2013 Sonata Rod Knock Engine Failure Repair Part 3...… Does the patient live or die?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 2013 Sonata had a P1326 code and there was a rod knock which was in line with the Hyundai Recall for the Theta 2 engine. When I contacted Hyundai they would do NOTHING for me being that the car was 15k over the 120k mile extended warranty. So …… I decided to give it a look myself and see if I can repair it with the engine IN the car. Does the patient live? Watch the video to see!

    This is an amazing set of Videos that you have done on your Sonata. I am very impressed with your knowledge and the detail you went into in outlining the step by step approach. I am very sorry it did not have a better outcome for you. I had a 2007 Sonata that gave me great service, and my daughter took it over after I was done with it. Just traded it in at 147,000 miles, since it was not being used much recently. Was looking at a used Elantra for a friend but your series of videos have convinced me that I have owned my first and last Hyundai. Thank you for your good work.

    No limit on the mileage for this recall now. Just took mine in with 165k miles and they didn’t even ask any questions, just took it in and said “If it’s the recall we’ll replace the engine for free”. They called me two days later and said “rental is on us and we’ll have the engine done in 2-3 weeks”. SWEET!!!!! Time to put your old bearings back in this thing and take it to the dealership.

    I just got my car from the dealership! After replacing the bearings myself I was not able to fix the problem. So the other day I was doing some research on google to see what else I was able to do fixed it. Then really small there was a link for recalls in one of the website i was on. And there it was hiunday sonata engine bearing recall but because I try to fix it myself I did not have much hope! So anyways I call schedule appointment to bring the car and after couple hours later they call me to tell me they were going to change the engine for free! I’m so happy. Now the car feels totally new.

    I'm glad I saw your video cause I'm very concern about my 2013 sonata. I always keep up with the oil changes and make sure everything else is good. Even though my car is not high miles yet. It's around 70000. I also got a recall on the fuel line might cause engine 🔥. I'm getting that fix by hyundai with no cost. I love my car I'm just worried about dying in it on the road or worst. Can't afford a new car so God is watching over me. Sorry for your lost of your car. Just be glad your alive and well God bless.

    Just left a comment on one of your other videos on an update, well I found it here and feel Hyundai has yet let another person down. I have owned 3 Hyundai's and have been happy with two of them but my 2016 Sonata will be my last Hyundai. I was one of the lucky ones and got the "new" engine but the hell I had to go through to get it turned me off of Hyundai. In my owners manual I should be able to go 12,000 km between oil changes in the summer, I couldn't even go 5,000 km without adding oil. I'm telling everyone who asks about my Hyundai to stay away from the brand. Too bad Hyundai doesn't get this or doesn't care. Thanks for sharing your experience with us....too bad the ending couldn't have been a new engine.

    Wow, I'm sorry that you could not get it fixed. Maybe you could find a rebuilt or new motor somewheres. I had a similar thing with a 2002 Buick. It was a sharp nice looking car. But recently the motor started leaking oil & coolant at the same time really bad. The garage said they could fix it for a little over a grand. But I decided to chuck it & buy a new Kia. I hope I don't have these problems. I hope you get your car fixed.

    I’m so sorry about your car. I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with now 115,000 miles on it. I started an oil consumption test with one dealer then called them before I took it back. They told me everything had stopped 2 days prior. I took it to another dealer they told me everything stopped a month ago. I’m taking it to a 3rd dealer next week. I hope and pray this will work. I also talked with Hyundai National to a nasty woman who did everything to shut me up. I don’t know if mine will be replaced, but this is my last shot. It’s burning a quart of oil a month. My engine light came on last week.

    Did you go through Hyundai first and see if they would honor their replacement from the class action lawsuit they have against them? I would start there first. Don't bother trying to do the bearings cause all that junk ran through the block and would need to be really cleaned then fully rebuilt.

  • @josephwiggins3115

    Good evening sir, but no offense on your repair. I give you great respect on even attempting to do this repair. I've literally been working on Hyundai engines for a very long time, and I'm a certified master rebuilder of their motors. You did stop the knock in the car, but you just missed one thing and that was clearing the codes. Clearing the codes would have stopped the CEL from flashing, and give the ECM an opportunity to identify that the issue was resolved in other words. Yet, I still give you much respect for even doing this sort of repair. I get these engines in all the time with spun bearings, but I use a complete rebuild kit, and I have not had one issue out of any of my repairs. The shoe string method really is a temporary fix, you must do a rebuild to get a permanent result. Thank you for the videos.

