Today we get to try out another BMW! This time it's a 2015 BMW R Nine T and I am too excited to try this thing out. The looks are super retro and cool and it has BMW's Boxer engine which should be really fun to try out!

I own the scrambler version of this bike. It’s hard to compare this bike to others because it’s not what you expect of a modern motorcycle, almost the opposite. But that’s the beauty of it. Plenty of character, beautiful sounds, and timeless looks. In the 6 months of owning mine, I’ve gotten more compliments on it than all my other vehicles combined in my lifetime. Not saying that I bought it for compliments, but it is a widely appreciated bike with a famously reliable motor.

You’re right. It’s the best damn feeling in the world. Makes you feel like a man riding a real vintage motorcycle, just a pure machine. The way they were made before there were all this new gadgets. And the oil smell that comes out of it when the bike is warmed…. Delicious.

Gotta say I've never heard such negative words about this bike. I'm actually pretty sure I've never seen a review from a KZreadr who didn't love it. It's Great your happy to share your opinion and be honest about how you feel, however going off this it might be safe to say you may just be the furthest thing away from whom this bike is for.

OC. Chase you’re right about a lot of things here. It’s not the most confidence inspiring bike as the stock suspension is a bit more unsprung, gearbox is not the smoothest, power delivery lacks in relation to it’s displacement, torque steer & vibrations, lack of electronics & rider aids…but these sorts of things is what gives you such a visceral riding experience with this unique bike. It humbles you as a rider with it being so analog, & once you understand how to ride it, it rewards you with smiles for days. It makes you feel like a hero carving it up in the mountains & quite frankly has made any other bike I’ve ridden feel like a breeze. It’s def the prettiest (subjective) bike I’ve owned. But still wish BMW would’ve put a fuel indicator on this. Ride safe man 👊

I own a 2020 r ninet. Perhaps they changed some things. But my experience is completely different from yours. I love that machine. It’s so rugged. Filled with style, charm. It’s not a sportsbike and doesn’t maneuver like a sport bike, nor does it have the power or speed of a sport bike. It’s something else. But it’s extremely fun to ride. I have a hard time getting off from it. The torque is soooo sweet, gives me what I demand when ever I want it. I find it very powerful and Gives me extreme confidence on turns. It’s heavy but is so manageable. It’s funny cause I feel you’re talking about a complete different bike then the one I have.

Very same here. Have ridden the 2020 model (which I know own) and tested the 2023 (Euro 5 compliant) model. None of what is said in the video was in line with my experience, but then I come from rather simple, old bikes (Moto Guzzi V7, Ducati Monster, HDs, Yamaha SR500,...). So what I look for is a bike with good power, lots of torc, and, most importantly, a character that puts a smile on my face. That is why I bought exactly that bike!

OC.... Chase this must have been the 1st time you ever rode a bike with that motor combo....the little shaking and rotating feel as you twist the throttle is how they feel... the bike is a nod to the people that love the retro styling and the heritage of bmw... its a horizontally opposed air cooled twin.... they don't make gobbs of power... the suspension on that model is known to be very soft from the factory. I personally feel you did this 1st ride wrong by comparing it to the new bikes like the s1000/r/rr . try next time to keep your mind opened, and compare it to its competition, rather than from a different planet. it's a beautiful looking bike, very retro inspired.. I'm also not a fan of that engine, but I get why it's used in that model...heck an '87 gsxr 1100 only made 125hp; 78ft/lbs and if you try to compare it to a late 2000's model 600/1000 you wont be able to see that its a cool bike for what it is....all im saying love the 1st rides and the other vids brudda

I own a '17 R9T. You got a lot of things right, the seat sucks, the suspension is not the best, the brakes are solid and the riding position is good. But its got loads of torque, maybe not enough top end power, and I have no issues with weight or CG and I can push the bike hard through corners, I think you just need to get used to it. I love the exhaust note (I have the stock exhaust) and the burbles on decel sound awesome. Im always getting thumbs up from people for the looks of the bike. It def not the best bike on the road, but its rides as unique as it looks.

