from mechanical grip (i.e.resistance to wheelspin) to handling "tauntness" has improved measurably. LIke my 2016iGT, I fully expect the 6 to get better as the miles pile on. Again, these observations are after test driving Accord and Camry as well as higher-priced sedans- some for extended drives, others over multiple test drive sessions.. As you say for 36K it's hard to argue with the value of the 6. The Camry ticks in at around 40K and doesn't even have the same level of options. And the Accord, while a handsome design from the rear 3/4's and side, literally falls on it's face with that grille, while it's interior is aping the design and overall quality of my 2016 6 interior. IMO.

    Thank you for this! I couldn’t agree more. To many people get caught up in 0-60 times and for the day to day that barely is anything of significance. No one is redlining their car every where day to day. I digress. Quality wise, build wise I never thought anything was as solid or as upscale feeling as the 6. I LOVE the 18 but this past April I lucked out and got one of the 2017 Mazda6 GT Premium (full option top trim in Canada). There were a couple things I preferred in the older year which he touches on. It felt a little more sporty and I actually prefer the interior and exterior looks more. Power is more than adequate and I never understood why it was a constant issue in reviews. The new turbo is amazing and yes more responsive on the low end. I love the de icers for the windshield and ventilated seats. The new HUD is better but I couldn’t validate those few things for an extra almost $50 in payments. I did a side by side driving event with the 6 and the new accord. I just think the accord is ugly all around from the front grille to the lobster claw brake lights. The interior can’t even come close. It felt a bit quicker but it was very on or off which could be jarring. Especially with the brakes. I can’t comment on the Camry unfortunately. I wish I had time to carry on about this but I can’t figure out why the 6 gets over looked so often. It’s such a beautiful and great performing car and has been the first car I truly loved and have zero regrets with buying.

  • @Vicobop
    @Vicobop6 жыл бұрын

    I do have to respectfully disagree on your remarks on the steering vs the Accord. I test drove this and daily drive the Accord 2.0 Touring, and find myself most wanting that directness the 6 Signature gives. I just miss it. There is just a better linear build up of effort that also translates to a feeling of moving with the car. My Accord'd steering is in comparison very synthetic and has little on center feel. Sport mode makes the steering heavier but it only serves to make it more obvious that it's not sharp and linear because the effort doesn't translate into that telepathic connection you get with Mazdas more commonly. But the Accord gives up very little elsewhere. As you noticed, the powertrain is lively. It is more visceral being a Type-R family engine and having so many gears to cycle through. Biggest issue I've read and heard from everywhere that might be behind the reduced driver engagement on the 6 Signature is the tires chosen. They are SUV comfort tires that are nowhere near the level of grip and steering shoes you'd want to put on it. As a result it's a softer ride and mostly the most quiet sedan in its class. Did you drive it at night? Notice the ambient lights around the interior? It's also something I wish I had with the Accord!

  • @ocramidajzj

    @ocramidajzj

    6 жыл бұрын

    Totally agree with you. The Accord steering may feel "quicker", but the 6 but the way the 6 gradually builds steering resistance and weighting is much more natural and less caffeinated. Also feels more direct and less "videogamey" compared to the Camry and Accord. The only car I test drove that appeared to feel natural but still "quick" was the Alfa Romeo Guilia. The way the Alfa changed direction and conveyed road feel was quite intoxicating. But at 20K more than the 6 not worth the extra cash given the 6 wasn't that far off in speed and just as good IMO with weight and directness. For the money Mazda still blows away all affordable products when it comes to chassis and electronic steering tuning. Evene the Kia Stinger's steering felt artificial after about 8 test drives and sampling it's various steering settings.

    I love how I know who you are by your name and I feel like I've now talked to you across so many different forums and media channels! :D I actually did not feel the Accord steering is quicker. I felt both responded similarly if I tugged one way or the other. MAYBE a slight advantage to the Accord. It's actually heavier too. Though to be quite frank I love the steering wheel's heaviness and physical heft more than the 6, but that's an aesthetic preference, the feeling to the touch. It doesn't affect the actual responsiveness, which is too filtered. I envy your experience with the Alfa. Since you completely understand what I am referring to with steering responsiveness with the 6, I know then that it would feel very nice on that car. You are right however that price wise there is no justifying 20K more unless you were already wanting to spend on a luxury sports sedan and were content with the reliability issues to come with the Alfa. I could be myself someday, but I can't afford it now and it's fairly impractical as a sedan, with some missing features. I would have loved to compare the Stinger GT with a 6 back to back. I remember liking how quick that car's steering felt, but it was one single test drive with no other cars to test against. The 6 and the Accord were driven an hour apart back to back so I had a really good frame of reference to decide who had the better steering feel.

