I remember seeing this live and thinking “ oh another Kyle Larson-esc wreck” but when they panned to the car, I started shaking uncontrollably. My heart sunk and even though I don’t like Dillon much, I prayed nonstop until they started putting their thumbs up and signaling he was okay. Up until Newman’s wreck this past year, this was hands down the worst wreck I’ve ever seen.
I legit started crying when I watched this live, I thought he was dead. And the fact that it was in the 3 at Daytona just added to the emotion. Plus Jr’s reaction... crazy emotional

Jr applauding his crew when he got out on victory lane was just such an indicator of who that dude is. He appreciated his crew for going to check on Austin and Brad, right after they had just won the race. Their focus, like his, was on the drivers in the wreck. Dale would be so proud of him.

28 years prior that nearly did end the sport; if Bobby Allison had hit the catch fence at just the wrong angle, there would have been a Le Mans 1955-scale disaster.
Anyone else watch Brad wander over from his car on the overhead as Austin is being pulled out? Starts at 02:42, and his body language says a lot as he approaches the car. He said in an interview after the race he thought Austin's chances of walking away went down significantly after the second collision, and based off his body language, I think he was approaching the car expecting to find out Austin was dead. He pops back into frame very briefly at 02:53, there's one of the safety penguins trying to talk to him, and he's just staring at Austin as he walks away.
@cjthomas4102

I couldn't imagine seeing that in front, hitting the 3 and then walking over while everyone is trying to get a look into the car
I’m sorry but every one screaming when they saw Austin’s car sounded like what I thought the pit crew members would of sounded like as they ran out to check on him
Whoever said “Larson’s crash was not worse” is wrong. Injured more fans, a wheel ended up like 30 rows up, his engine was also on the other side of the catch fence and his front completely severed, and the entire car went in as well.
I honestly think Austin hit that fence at just about the only possible angle that lets him and the fans get away without serious injury. If he goes in roof-first, he's dead when the fence cheese-graters the roll cage. If he's more sideways, more debris ends up flying into the stands. If he's around backward, he's slowed down, but the fuel cell comes apart and probably ignites. This is about as well as that could've gone. He hits with the engine, belly first, the impact rips the engine free and sends both it and the survival cell back out into the infield. It's just...I still can't completely understand how he walked away from that.
Let me just say Newman was under Austin for about 0.000001 of a second
People forget about Edwards in 2009 it seems

Well that's because Denny started slowing down because he crossed the line in my opinion he should had kept going until everyone slowed down and the air is what turned him because if u notice he started checking up so it caused the spin 1.
