What I loved about the US is that they fought like mad on everything. They were shaky on beam and all three - Kyla, Alyssa and Simone - could have easily fallen off, and had they been less disciplined and determined, they would have. Physical strength aside, it's the mental strength that helps set the them apart. Not that it always works, but it weathers them while other teams become more demoralized when they make mistakes.

Whoever mixed the sound for this video really should have lowered the floor music and raised the commentators, you can barely hear them. But I still love seeing Kyla Ross competing after the 2012 Olympics. I really hope she can hold on and make it to Rio in 2016.

I really appreciate how these announcers actually explain the rules and requirements for each apparatus when the gymnasts are performing- I'm sure MOST people watching already know these things- but for a lot of people, people like myself- who love watching this sport but don't really KNOW a ton about it- it's nice to hear explanations sometimes instead of JUST straight critiques & praises or negative remarks... Like how they explain "it's required to include 1 turning element, 1 front grip, 1 backwards grip... A step this size is .1, or this size is .3, she didn't connect that so shell lose that element..." I've been probably LEARNED more about women's gymnastics from watching just 2 or 3 of these competitions covered by British commentators than I have in the last 2 YEARS of watching coverage from the Americans! (I mean I AM an American- and I know how redundant and annoying it CAN get when watching coverage of a sport u already know pretty much EVERYTHING about when they repeatedly talk about the rules or requirements as if NO ONE watching has a damn clue what's going on!) But, it's definitely nice and helpful to OCCASIONALLY hear things like this for people like ME!

Lmfao. Sooo true- and I can relate WAY more than I'd like to even admit!! Ive been riding horses & competing in dressage, show jumping & mainly 3 Day Eventing with my horses for almost 25yrs- I'm 32 now- and so of course, I have TONS of Incredible professional photographs of me& my horses competing (as well as a good number of great ametuer photographer's I DIDN'T have to pay $20+ for ONE 8X10 photo from or close to $100 for an entire CD of about 20-30 pics from one single 3 day show, gag!) framed and displayed all over my room & house- most of which are 8x10 or maybe set 5x7s but a few of the really amazing ones ive had blown up to poster size & framed... And when I/other horse people look at an action shot of someone riding- u rarely even NOTICE the rider's face- the first thing you'll look at is how the horse looks- what position it's in over the jump in the air, how nice it's knees& feet at tucked up& how high over the fence it's jumping& clearing it- or in dressage, how nicely it's neck is arched and it's hind end is underneath it & it's not on its forehand- the extension & "flipping out" of it's front hooves during a lengthening movement... Youll also look at the rider's BODY position- nobody really wants a photo of themselves when their horse looks great, but THEIR position SUCKS & It's embarrassing & cringe worthy to look at time & time again if your seat , legs, hand etc are in TERRIBLE positions... But man, especially on cross country- where you're BOUND to have at least a couple of hairy moments when you're galloping 20+mph over 2-3miles over 20-30 big jumps that don't budge if you touch them... And I guess it's LUCKY we have to wear our helmets cuz it makes it a lot harder to see the RIDICULOUS LOOKS & EXPRESSIONS on riders faces sometimes over the jumps! I know I personally talked to my horse pretty much the entire way around the course too- more for my own nerves than for my horses' benefit, haha. So in almost ALL of my pictures, my mouth is open and I look like a total idiot. And half the time, in the air over a big jump or a big drop down a bank or into the water- your facial expression tends to read: "OH GOD WERE GONNA DIIIIE!!!" But, a riders God awful facial expression is the LAST thing we ever notice when looking at our photos... People who aren't "horsey people" will look at my photos & of course the first thing THEY look at IS MY FACE & they'll be like "hahaha, omg WHY would u FRAME THAT?!" and I'm like "what do you MEAN?! LOOK HOW PERFECT ATTICUS'S KNEES ARE OVER THAT JUMP! And my leg is damn near perfect- look at my hands- that's a DEFINITION beautiful crest-release!" "Yeah but... Look at your FACE!!! HAHHAAHA!" ....Shut up lol. I bet gymnasts think similarly when watching themselves on video or in photos- they probably look at their body positioning & the LAST thing they'll look at or notice is the stupid look on their face!! Hahha

I have to disagree. I think that in order to qualify for the team finals at worlds a team has to be good. Great Britain isn't as powerful as the US or as clean as Russia but they do some pretty difficult stuff, as all the girls in this competition. And I'm not even British. ;)

I thought they were kind of rude actually. Even though Great Brittan really did quite well gymnastic wise. But I thought the comments were rude such as 'oh that was an okay routine for the American's but not their best one' or 'that was okay for the Russians on the bars, but not that great.' Yeah really don't remember hearing that about anything their team did...