The 2017, was about 3350lbs in Grand Touring trim. I think they relocated the electric motor in the steering to the rack as well, which may have affected steering feel to a certain extent.

    I’m still not happy with the gear ratios on Mazda’s 6 speed auto. 1-2 is a bit wide but not too bad, 2-3 is super close for no reason, 3-4 could be closer, 4-5 could be closer, 5-6 is way too close. It seems like as you’re driving, whenever you need close gear changes, only wide ones are available, and whenever you can make due with wider gear changes, you have close ones, which isn’t ideal. For example, 1-2 is too wide so 1st gear runs too long to avoid reaching dead rpm ranges in 2nd. I guess its nice to have a close spacing between 2nd and 3rd, but that gear change has the most tolerance to be a wide spacing. 3-4 is perfectly reasonable. Could be a bit closer, but honestly not bad. Then 4-5 is a bit too wide. Usually this is the gear range where you spend a lot of time cruising at city speeds, so a wide gap means 5th gear is too tall, so you’re revving too much in 4th to avoid being dead on 5th. If that spacing was closer, you’re more likely to have and ideal cruising rpm. at city speeds. Then 5-6 is way too close. 6th gear is the last gear, so it needs to be well differentiated from the the rest of the gears as a high speed cruising, fuel economy oriented ratio, not an opportunity to max out acceleration. It’s one thing to intend for a car to go top speed in top gear at max rpm, in which case, having closely spaced top gears is advantageous for acceleration, but when a car goes top speed in 5th, 6th is only as good as how low it keeps cruising rpm and how well it improves fuel economy. Then there’s the scenario where you’re cruising in 6th, and you start going up a steep hill, and lugging the engine isn’t really a good idea, so you need a downshift. Well, when 5 and 6 are super close, the revs don’t change that much, so it doesn’t do you that much good. Yes, even a 16% increase in torque multiplication helps, but not as much as, say, a 30% increase. Then, assuming 5th doesn’t give you enough reduction, remember 4-5 is super wide so should you need 4th gear, now suddenly you’re revving too much. I just don’t think Mazda thought the gear ratios through ... and what’s sad is that the toyota yaris ia/ mazda2 has perfectly good ratios all around, and it’s the exact same fundamental design as the rest of Mazda’s skyactive 6 speed autos.

I'm extremely disappointed. To each it's own I guess but it is still very clear that the Mazda 6 is superior in damn near EVERYTHING. I grew up loving Toyotas btw, and the Camry is certainly better than it's predecessors. it drives a lot better and feels more engaging, but compared to a Mazda?? there's legit no comparison. no other car can put a smile on my face when I'm driving other than a Mazda. no other car in it's class I should say. The responsiveness and the Corning ability of this car and how it feels like you're hugging the road is UN MATCHED. please drive this car again and drive it like you stole it this time.

    elusivellama it’s not at all. Handling can’t touch the 6. Build quality can’t touch the 6, especially the interior. I can’t figure out why Honda put that useless cubby in the front with the flip up door. Just leave it off and they could have utilized that space better. It has a very tacked on looking screen that points up to the sky asking to be washed out. Suspension is floaty, handling isn’t as weighted or precise. Fake wood. But hey it has a larger back seat area and is a tad quicker which everyone seems to use that for making it qualify as the best mid size car despite it being one of the ugliest things on the road. I say all this having being lucky and getting to do a 2 hour mix of city back road and highway driving jumping between a top trim accord and 6. Numerous people even noted the accords hood flappy a bit in the wind. Is the accord the worst car ever, hell no, it’s good but certainly not better than a 6 for anyone that’s done a proper comparison or research.

You aren't a car performance person, so use common sense before you talk... if history was the case then why keep bumping the horsepower? The original Miata debuted as a 1990 model, with a 1.6-liter I4 engine underhood that produced a wee 116 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque. Power went to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, and you really had to wind the car out in each gear to truly make the most of that power. So tell me now why isn't it STILL a "WEE" 116 hp engine? I mean to prove your point it wouldn't make sense to increase hp to an already "perfect" application...
