How Does the 2018 Mazda 6 Compare to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Edmunds Road Test Engineer Calvin Kim had the opportunity to test-drive the new 2018 Mazda 6. Join him as he samples how it drives on the road and track, and keep watching to find out what makes this new Mazda 6 different from its competitors in the midsize sedan segment.
Q: What engines are available in the 2018 Mazda 6?
A: The Sport and Touring versions are powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models are powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine that produces 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. All trims but Sport come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Sport comes with a six-speed manual, and the automatic is an option.
Q: How much does the 2018 Mazda 6 cost?
A: The Mazda 6 comes in five trim levels. The Sport model with a manual transmission starts at $22,845, while the top trim Signature starts at $35,645. In between are the Touring, which starts at $26,595, the Grand Touring at $30,095, and the Grand Touring Reserve at $32,595. All prices include a destination charge of $895.
Q: How fast is the 2018 Mazda 6?
A: Equipped with the turbocharged engine, our Signature model did 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and completed the quarter-mile pass, an automotive standard measure of overall acceleration, in 14.9 seconds at a speed of 94.8 mph. These results put it squarely between the 2.0-liter turbocharged Honda Accord and the V6 Toyota Camry on one end and the base-engine 1.5-liter turbocharged Honda Accord and the 2.5-liter inline-four Toyota Camry on the other.
Q: What are the 2018 Mazda 6's main competitors?
A: The 6 sits in the large and competitive midsize segment. Chief players here are the Chevrolet Malibu, the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Sonata, the Kia Optima, the Nissan Altima and the Toyota Camry. Also in this class are the Ford Fusion, the Subaru Legacy and the Volkswagen Passat.

I test drove Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys before I made my purchase, and ended up buying the Mazda6 Signature. It was much less costly than either of the other cars, and completely destroyed them on amenities. The Mazda6 Signature is very comfortable, quiet, and a lot of fun to drive.

My wife bought a CX 5 last year and I love driving that car any chance I get. I got an opportunity to take a short test dive of the new 6. The suspension soaks up the road bumps like butter but still has a sporty feel. Off the line the 6 may not be the fastest but at speed lets say going 30mph and you need to speed up to 50 it was faster than the New Camry I tested. Plenty of speed and agility to get around traffic and let have fun at the same time. The competition is really tight in this segment. I don’t think you can make a bad choice between the this car and the other big 2 competitors. I will say you won’t regret buying the Mazda. I still have a Mazda CX-9 with 165000 miles on it and have not had a single problem with it. That was my first experience with Mazda so I would say they are solid reliable car if you keep up with the maintenance.

The car uses a keyless fob. In other words, it is basically a module that uses some sort of radio signal to interact with the car completely wirelessly. To start the car, you hold the brake pedal and press the button. To use accessories or turn the car on without starting the engine, you simply press the button.

I have to agree. I own a 2018 Accord Touring 2.0T it drives very well. The Mazda exceeds with its interiors and drive. The Accord can match or beat the Mazda 6 in acceleration and the infotainment in the Accord is superior. Overall the exterior of the Mazda 6 is much cleaner, more seductive, with beautiful lines. Each car is nice in its own right however when my lease is up I'm seriously looking at the turbocharged CX-5. I drove on the other day and the interiors made my Accord look a bit cheap.

It seems that Mazda 'bucks the trends' in so many areas. The culmination of the current 6 is just that- all of the little things that they've done over the generations: Skyactiv, G-vectoring, the improved turn in feel by reducing torque going into the turn along with the conservative, yet beautiful interior appointments. I think we can all agree that the Mazda version is more luxurious than the Camry and Accord, have the road better, are more 'driver focused' than either. Surprisingly great car- almost not considered. A mistake by shoppers not to have a Mazda on the short list!

I have test driven all 3. Mazda 6 is on a whole next level in refinement, quietness, interior materials and the 2.5Turbo has a wave of torque, just pulls so well. The Accord 2.0T and 10 speed is excellent and faster than the Mazda and get it if you want a manual, but interior is not as premium as the Mazda. AWD will help with both the Accord and Mazda sell well in the snow belt and Canada. Get the Camry if you you are skeptical about turbo reliability and need a V6 but is is a distant 3rd in my opinion.

That's an excellent review that I fully echo. Test drove the 6 GT (and sat in the Signature drooling) and the Accord 2.0 Touring and had the same thoughts. The 6 is refined and the most silent while having a really neat turbo system, engine noise and incredible Mazda steering feel. I decided to go with the Accord after a very difficult few days of deliberation because I've had two Mazdas and the infotainment hasn't changed since my current 3 GT and felt like having a gadget change in my life. The Accord wowed me by its speed and overall performance so I felt it was an acceptable compromise. I still have buyer's envy when I see the interior of this 6 though. It's not just drop dead gorgeous but it's legitimately well built and crafted. The only caveat I found was the Sen wood felt a bit plasticky in spite of being real. Overall the 6 and Accord are fantastic vehicles.

Nabil M definitely look into a 2-3 year old low milage example, especially a touring (preferably w. the tech package (bose & a moonroof!) or GT; should be very easy to find around $17-18k (save up awhile for the downpayment if $$ is a big obstacle & watch the depreciation work in your favor in the meantime!). Also a 2-3 y/o Mazda 3 GT or hatch is probably the best value out there; plenty of those around $15k... IF you get to the particular dealer ASAP (they go quickly, I've noticed)...

