2017 Buick Lacrosse - Redline: First Drive

A classy new design, substantial weight loss, and upscale cabin materials make for a very strong first impression for buyers looking for an upscale large luxury sedan. The 2017 Buick Lacrosse may be worth a look if you're in the market for a spacious cruiser with plenty of room and available AWD.

I purchased a fully loaded 2017 Lacrosse with the premium trim level and couldn't be happier. I absolutely love the way it rides and handles, especially with the sport setting on. It has so many options I'm having a blast learning them all. It is by far the quietest, best riding, and best driving car I have ever owned. It handles like a dream on any road I’ve throw at it, has plenty of power, gets excellent gas mileage and is super comfortable for long trips. And I think it is the most stylish car on the market, not gaudy but sophisticated in its looks and styling. I tested a number of competitive models from Lexus, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Acura, BMW and Lincoln and they just didn't compare to this car on features for the price and in many other ways. Anyone wanting a luxurious, quiet, great handling car, with plenty of power may want to take a look at the Lacrosse!

@@bluwng I loved the lgx 3.6 engine even more than the old 3.8’s, even though they were great too. The lgx is far more fuel efficient since it can run on 4 cylinders when power demands are low. I regularly got 32 or 33 mpg on the highway, and that was going a bit above the speed limit. It is so smooth running but has plenty of power. Mine stock with the 9 speed consistently ran the quarter miles in high 13 seconds, with a best of 13.8. has so much power too. Never burned a drop of oil. I can imagine lgx’s running 200 to 300k miles and more with zero issues. It is one great engine for sure.

I think these newer Buick LaCrosses (2017 and newer) are very underrated. I don't understand why they get so much grief. They're beautiful cars and they're virtually luxury cars.

Nice Video! The LaCrosse doesn't look that bad. It definitely looks better over its predecessor. It just has more of a flowing design that just gives it more of a cohesive and we'll proportioned design. Buick definitely deserves more recognition. They are producing fairly good vehicles and shouldn't be related to your grandfather. Keep up the great work, Sofyan! -DriveAndBeDriven

These are my favorite reviews online. They are very fair, stating both the good and the bad. The references to past vehicles, and comparisons, make it very informative.

K.C.'s RC All lies. The 2000 DeVille, Seville, and 2002 Escalade all used real Zebrano wood trim and premium leather. And the Northstar Devilles/DTS, specifically 2004-2011, were very reliable cars because GM had worked out the kinks of the 90s Northstar.

The Lacrosse feels more 'traditional' luxury vs. the CTS which feels more 'avantgarde/cutting-edge' luxury. Let's put it this way, my grandmother would NEVER be able to figure out how to tune the radio on the CUE system, but in the Lacrosse with the larger central display and actual preset buttons, I could set all the stations and she would probably be able to figure it out in a week's time. I think Buick might find some customers with this car if the price is underneath the Lexus ES350 and Lincoln MKZ. I like the design language Buick has been taking on, and my parents even moreso. (Might I add we're Chinese, so that might be a slight bias)

Just so you know, this is not based on the Impala. The 2017 Lacrosse rides on GM's P2XX platform (the first GM car to do so) which is a longer and wider version of the E2XX which the 16-17 Malibu uses. The Impala, even the 2017 model, rides on the older Epsilon II platform.

I think Soften gives the best amount of information in the shortest amount of time which is convenient and helps hold my interest. Another thing is, um an avid test driver as well as owned a few cars that have been reviewed. Your reviews are always spot on to my driving experience with the same vehicles. I also like you can show some favoritism without showing FANBOY. You're always honest and fair, You can have a favorite car without having to make excuses for it like one particular Popular, KZread reviewer. I'm looking forward to your review of the FIAT 124 Spyder with a direct comparison to your Miata. I think that's going to be VERY INTERESTING!!!

Slow on the uptake again, Redline. There's nothing surprising about Buick being luxurious. They're not struggling to gain a niche in the U.S. anymore. Their sales are through the roof. This model looks nothing like the previous generation. Quickness is not surprising--this is a brand that built some of the world's most historic muscle cars. Your review is the only one that denigrates any aspect of this car or this brand. Just stop reviewing Buick's, please, and take the word "premium" out of your vocabulary--you're overusing it.

Not sure why he said (more than once) this is based on the new Impala? the current generation Impala is actually built on the Epsilon platform, which the previous generation La Crosse was built on, as was the Cadillac XTS. The previous La Crosse was actually built on the Epsilon platform before the current Impala. it was redesigned in 2009 or 2010. the Impala followed that platform in 2014, when it was redesigned. the "All New La Crosse", which he is in, is actually NOT built on the same platform as the current Impala. the Impala is expecting a redesign in 2018 or perhaps 2019, and it will most likely be to this new platform. I'm pretty sure that the only other car that currently shares the LA Crosse platform is the new Cadillac CT6. Just want people to be clear on this as he is very incorrect.

Pretty sure the older (Pre 2017) Lacrosse is on the same Epsilon II Platform as the Impala. The E2XX is the newer chassis, used in this, the future 2018 Regal, and 2016+ Malibu.

Yeah probably a little bit. It's direct competitor is the ES 350. And I'm sure GM would love if the LaCrosse took sales away from the continental too. But GM's Continental competitors are the CT6 and XTS.

Nice review. However, there is an awful lot of road noise which may be attributed to the sensitivity of the audio or even the type of road surface or possibly the 20" wheels vice the standard 18". I thought most recent Buicks were supposed to be 'Lexus' quiet. Also when accelerating briskly the engine noise seems rather harsh and intrusive as well. The exterior is smartly styled although (as you noted) the rear end treatment is rather bland considering the rest of the styling.

Lol, "that's a Buick?" so I'm not the only one who wonders what Buick's marketing people are thinking. "This is not a boring crappy car!" That said, this is a pretty car. Smooth and sleek. Not sure if it reaches different buyers than the old LaCrosse though. Sounds like more road noise than I expected?

Beautiful interior as far as the center console, dash, etc. It would be nice to see the Buick Regal GS get an interior console/dash like this. The steering wheel is ugly and so are the lines in the seats. I personally like when seat cushions are divided into three sections

Think Buick is still trying hard to find its place in the GM line up most of its cars seem to be a mix of rebadged Gm euro brand imports (Opels ect. )& U.S. built platforms. Your comment not your grandfathers Buick reminds me of the old Oldsmobile Ad "not your fathers Oldsmobile" from when GM was trying to make that Brand be youthful. Good or bad on the infotainment system it's nice to see a volume knob and buttons, touch screen is nice but distracting to use for certain things.