Lots of posters have already said it - with the R NineT, BMW were going got that raw, visceral old school riding experience with bare minimum of rider aids (2015 v1 just has ABS). In my opinion, it delivers that in spades. Then again, I've only ever ridden retros so I don't know what I'm missing. Personally, the things you hate are the things I love...the noise, the tug of the shaft drive, the low weight makes cornering very responsive, slightly agressive riding position, etc. I find the gearbox smooth, compares well with the Kawasaki I have. Horses for courses, I guess.

80 ft lbs of torque is very good and 110 hp is perfect for the street. You didn’t like it but lots of people do. It was released for BMW motorcycle 90 year anniversary. It a old school cafe racer. You have to have nostalgia for old bikes when riding it. If you like modern sport bikes with tons of electronics, I’m not surprised you dislike it.

I usually really look forward to your reviews. Production quality and effort you put into the final product is amazing. However I have never been as annoyed watching one of your videos as I am now. You completely missed the point of this bike. You went wrong when you started comparing it to the run of the mill retro or naked bikes. It’s not a super sport or a super naked or even a muscle bike. Stop looking for those characteristics in it. If you didn’t enjoy it then that’s fine, each to their own. But this video was a waste of time.

  • @IAmTheJollyOrange

OC. Really disappointed with how you can make a video which is pure negativity. It's not designed to be a 200bhp sportbike, it's a retro bike with a classic BMW boxer engine which is full of character. The entire point of the engine is that it has a lot of vibration and pulls the bike to the side when you rev it. I had use of one for a whole week while my s1000rr was having some work done to it and I loved the thing so much that I'm seriously considering buying one. I'm sorry fella but I've never been this annoyed watching one of your videos before. Regardless of what bike you do a review on, there's no need to be negative for an entire 28 minute video with not a single positive/constructive thing to say. I feel like I've just wasted half an hour of my life watching this.

OC. '21 R Nine T owners here. Had an '08 R1200 GS also. You are a bit off on some of this. Especially if you are looking at displacement. The boxer has always been a middling performer, but should have good delivery with a good torque band. The R Nine T is sold to two main kinds of buyers. First, the well funded hipster who wants a cafe-like ride without building an actual cafe racer or retro bike. This guy may not have the skill or time to put into a retro build. The second buyer is someone who wants to use this as a platform to build a modded bike and loves the boxer. I am the second. The bike reminds me of the simplicity of an old 750 Nighthawk with better power. I weigh in at almost 250 and have no problem getting everything I want from mine. Compared to the other retro themed bikes, I find it on par or better than most. Triumph, Ducati, and MotoG all have models in this segment and are generally within the same price and performance envelope. No matter what you do with one, they are primarily a retro novelty that can be built up into something quite fun. Never going to be a top performer in any way, but they are not intended to be that. By the way, that boxer shake at idle is a thing but I never notice it in motion. So, there IS a strong market for them. BMW has sold about 90,000 of them I think. Often they are the second bike and are like having an old Mustang that you take out for fun and attention. Mine gets a ton of attention and is a blast to ride. But, I like a bike that requires intentional, decisive input, which is absolutely true of this bike.

I bought a 2022 pure for my first motorcycle to learn on and I love it, I love how when you start the bike it pulls to one side, I like that it's "shaky", I was a little concerned since it's just a whole lot of bike but the fact that it doesn't pull a lot whole of power settled my nerves a bit. I love it's style especially since modding my own. It took me a few rides to build confidence but now i love zipping around town in this thing and occasionally going on the highway and the sound I love it. I Originally wanted a ducati nightshift scrambler which I got to test and after riding the rninet it makes riding bike like the nightshift cake. BTW nightshift is 🔥

Man I don’t know what to say but you are wrong about almost everything. I know this because I own a 2019 version. You said ride is soft - no it’s not it’s very stiff ride You said it’s slow - wrong again SRK motorcycle tested it for 0-60 and got less than 3.1 sec. How is that slow. Power delivery is absolutely linear in 3,4,5,6 gears where you will find yourself most of the time. Styling is subjective so won’t say anything, I personally bought it almost on the looks itself. That side to side shake is due to opposing boxer engine design and it is unique. Bike gets smoother and smoother as you catch more speed. Brakes are absolutely great. Man I need whatever you are smoking.