  • @malluu3

I've listened to quite a few gymnastics commentators over the years and this duo, Mitch Fenner and Christine Still, from the BBC are by far the fairest when it comes to how they talk about the gymnasts from countries other than their own. Yes, they cheer for the British gymnast a little more than the other but I think that that is to be expected. The still say positive things about each gymnast and explain the gymnastics we are seeing. The worst commentators are the NBC team of Tim Daggett, Elfi Schlegel, and Al Trautwig. They are just plain mean to the non-American gymnasts and say awful gossip-y things about them. I'm American but often I won't watch competitions when they air on TV and instead wait for someone to post the BBC coverage here on KZread even if it means I have to wait longer to watch it. (Although I did really like Shannon Miller commentating the live coverage this past Olympics) I highly recommend this article from Deadspin deadspin.com/5931440/fake-jingoistic-and-stupid-gymnastics-coverage-is-the-worst-part-of-nbcs-olympics

malluu3 I agree with you--but for more than one reason. I resent how they chop up the coverage and spread two parts of it, sometimes over a couple of weeks, and don't offer full coverage or fair coverage of all the competitors. They do the same thing with figure skating coverage--have one part, about an hour's worth, then schedule the other "half" two or three weeks later, and schedule it during the day, rather than at prime time where someone who works for a living (on weekends) can watch it. And that is, if they have it at all. Infuriating.

I've warmed up a little to Shang's routine. It's different and striking, and while she is not the most musically attuned or charismatic, she makes it work for the most part. It's better than last year's effort. Love the one and a half step out through to triple-punch front. The fact that Shang is China's strongest floor worker at the moment does not bode well. I know they have the talented Wang Yan, who will turn senior next year, but she is only one girl. I'm tired of seeing the Chinese gymnasts so weak on vault and floor, as well as being wildly inconsistent everywhere. I want to see a more complete Chinese program, not just bars and beam; this means more FX/VT specialists and more true AAers who are consistent.

Ky Penn I agree! They excel on bars with all of their gymnasts capable of scoring in the mid to high 15's. Their beams they need to be more consistent, but beautiful and difficult nonetheless. In terms of Vault and floor, they need an Amanar along with Wang Yan's Rudi (it would be nice if she can pull off the 2.5 Tsukahara that is rumoured) in order to be competitive with the US. Floor they need a tumbler point blank. They need someone who can pull off F or G difficulty tumbles like Simone. If they can achieve this, then they will surely give the U.S. a run for their money.

Joann Hilton A couple of years ago, there was a video on here which a Russian "journalist" posted showing the workouts and practices of the Russian gymnastic team. I stumbled across it by accident!! It was really interesting because it included comments by some of the younger members of the team --translated of course. The coach was interviewed toward the end as well, with English translation. He said the girls on the team are most cooperative and work hard, except a couple of them have status issues. He basically said that Aliya does what she wants, when she wants and for as long as she wants. Since she is the best of the bunch, and very "independent," she gets privileges the others do not and has to be treated "special." He said she was "like a daughter" to him. I looked high and low for that video for several days so I could post it for you to see, but I'm beginning to bet that it was removed since then because it might have been a tad too frank and revealing. Don't get me wrong. I love watching her. I suspect, though, from his comments that she is somewhat of the team prima donna.

Here are more things I want to see in Rio : Yao Jinnan do the Mo flip again, Simone do the Biles, Maroney come back and surprise us all with either the Cheung Fei or a TripleTY, and either Skinner or Victoria Moors do a double layout with twists. Also, did Giulia Steingruber change her floor music? I loved the previous one.... Ok, request submitted. You look magical, ladies.

