2017 Buick LaCrosse | CarGurus Test Drive Review

Within General Motors’ hierarchy, the Buick brand has always served as a bridge between less-expensive Chevrolets and more-expensive Cadillacs. Buick has built youthful cars, performance cars, and world-class cars. The image that sticks, however, is based on the chrome-encrusted barges Buick peddled for decades to older and wealthier people who did not or would not buy a Caddy. Times are changing, though, and the redesigned 2017 Buick LaCrosse is a perfect example illustrating the company’s metamorphosis. This is a genuinely impressive car: attractive to behold, comfortable to cruise in, and unexpectedly rewarding to drive.
Buick builds the new LaCrosse on a stretched version of the Chevrolet Malibu platform, and the car loses several hundred pounds while gaining a far more robust architecture. That weight loss and those structural improvements, combined with a satisfying 3.6-liter V6 engine and a decisive 8-speed automatic transmission, go a long way toward making the LaCrosse an enjoyable car to drive. The 3.6-liter V6 is the same direct-injected motor GM uses in several of its products, tuned to deliver 310 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 282 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The 8-speed automatic transmission feeds the power to the LaCrosse’s front wheels, unless you spend an extra $2,200 to obtain the available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. According to the EPA, my front-wheel-drive (FWD) test car should have gotten 25 mpg in combined driving, but it averaged 23.2 on my evaluation loop.

I purchased a fully loaded 2017 Lacrosse with the premium trim level and couldn't be happier. I absolutely love the way it rides and handles, especially with the sport setting on. It has so many options I'm having a blast learning them all. It is by far the quietest, best riding, and best driving car I have ever owned. It handles like a dream on any road I’ve throw at it, has plenty of power, gets excellent gas mileage and is super comfortable on long trips. And I think it is the most stylish car on the market, not gaudy but sophisticated in its looks and styling. I tested a number of competitive models from Lexus, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Acura, BMW and Lincoln and they just didn't compare to this car on features for the price and in many other ways. Anyone wanting a luxurious, quiet, great handling car, with plenty of power may want to take a look at the Lacrosse!

I purchased a used 2015 Lacrosse "Leather" a couple of years ago. I'm very happy with it so far. I'm tall, so the extra head room is greatly appreciated. I have 2 minor issues...1. My transmission sometimes feels like it's "searching" for the correct gear to be in while going up shallow inclines. 2. The braking is sometimes "herky-jerky" as the transmission downshifts to a lower gear. Other than that, I think the car is great.

This has no problems besting the Lexus ES and does so for the last decade in many comparisons.

Purchased a 2019 Lacrosse Avenir with the dynamic driver package (20 inch wheels, etc.) Test drove european, asian and two other domestics prior to purchase. The Buick is up there with any of them and I couldnt be happier with my choice. For comparison, I traded a 2016 MB C300 for the Avenir and I'm happier with the Buick. Its an overall better driving experience.

WOW, went from a Benz to Buick!!! Can you say with a little more detail what is better with the LaCrosse over your C300? Thanks.

@@wannabedal-adx458 Sure. Its not that much of a difference between the two of them from driving dynamics to be honest. What is different is the way they approach the driving experience. With the Avenir, you get a nearly identical technology package to the C300 at a lower price point, with a few touches that were not on my MB. The parking assist feature is amongst the best out there as is the other driver assist features such as lane departure and variable cruise. Also, while the interior styling is different, the overall comfort seems better in the Avenir but admittedly, that is completely subjective. The Avenir is a bit more relaxed in its driving dynamics, even in Sport mode, which makes for a road car that is very suitable and excels in long distance driving. Its firm but not jarring, even on 20 inch wheels, and very responsive to driver inputs. The Avenir also has more power and the 3.6 VVT and 9 speed auto is smooth in its delivery. I get compliments often when driving the Avenir from people of all ages and demographics. Its funny because my wife likes imports, specifically german and high end asian vehicles, but the Buick gets more attention than my MB did.

amazing for the money you're getting something that beats out all of the Acura line up in terms of Luxury features and interior material quality and it matches the Lincoln continental in terms of luxury, ride, features, and build quality at a much cheaper price. well done Buick

I'm glad how he was really honest about the car's road noise. That makes me question what Buick's quiet tuning technology actually does? 🤔 Would a Lexus ES be quieter with road noise?

I've watched many video reviews of this Lacrosse, because I'm about to buy one to replace my 2013, and this is the first time I've heard anyone say the interior was loud.

I love my 2017 Lacrosse with the dynamic drive package (20 inch wheels, HiPer strut suspension and sports mode. Great on the highway or twisty roads. Standard mode great for the city.

Interesting. Which size/model tires do you recommend instead? In the market for a 2017 or greater Buick LaCrosse.

Good looking car. Several issues though: sweeping center stack with storage underneath isn't truly functional (reference the Chrysler 200); overall interior equipment maybe laid out in a great way, but comparing material quality and look, this isn't luxurious; exterior styling, especially the taillights, seem unfinished; lack of features as mentioned in the video don't help this car stand out. All and all asking for $48,000+ for a Buick isn't a crime, it's just not the best option.