OC: Give that review to Beau ❤️ another time. Like many others commented you can’t compare an air/oil cooled retro style bike to a modern engine. Then you where wondering who’s it for. Well I don’t go for more power I go for character and uniqueness in a bike and it looks like that’s exactly what bmw are aiming for with this bike. A smooth power delivery is considered great to me. BTW: I own a 1986 Kawasaki ninja 600R and a 1971 Harley Shovelhead they both have many things I love about a bike. And I know you’re really not a cruiser fan. But I think this R9T is a sporty retro cruiser and is meant that way. I think your review overlooked that because you don’t have much experience in that category.

OC, Love the videos man keep up the good stuff, I’ve got the exact same bike and the centre of gravity of the bike is lower due to the boxer motor and it is a heavy bike approximately 222kg tare mass so pretty heavy. The steering is mostly weird due to the centre of gravity and takes some time getting used to in my opinion and the power I have gotten it reflashed due to aftermarket exhaust and intake (the sound isn’t anything special I’ll agree but I like the bike) so mines a lot more responsive compared to what I have seen with the one that you reviewed

OC. I demo rode one and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if that one has some mods to make it different compared to factory. I guess I'm a little odd, 😆. One thing I really liked was while riding at 70mph on the highway there was no wind pressure. It was like there was an invisible fairing. Some bike just don't jive with the rider.

Just a small piece of info here. BMW launched the R nine T in 2014 for their 90-th anniversary (which was in 2013) and they planned to produce and sell about a 1,000 of them. It's 2023 as I'm texting this and it is nine and a half years of production of this model and there are FIVE sub-models of it! Almost ten years of production and five versions.

I have an R nine T urban G/S myself. The R nine T is not ment to be "Fast.. smooth or flashy".. It's a bike with character. So yes it has a clunky gearbox, no wheely power or flashy new LCD screen. But you get a ton of character back like the shaking to one side engine (because it's a boxer). It's one of the more torque heavy motorcycles i have ridden ever.. all the power is in the low RPM range. Maybe the R nine T you rode was very shitty lol.. Because i had an R125, CBR600, CBF600, NC, VFR800X and i enjoy the R nine T over all the bikes i have ever ridden. Also steering/handling wise.. Give the R nine T another chance.. but not a 2015 model. Try a 2018 Urban G/S or Scrambler.. The R nine T you rode looks very weird power / performance wise.. Bad service or engine troubles or ex rekt bike?

OC - you are off with the motorcycle 😂. I have the 2021 model. Love it! Hasn’t changed much since the 2015 model. Needs a rear suspension upgrade, probably need to do my sag settings. But hey I find it pretty cool and easy to ride, steering response isn’t bad actually. A lot more comfortable in riding position then super sports bikes, but can’t really compare this to S1000RR or R or a Ducati Panigale. These are one of the oldest boxer engines around producing 80kw or something air cool means less power too. The GS is semi water cooled to increase the power on this. Probably need to ride this again with a grain of salt. But none the less good to hear an honest new rider opinion. Cheers and thanks.

Regarding the lack of power, there must have been something wrong with this specific cycle. That 110hp engine on the R1200R really would get up and go very well. I would compare it to the Bandit 1250S I had years ago. Not a real rocket, but certainly fast. You keep making the videos and I'll keep watching.

Chase, I own a ‘21 R NineT. The suspension feels much more refined than what you are experiencing with the early version. The ‘21 also has ride by wire, introducing ride modes which make a great difference even though it still doesn’t have gobs of power. With that being said, huge power is not the point of this bike. The shake of the engine on rev is typical of boxer bikes, and in this platform is an experience rather than the smooth delivery you’d expect from the s1000r, rr and m bikes. I recommend you try the newer version, as well as test it with an open mind on BMW bikes. This motor, though polarizing to ride, is really the history of BMW and the bike itself a homage to that.