I'm afraid if Maroney is focusing more on her floor, beam and bars she won't be needed as a specialist since biles is practicing a tty.. I love mckayla and want her back...but the depth of USA is so strong we could have a complete AA team... So much can happen and change...I guess we will see...

Then if they do, it won't get named after either of them. Maroney seems more capable of a TTY than Biles because she gets so much air time and it just looks like all she needs to do is twist a tiny bit more and get the triple round. If Simone gets consistent with the Cheng, she doesn't even need a triple unless Maroney also does the Cheng...She already does the Mustafina which is just 1/2 less than the Cheng.

Ky Penn I have to say, Im afraid you might be right. Biles has nailed all her competitions (except the American Cup in 2013 when Ohashi won) since she became a senior. As a senior she has just kept getting better and better. but I don't know whether Biles gets enough height to get the Triple TY. I mean if you look at the videos, she just doesn't seem to get the height that Mckayla gets with her Amanar. also Maroney did take the year off with that knee injury/surgery last year. Mckayla. needs to improve her all around score. and upgrade some of her skills if she wants to be considered for the all around toget into that final selection process.

Does anyone else find it a tad depressing that everyone is so far behind the US? This isn't even the best team they could have fielded. This is mid-quad, which is always a bit of a slump for most nations, but still....nearly seven points ahead of China. As cool as it is to see one country dominate a la Soviet Union, it's even cooler when there is a tight international competition. I'm sure next year, when everyone is going to get fresh blood, will be more competitive team wise.

  • @X_MissMary_X

    @X_MissMary_X

I don't, because I fully expect everyone to be much more competitive next year. Wang Yan will be a huge help for China, and Deng Yalan will also be a good addition (she does turn senior next year, correct? Information on the Chinese is always hard to come by) and will help vaulting A LOT. Iridon and Jurca will brig a breath of fresh air for Romania, and hopefully Bulimar will be able to make it to Worlds next year. Their bars should be far less dire. Russia- well, they have some upcoming talent (Seda!!) but they really need to start conditioning their athletes. The Rods need to go, like, two years ago. Great Britain should also definitely be strongly in the hunt for a medal next year and Rio- I can't wait to see what Ellie and co. bring! Brazil won't be in medal contention unless everyone starts imploding, but Rebeca and Flavia are really going to help boost their scores. Basically, I can't wait for the team finals for the next two years!

  • @withlove312

hpobsessor1 As I said, it _is_ a mid-quad slump, but the other teams could have put up more of a fight and assessing their performances just on their own, they leave a lot to be desired. Next year will undoubtedly be better for all concerned, with fresh blood filling out depleted ranks. But that also means the US is going to be _even_ better, with strong established seniors and talented newly turned seniors. At the very least though the other teams will be more competitive, I've already had my eye on all the juniors you've mentioned for a while now, plus many of the American juniors. And yes, the Russian girls need better training methods and more conditioning. In spite of chronic depth issues, they don't lack the talent as much as they lack an efficient approach.

America wasn’t “terrible” they were IGNORED- much like every other non eastern bloc nation in existence that competed. Certain countries had the judges in their control- mostly the Soviets- and that made it impossible for other countries to get their due recognition. If you want a prime example, 1988 team finals. East Germany should never have gotten that bronze medal, it belonged to the USA even with the penalty (a penalty that would never have been given to USSR, Romania or East Germany). The East Germans were ridiculously overscored on beam, full of bobbles and wobbles that were completely ignored. The reason countries like USA, China, France, Brazil and more are in contention today is because the judging is IMPARTIAL.

Amy Brown You are absolutely correct. There are a couple of videos right on youTube that show how they choose the gymnasts. (If they didn't remove them!!) They measure their arms, legs, torsos, etc. and if they don't measure up, they won't accept them into the school/program. The series is interesting, but really very sad, because if a boy doesn't develop as fast as others, they DO NOT give any encouragement, but put the kid down. The parents put a tremendous amount of pressure on four and five year olds often putting the future of the family on the child's shoulders. Sad.