As a 2015 Mazda 6 Touring owner, I feel these small changes are really compelling and I can certainly see how they improve daily comfort and driving. And now knowing that a turbo is offered, I'd love to check back on used Signature models a few years from now. P.S. I already find the 2.5 base motor engaging, and I love the auto transmission. It's comfortable and fuel efficient! P.S.S. I also drive a manual '16 Mazda 3 and a '90 5-speed Miata

Hey, I also have a 2015 6 Touring and I was curious are your rims peeling? I have those silver ish gunmetal 19" rims and they're peeling really badly exposing the black steel underneath them. Apparently it's a common problem but I'm not sure if Mazda still repairs it like they used to.

I think this version of the 6 is a winner. It seems a solid mid-level sports sedan with a lot of sporting attributes that someone seeking a "drovers' car" could easily live with. On my wish list for the next 6 version would be a quicker steering rack, and a special edition RWD version or an AWD version which defaulted to largely RWD bias until AWD was needed. Very good review, btw. Thank you

My 2017 Mazda 6 is a great car same color as this one. Yeah I don’t have the turbo but the N/A 2.5 L still puts out 185 horsepower. Which still spins the tires at launch. Handling is really good. And if I want more power I can always drive my 2016 Mazda CX-9 with the 2.5 L turbo which has a lot of torque.

@@Jennifer-nj8gn I like a V6 too. But I drive 3000 km a month so it's time to lose a couple cylinders and save some gas. Got more important things in life to pay for these days! I worked for Toyota for years and left right after the current Camry came out. The one thing I wish Toyota did was offer AWD in their V6 Camry and Avalon. Maybe I'm too heavy on the skinny pedal, but all I could get it to do was spin. But I agree the power is nice.

Mazda 6 has always been my favorite midsize car. Only downside to it is that you are unable to get a manual transmission on the GT trim. The Accord attracts those buyers looking for a sporty and luxurious model (Accord Sport) with a 6-speed manual transmission. Otherwise, I think the Mazda6 is the most beautiful midsize car on the market and this design has aged very well. I see 2014’s on the road and still think they are gorgeous.

Excellent review. I am more interested in the base model because of two important things to me. Normally aspirated motor and manual transmission. What may keep me from buying one is that you can't get any options added if you buy the base model. Why would Mazda not allow you to add the specific options one might want?

Coming from a Camry and as a lifetime Toyota loyalist, when my 2013 Camry suffered a known issue with the torque converter just out of warranty, I explored other options. I drove the Accord, the Camry, a couple Chevy's and the Mazda 3. When I got to the Mazda 6, I knew it fit like a glove. The only thing I do not like about it is the charging connection is inside and to the very back of the arm rest. So you have this wire pulled all the way past the gear shifter into the phone pocket just to charge your phone. I do love Android Auto on it, though get a good cable because not just your average USB-C cable will work (Communication Error #7 means get a new cable - free tip that took me a few days of Googling to find). Great review, I came across it after I bought my car - I am really looking for why it gets such low scores on "Dependability" by Edmunds and consumer reports. 2.5 out of 5 seems harsh for a basically re-designed car - where is the data coming from for that? What is your opinion of is Dependability? Thanks!

I've been Mazda loyal for 30 years and still love them. I currently own a 2017 Mazda 6 Premium. Two issues for us is #1 the location of 12 volt and USB outlets hidden in the console box. I'd rather use the console box for storage and have the plug ins forward for ease of connecting the cables/cords and for the rear occupants have the plug ins on the rear of the console under the vents. Get the plug ins and rear seat heater switches out of the folding armrest. We can't always access the armrest because of cargo or a child is sitting in the middle or that part of the seat is folded down. #2 I'd also like to see the touch screen always enabled. It would be less distracting and quicker to use. The HMI commander set up is not overly user friendly especially for a passenger who isn't familiar with the system. Mazda's are the best for driving feel compared to their competitors.

It says a ton that the overall exterior profile and style hasn't really changed a whole lot since it debuted for 2014, yet it still beats the pants off the latest redesigns of the Camry and Accord (although in fairness, they do look much better than they used to)... Mazda's designers view car design as an art form, and it shows. The quality of their interiors just keeps getting better and really sets them apart from the rest in the mainstream sedan price-range... I had a 2014 6 Touring and the 2016 Grand touring, and both drove as great (in fact, better in many ways) with 20,000+ miles on them and no problems whatsoever... Last year I traded up to a 2017 CX 5 Grand Touring with AWD, and my God, what a sweet-driving and handling little 'bug' of a CUV it is! It corners like it's on rails and has the tighter turning circle than my fiance's 2015 Honda Civic... and in the Soul Red Crystal with that mean grill and those narrow headlights, looks better than any SUV ought to.. and to think I never thought much of SUVs!!!. Mazda is a truly amazing little company that produces outstanding products across the entire spectrum... wish I could afford one of each lol...

I appreciated your comment on the transmission being a 6-speed rather than 8, 9 or 10, and how that pairs with the torque characteristics of the engine. I'm not a fan of driving a car that can't make up its mind on what gear to be in. Further, even though I like speed, I don't drag race my cars anymore. What I liked about my Regal turbo was the mid-range power without histrionics. Calvin, was that the case with this Mazda?

I own a this car. Power is plentiful throughout the gearing and I love driving it. It could use an extra gear or two in the upper range as you hit 6th at around 45mph. So driving 80 on the interstate you're at around 2900rpm. You still get great mileage, 33+ for me, but makes you wonder what it could be. Wouldn't stop me from buying it again.