Would not change mine for any other bike. Add a DKdesign front fairing that add even more of that retro look and helps for wind on highways. Suprised about the handling review as I love the large stock handlebar control. I believe 1st gear is a little short when in town or traffic (especially when riding with common cruisers like HD), but is just ok when opening it for a straight. Plenty of power in my opinion. Engine brake is just fine when you rev it enough.

Something's wrong with that bike. The bike should have way more power then that. I think the bike has been tinkered with. First clue is the aftermarket exhaust. Who knows if they chipped it or didn't chip it and added an air intake. My stock 2020 RnineT flies. Sure it's an air-cooled twin. And if you're coming from pretty much any 4-cylinder bike it's going to feel slow. But this bike moves and has really good torque. In my opinion... But I think you should ride another one if given the chance.

It is old school without the safety net of electronics, to the point that if your riding skills are lacking it will bite you but get it right and it will leave you grinning from ear to ear and wanting more. This may not be what you are looking for in your ride but it definitely floats my boat, I may even invest in some more sophisticated suspension for it. Sounds to me as though there were issues with the one you rode, the bike is not quick in modern terms but it delivers its power progressively and in a way that I am enjoying a lot more than I could have anticipated particularly on the bendy back roads local to me. Tyre pressures and suspension need tweaking to set the bike up to get the best from it, I suspect the R9T that you rode was not well prepped. Did you even bother to check/play with tyre pressures? Most of your gripes would have been fixed with more air.

I love the R9T, but I'm waiting until I can find one that's had a suspension upgrade... or I can pay for the upgrade myself. They're notoriously undersprung and I'm much heavier than you. Also, air cooled motors don't have the ability to put out as much power as liquid cooled motors. Look at the air cooled Monster 1100s. They just barely scraped 100hp by the end of production.

I've had sports bikes most of the time (from ZX10R, R1, R1000, CBR1000RR), and some bikes with crazy power. Of course not everyone will agree with me, and I'm not implying that you should, but at one point I felt like I'm riding bikes to get the satisfaction from speed instead of enjoying the ride itself. I can understand why Chase is saying all that about the bike, but in my opinion you might be jumping to conclusion too fast. Like many others say, this bike is probably not meant to create tons of power or speed. Not everyone's a fan of the taste of what it gives, but it does have a very distinctive feel to it. Despite the negatives, it's hard to compare to any other bikes on the market - at least for now. Just like any other genre of bikes, you have to like to feature it concentrates in order for you to appreciate it. Some might say sports bikes are all in favor, but to some ppl it may be just a super fast but uncomfortable, high maintenance, sensitive, show off bike. If someone said supersports are just for tracks, and they suck at commuting hence it sucks, it wouldn't make ton of sense either. So it all comes down to what you look for when you ride a bike imo. For me, it's enough power and torque to ride in the city as well as the long tours, and also enough for commuting. Yeah the seat's not super comfortable, and yes it doesn't have all the electronic supports, yes it's not giving me power like it did with my sports bikes. But I do appreciate the distinctive feel of the engine, even the vibration. I also do appreciate the looks, seats are comfortable enough for me. Not to mention this bike can be modified in to lots of different looks. The engine is proven to be solid and without much trouble through the years as well. Just changing the handle bars to clip ons and adding a front pairing can make it look so much different. Exhaust wise, like you said, it serves as you favor. Some like it, some don't. I like the stock exhaust too, not too loud but it makes a good sound considering it's stock. It all depends what sound you favor. Power delivery - like I said, if you're looking to buy this bike for it's power, you're at the wrong place. I don't think people who look for classic looking bikes are buying it for the power at all, as long as it gives enough power to take over lanes and accelerate when desired. Overall, I just think if you give it more miles on it, and open your heart and try to see it from the view of people who'd look for retro looks you might find it different (may or may not). I've watched your videos many times, most of the time I'd like to agree but this time I feel like this first ride was a bit hard to agree on. Also you find this bike if you're a fanboy of naked bikes from BMW with a retro look, this might be the only one to consider, but I don't agree with that. Also you seemed confused of who the target is, but in my opinion it's because people who buy this bike has a very specific need, not much bikes can give what this does. Not to mention the amount of this model being sold over the years. I may be wrong, but what I heard was that - originally it was to celebrate the anniversary, may be a farewell gift model to part with air-cooled boxer engines, but because it was so popular it was added to their line ups. Oh btw, I do have pros and cons, I'm not trying to say this bike is perfect or anything. I don't believe any bike can be perfect. You can't have it all imo lmao. It was fun watching the video, thanks :)

