2016 Harley Davidson Night Rod first ride review

2016 Harley Davidson Night Rod first ride review
So I wanted to try something different and the 2016 Harley Davidson Model seemed the obvious choice. This bike is a bruiser and definitely surprised me not only with the power produced from the 1250 cc engine but also the handling ability of the bike! I managed to get the back end out, the front wheel hovering from the floor remember it weighs 290+ kg.

I rode for HD at their Talladega Test Facility from 97 to 02 and rode the entire development cycle for the VRod. After we worked out some early cycle kinks and could get some performance out of them, they became my favorites. Probably 50k miles of development riding the P4, which was the project name for the vrod, taught me how to use that power effectively. It has the most unique steering feel of any bike I've ridden and I've ridden examples of most categories. Never bought one, I hope to, but i can attest that they are grin inducing machines with accessible, not maniacal (KTM 1290 SuperDuke) power. Good review!!!

I just bought a 2013, this bike pulls hard up to 125mph, but past that the aerodynamics get shaky on the front wheel. Very fun, super tight bike. All the other HD models handle like a John Deere tractor from 1938.

I felt the same way when I first rode a 2012 Night Rod. I hit 90mph in first gear jumping on the highway and was impressed! I ended up with a 2016 V-Rod Muscle because I liked the look of the dual exhaust on both sides. It actually turns pretty good and I only noticed a struggle during slow, full locked handle bar parking lot maneuvers. Dump the clutch coming out of turns and at green lights that rear wheel will break! Fun! Great review!

I just got the 2003 100th av and out of all the bikes I have owned, not only is this my favorite but I get more looks from people then any other Motorcycle I have owned since 1972. Just went to an all Motorcycle meeting in Stockbridge M with over 600 bikes and every time I looked were I parked my bike there were 3 to 6 people standing around my bike talking about it. I never had that with any other Motorcycles I have owned.

The frame was not designed by Porsche, and the engine was a collaboration-project based on Harleys VR1000 race engine as base. The Revolution-engine is a marvel, the only motorcycle-engine that has passed Porsches Düsseldorf-test.

Are the pegs as far forward as the vrod muscle? I find those just a little too stretched out for me. Most riders I see on the muscle look a little uncomfortable, or like they will be shortly, in that clamshell position. the style is great though. I had a 2005 Vrod streetrod with mid controls, didn't like it all that much with the mids. Had a victory hammer that was more forward but was the most uncomfortable seat ever created. After 1 hour in the saddle I was numb. Hopefully these are better.

I ride a CB1000r, and I always loathed HD... until I test drove a 2013 Nightrod and bought one. All the HD engineered engines vibrate and underperform.... the Porsche designed Vrod is best bike for HD to win over crossover buyers like me.... and so they discontinued it. Dummies. VERY FUN to ride the HD and Honda back to back. VERY different, both are fun, both are fast.

I meant l like nightrod far more than the muscle. And like most Harleys has huge aftermarket support and performance options and lends itself well to customizing. Plus lm from Kc where plant was they made vrod and Sportster and built that plant. same as plant recently closed. And l was back when plant was open and they were developing the VROD. vrod is as much Harley as it is Kansas City and l cant say enough good things about bike plant and kC carpenters Union and Porsche inspired and developed. vrod

Ive really come to like the Rod series of bikes, now I understand a lot more what they are going for. However, for me, I don't think I could have one as my daily, Id need to put too much luggage on it and that would spoil its looks. However as a weekender, perfect, but it's a lot of money for something I wouldn't ride every day. 8)

Hmmm. To really appreciate and maximize the features of the Nightrod, you MAY want to consider a 1200 Sportster as a first bike. I started there, and it made me a hell of a rider. After years owning that, I stepped up to the VRod, and can really wring it out to its potential. The Sportster, BTW, is NOT a slow bike, and it handles very well.

Not so much a beginner bike. There are handling challenges to riding a "relatively" heavy machine with a 34" rake, and a 240 rear tire, not to mention the acceleration factor. I say all this as a Nightrod owner and experienced rider. HOWEVER, if you're up to the challenge, and take it easy learning to ride WELL in traffic, go for it.

What is the riding position like? Could you ride it all day?

  • @markjulius2006

    @markjulius2006

    7 жыл бұрын

daibish86 I bought a new 2016 Night Rod 1 1/2 months ago and almost have 4,000 miles on it. This bike needs improvements. To ride all day, you'll definitely need a windshield and you'll have to change out the front pegs. This bike offers no wind protection at all and you'll be fighting the wind everywhere you go and you'll have to grip the handle bar that much tighter. If you like speed on the freeway, you'll love this bike. The footpegs are a horrible design. You can never actually "rest" your feet on them. When riding, you'll have to literally press the bottoms of your feet against them. After awhile a particular spot on your feet starts to get irritated or sore and you'll be constantly moving your feet around to a more comfortable spot. It's extremely annoying. Harley sells a kit to have the foot pegs moved more towards the middle of the bike. I'm going to buy that kit in a few weeks. I believe that would be a better position to have my feet. For those wanting comfort for your feet without having to buy the kit, there are aftermarket foot rests you can buy that are superior to the stock ones. The seat is comfortable, but on a hot day, you can sweat a lot. The longest ride I've been on so far was 3 1/2 hours and it wasn't too bad. If you're like me and wear a backpack, make sure it's not too heavy, or your butt might be a bit sore after a long ride. Having more weight pressing on the seat doesn't help. Hope this info helps!

Looking back i still wish i had pulled the trigger on this 2014 Used-New promo bike my dealer had. Night rod with Muscle Car Blue and silver stripe unf i still have wet dreams of that gorgeous beauty but ultimately i stayed my hand on it, because the stock exhaust is just SUCH a let-down on these, plus that WIDE tire means you really have to be deliberate and somewhat forceful learning it over in the turns; after my demo ride in fact my thighs were hurting because i really felt like i had to squeeze her hard to get her to move like i wanted. Maybe one day luck and fate will cross my path again when i got a healthy chunk of change and I can be re-united with that sexy blue beast i let go.

There's quite a bit to like about the V-Rod (122bhp, inverted fork, minimal vibration, etc.), but I just can't get pass the exhaust note. If it was a Honda - I'd say that it has a wonderful sound, but for a Harley - not so much. I like it, but would still go with a Dyna for overall experience and cost. How about you?

The sound reminds me of a sports bike which I felt suited this better rather than a Harley thunderous sound. The bikes great for what it is but personally like you Dario I prefer the Dyna overall

I had and miss my 2015 nightrod. It had slipons that mimicked HD sound brands famous for, bike was otherwise stock. Reclines at 9000 and l like the forward controls. IMO best Harley made

Sadly, Harley-Davidson is employing idiocy tactics in having discontinued the V-Rod. A bike that is clearly the future and would have been an enormous platform forward for Harley-Davidson. Instead, they're producing inferior technology and trying to pawn it off as something new and different. The V-Rod engine and transmission is second-to-none and quite frankly the best that Harley-Davidson has ever produced. It is Bulletproof, compared to the air cooled V-Twin garbage Motors that they're producing today.
