2015 Carolina Crown Opener Flag Tutorial

Hello!
My name is Paul, I've marched with Carolina Crown in 2014 and 2015 and am hopefully marching my Age-Out in 2016! Some of my friends have asked me to teach them the flag work from this season and I never got around to it but it's here now!
FIRST NOTE: If you're having trouble doing the one-handed 45 tosses, you can just bring in your other hand to get the necessary power or control for the toss :)
NOTE: If the sound of my voice is just too annoying and you feel like you can learn it by watching me do the work with just counts, the end of the video has a runthrough of me doing just that at around 23:40
Want to help me marching Carolina Crown in 2016?!?! I'll be vlogging (video logging) all the camps I go to and during the 2016 season as well! DONATE HERE \/ \/ \/

    +Keiley Rowland HEY. So as I said in the video, it's basically a regular 45 toss except your right hand instead of being over, is underneath the pole. The general movement is like so. Hold your right hand with palm up facing the sky and fingers pointing behind you. Then rapidly rotate your hand to the right side and forward until your fingers are facing forward. It should be a Quick flicking motion. It's like youre throwing up a PIZZA. The hard part is now angle(ing) your hand in a 45, and using the momentum of the UP DOWN before the toss to flick the weight of the flag up and above you. TO MAKE IT EASIER. Do the up down motion before the toss and Bring in your LEFT HAND(at the bottom of the flag or at bottom cheater tape) to help rotate the flag and push it up(and get the 45 angle). It takes practice to understand how to get the momentum to do it with one hand but you can do it. I actually flick it. If you are watching KZread on a desktop, try using the slow motion feature(at the bottom right hand corner in settings) to watch 23:50 in slow motion. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

    Hi Paul! I'm will be a junior in this upcoming season of color guard, but I had a couple questions for you. I come from a small town guard, but we won 5th at state behind Broken Arrow, Union, Bixby, Jenks, and Mustang, so it's not as bad as it sounds. :D I've done middle school winter guard, 2 seasons of color guard, and 1 season of Varisty winter guard my sophomore year. This year is the first opportunity I have to learn weapon, so I already have doubles down after 2 weeks. My flag experience is advanced, but not expert. I have yet to learn to catch behind my back and only know a limited number of one handed tosses, but I know what I know well. Dance incorporated with flag work isn't that big of an issue. So, I was wondering what I would need to do/focus on to be ready to audition for a World-Class guard after senior year. It's best to start early. :) Would it be smart to go to Ball University for Summer Symposium next year? Should I be taking private dance lessons? Marching Crown is my ultimate dream, and I would definitely appreciate the help! Thank you so much! -Edmond Memorial Veteran

    +iluvsparklez2 YES! Sorry for the bad explanation, I was trying to make the video as short as possible. The one handed 45 can be worked up to in this step-by-step easy to understand process. 1)Hold out hands, palms up, place flag in hands, silk on right side(right hand top tape, left hand bottom crutch tip) do a flat toss pushing forward with the right hand and pull back with the left. This is the basis of the 45 2) set hands in the same place, both under, same tapes, instead of starting flat, start with right hand next to your right shoulder, left hand extended above and in front of right shoulder(still at crutch tip), the tip is behind you and your flag is parallel to the end zone. Toss a two handed 45 from here. RIGHT HAND IS STILL UNDER, its just an angled "flat" toss. loosen the right wrist and get used to it. Making sure you release right hand above and in front of you, the left hand behind your head, and passing through flat as you release the toss. 3) HARDEST PART, actually doing the toss, now you have to use momentum to try the original 45 I teach in the video(up, down, out) also pulling on the flag as it comes out of your hand as seen at 5:40. if you cant get it out with one hand, just stick in the left hand on the release to help it out until you understand the one handedness behind the toss. SUPER LONG I KNOW, I try to make it as simple as possible while giving the best explanation. GOOD LUCK, let me know how it goes!!!

    It's one of those "the more you know" type of things! If you know lots and lots of individual moves and tosses, then learning choreography becomes as simple as stringing together the moves you already know. Also, the more different instructors you learn from, the easier it will be to learn from any instructor because you can get used to a wide range of styles.

    Thank you for this video. Is it possible to know the length of the pole and the size of the flag? Thank you. Oh, the pole ... is it in aluminium?

  • @PaulScript

    @PaulScript

    8 жыл бұрын

    +JP Quebec I'm using a standard 6 foot aluminum flag pole. Usually found on any marching band or colorguard website. The flag size I believe is 36inches by 54 inches. For weights, I used a 1inch wide 3 inch long bolt at the top and a 1inch 2inch long bolt at the bottom. The Top bolt has 3 nuts screwed on and the bottom bolt has 2 nuts screwed on. It's not a perfect weight, but its close to the one I used at crown lol

    @@PaulScript How, (if you were) did you manage to be in Carolina Crown and both college with out the two overlapping sometime twords the begging of the season or the end? How did you earn the money for CC? And those were really the only two questions that came to mind.

  • @PaulScript

    @PaulScript

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well, money wise I had a lot of support from my parents and brothers. I had a job to raise money myself for drum corps too while I was in school. For college, the only problems I had were that finals week and thanksgiving overlapped with audition weekends and that was kinda stressful because I usually had a Monday exam after a 3-day audition weekend. I realize that some high schools and college schedules may overlap with the Drum Corps Season but corps understand that school is important. That goes without saying you might miss parts of Spring Training and stuff but I've never experienced my Spring Semester overlapping with Spring Training.