The problem with reviews is that they are subjective. There are no bad motorcycles, some just aren’t right for the individual. I personally had never ridden an R nineT. When I did I was very impressed, to the point the point I sold my Hypermotard SP to buy one. It’s been smiles ever since. I absolutely love the BMW. I can’t stand all the “tech”. Motorcycles, to me, need to be raw and fun. Lastly, when I hear someone complain about handling, it makes me wonder what air pressure they were running or if it was checked at all. Every bike I’ve ever owned or ridden handles poorly if the tire pressure is low. To make sure, I think reviewers should add the tire pressure they are using to their ride notes. Curious, what is your favorite motorcycle?

Yes, it's only got 110hp but also has a heap of torque and low gearing so it accelerates quite well - 0-60mph in 2.8-3.0s is hardly slow, but it does lack top-end power at speeds above about 100mph. But that's not what this bike is about - it makes you really feel connected to the bike in a way that most bikes these days don't. You obviously didn't get to try out the handling in this video riding only dead straight roads, but it feels very stable in corners and can keep up with anything else out there in tight mountain twisties on the road and is even fun to ride and goes alright on the track. The steering is a little slow and the bike requires you to move your body to get it to perform at its best - you really need to hang off the bike and use your body to muscle it around - that's a huge part of the fun of riding this bike. The suspension is not great and the bike benefits from a taller rear shock to both smooth out the ride, speed up the handling and also improve ground clearance. Dragging knee is super easy on this bike and it'll pop wheelies (albeit not great for them due to it's front-weight bias) as well while looking like a million bucks all day long. What more could you ask for in a bike?

Hmmm. I agree somewhat with the suspension comments. I don't find mines too bad on my '15 R9T and I don't have any issues with confidence throwing in to a corner. 110bhp for a laid back heritage range bike, that's respectable when you think about what it's for. It's never going to be a sports bike, so forget sports bike figures. It's competing with modern heritage like triumph, ducati scrambler and some harleys. My personal opinion is that it holds its own very well. Good power for what it is, remember there's 1200cc harleys with 67bhp! Not everyone's taste I appreciate, but what have you been riding that you don't feel engine braking on this? I went from an R6 to R9T and thought the front brake was binding 😂😂

Air cooled 110 hp low power 😃, literally has more power than air cooled Harley's and Triumph bikes. In the "retro" category only the Z900RS and CB1000R Neo Sport Cafe have more and they are liquid cooled (hence more power). 0-60 around 3 seconds. The RnineT is a down low torque power naked retro bike. The shaking is typical of boxer motors. For the dash, style, riding, it is in the modern retro bikes tradition like the Triumph Bonnevilles, Thruxton RS, Speed Twins, Z900RS, aka the R9T competition. It's not destined to compete against Super Duke R, Monster 1200S, Streetfighter V4S, GSX-S1000, and not even against KTM Duke 890R, Monster Plus 900, MT-09 riding wise.

I believe the fully flair touring version of these bikes used by the police uses the same or at least similar engine. I think you either have the bike on the wrong mode or you came in with too much different expectations of what you wanted the bike to be. This bike and its engine also fits more into the cruiser bike category. Cruiser bikes are tune differently than supersport bikes. A 1200 cc cruiser bike is on the lower range. In the realm of cruiser bike and how those engines are tune, this bike is great. Test ride a 1200cc harley or indian to compare. Engine is also a cruiser bike character. You keep thinking of this in terms of supersports and naked bikes.

As for the little give in the clutch pedal: that’s how you know when you’re in first. It also gives in sixth. That’s how you know you’re in sixth.
