2013 Sonata Rod Knock Engine Failure Repair Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 2013 Sonata had a P1326 code and there was a rod knock which was in line with the Hyundai Recall for the Theta 2 engine. When I contacted Hyundai they would do NOTHING for me being that the car was 15k over the 120k mile extended warranty. So …… I decided to give it a look myself and see if I can repair it with the engine IN the car!

    THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. Hyundai refuses to replace my 129K miles 2.4L theta 2 out of my 2015 Hyundai Tucson "GLS" (VIN comes up as an SE, that's BS, but my GLS does have a 2.4L confirmed). I knew from the beginning ever since I heard this noise and notification of the lawsuit (both occurred a week apart!) that it was a rod bearing, because it's on the bottom end and doesn't have a pattern of knock. Sounded hollow but deep enough to assume a rod knock of some sort. At first I thought timing chain slap, but all of my timing chains have never failed, not even on my 1960s Mercury(s) still in service. Then, I thought the valves needed adjusted. Stalled my car even on a cold start! However, I was able to turn the key and start right up at that intersection, thank Jesus. I'm going to be using your video as a guide to fix my likewise issue because NOBODY has any good videos or explanation to this farce! Including Hyundai, themselves. I hope you are able to keep driving this car, but far enough to never consider buying a Hyundai ever again like myself!

    I work at a dealership in NC and we have replaced engines under warranty with way more than 200k miles. Hyundai Motor America will replace many engines at no charge. Its really up to the particular dealership to seek out the assistance from them for you. If they wont help you its probably the dealership not doing their part to get you some help.

    Not only what the guy said about making sure that the oil passage in the crank needs to be verified clean and not blocked but if a bearing spins in a con rod bore, the cap has been heat treated. This changes the steel crystalline structure of the metal (not for the good). Plus the bearing bore has been machined larger by the process of the bearing spinning in rod bore. All that said to tell you that the number one rod is trash.

  • @startube2788
    @startube27883 жыл бұрын

    The discoloration of that bearing suggests it got overheated. This means the oil flow to that bearing it is restricted somehow. You need to clean that engine inside very good, it could be that the oil passages to that connecting road are filled with metal debris or something, because in the factory these engines were not cleaned good enough. Maybe the machines responsible for cleaning the engines inside didn't do their job well.. The made in Korea ones, which they ship to Europe, don't seem to have this problem.

    I'm not trying to scare anyone off of these cars cause honestly I do REALLY like it. The issue is I'm not the original owner so I don't know how well it was maintained before I owned it. The biggest thing to do is watch the oil level like a hawk. If you get to consume more than 1qt/1000 miles, take out to the dealer to get them to warranty replace or repair the engine. Im Hong to have it all put back together by Memorial Day.

    Hyundai used to be a great company but I believe this engine issue has them in over their heads. They used to stand behind everything and now they are hiding and dodging the mess they created. They know they have a problem and yet they only offered to pay 50% of an engine replacement (after making me jump through many hoops to prove that my issue was not caused by owner neglect). How do you only live up to 50% responsibility?? Have had at least one Hyundai in the house at all times for the last 25 years and this one will definitely be the last one and the end of that streak because of the way they are handling my case.

    I know that prior to the class action lawsuit they warrantied the engines up to 120k so you should be in the clear. Contact the dealer and don't take no for an answer. If they say no, remind them of the class action lawsuit and say you want to be in touch with someone from Hyundai corp. Key....... don't take no for an answer!

    I'm in the process right now dealing with this. My pig is a 2015 Tucson GLS 2.0L. After back forth with the dealership, I reached out to Hyundai customer service. The guy was really helpful. I was armed with technical data to back up my claim as I work in a shop setting and my mechanics are very helpful to me. Code P1326. Look up Hyundai T3G and TXXM service campaigns. Your car must have had the knock sensor recall program done, and must have the P1326 code present if you wanna be taken seriously. Do not clear codes if you intend to take to the dealer. I'll try to update with my experience. Good luck.

    Being that the oil burned out over 1qt per 1000 miles, it basically changed itself. Lol. I would change the oil at about every 4-5k miles, but as I said in the video I checked and topped off the oil a couple days before the failure which was only about 2-300 miles later, so it burned through over 4qts of oil in that time which is horrible for a late model car.

    Misinformation by a customer service rep. The recall has nothing to do with the warranty. They’d cover it 100%. I’ve seen 2012 with 200k miles get replacement engines.

    @@JrZCarZ Some dealerships are refusing to honor the replacement be as Hyundai only pays 5 hours for the labor to do it. I got mine replace a month ago and love the car. I did call a few dealerships to get completion estimates, though.

    You probably just destroyed that crankshaft I guarantee you that crank is egg-shaped soon as you hear a knock you shut it off immediately that crank is beat you might get 20 miles out of it and it'll start knocking again you got to take the crank out and get it turned you ran a too long knocking it's like hitting a journal with a sledgehammer their egg-shaped I can't believe you even started it to show this video you ruined it

    Not only that (what you said is true) but if a bearing spins in a con rod bore, the cap has been heat treated. This changes the steel crystalline structure of the metal (not for the good). Plus the bearing bore has been machined larger by the process of the bearing spinning in rod bore. All that said to tell you that the number one rod is trash.