    I am sorry you went through all that work to find out that the entire motor was gone. I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 turbo. It has 67,000 miles on it. I think I have to change a couple of bushings on the rear suspension. Its making noise when hitting bumps. Already replaced the rear shocks, I think the rattle is coming from the rear lower control arm. I bought it from my neighbor and he said the warranty is transferable to the new owner as far as the drive train goes, up to 135,000 miles ? Is anyone in agreement with this, or is there a dispute here? Thanks.

    The check engine light is flashing because there is a multiple cylinder misfire. You can clearly hear the car missing when you first started it. This is part on Hyundai/Kia recall! You needed to check compression on the cylinders. There may had been a slightly bent rod that is throwing the timing off, which you should have checked once you took the bearings out.

    As far as I'm concerned, this wasn't that big of a failure on your part. The primary concern was the rod knock which you seem to have fixed. Who knows how long the other journals were pitted or damaged for before the #1 rod started knocking. Likewise, who knows how long they would have continued on before also making noise or seizing. I'd say this was a success - at the very least, you fixed the rod knock and it didn't cost much, even if it doesn't last forever.

    Same happened to my car but not as bad. Busy with it right now. Waiting for new bearings to be delivered. Just a note for your measurements. You are well out of spec. The tolerance is 0.031mm to 0.045mm, not inch. which translates to 0.00122inch to 0.00177inch. Assuming your rod mark is B, you need to order the black color lined bearing from the dealer. For others with the same motor who are doing this and want the rod cap bolt torque spec. it's 13 - 15.9 ft-lb +88 to 92 degrees.

    My 2013 Tucson spun all 4 rod bearings by 104k miles, the mains were pristine. Glitter everywhere. The camshafts have 1 bearing between the 2 of them, the head and caps serve as the bearing for the other 11 contact points which were wallowed out to the point the cams started chewing a relief in the side of the head. Not a robust design in my view.

It basically provides a lifetime engine block and powertrain warranty for all vehicles falling under this class action period!. They are BSing you if they say otherwise. Tow that vehicle to a Hyundai dealership and tell them you have a P1326 code, they are required by law to honor that class action settlement. Don't give up!

    I have the similar engine which my 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid has and the engine is locked. The car was towed to the KIA dealership, I had all the recalls done. SC200 Knock sensor software updated and 15 years 150K miles warranty. There is no Recall for the engine they said which is SC140 unlimited mileage warranty one. But I don't believe that this engine did not have manufacturing failure as well. My car was 150340 miles and they said hey your car is over 150K miles. I said are you guys kidding me. It is only 340 miles more and it is almost 150k. And I asked what if my car was 149999 miles, they said they would replace the engine. This is how KIA shows its reliability to their customers. They lost me. I will never buy KIA again, I was looking for something new from KIA models. But I will not buy again and will never suggest it to my friends as well. They are playing games and they are not honest ! no show goodwill! I don't think they can gain the reputation in the USA Market !

Pretty scary stuff, towed to dealer, now they say Hyundai will not replace engine because knock sensor recall was never done. We knew nothing about it. If the dealership where we bought it had done the recall work we would have a new engine, no questions asked. Legally dealer can sell used vehicles with open recalls. I know others have had engines replaced without recall work performed however maybe their engine wasn't as dead as ours, it sounds terrible. I've heard it depends on the Hyundai dealership you're using. I tried Hyundai National, they said they would not open a case. Still owe about $12k on this vehicle. Perhaps an attorney could help? If anyone has any suggestions I would be extremely grateful. The vehicle belongs to my 21 year old son who is a college student, he and his girlfriend we're driving when the vehicle left them in danger. State Police had to shut lanes down until vehicle was towed. Really bad experience, so glad they're safe at least.

Gdi engines tend to thin their oil with gas going past piston rings which dilutes the oil making it act like a much thinner oil.this happens mostly with cars that are driven short distances and not coming up to full engine heat saturation. Gdi engines are ok but you absolutely must change your oil more often.your 2020 should last a very long time if you do this.i never ever alow my oil changes to go much past 3000 miles. I own a 2020 santafe with the non turbo 2.4.it runs mostly about 30 miles a day broken up into several short trips .this is considered severe service and requires more frequent oil changes.i use a high quality conventional oil since I change it more frequently. You forgot to erase the old code before you started the car! If the code is there, the car will not rev even it doesn't have the knocking issue anymore. When the car was started you said you didn't hear any more knocking, therefore if you erase the code the car would have run fine. You could have gone for maybe 20k mile more before the car would have headed the the junkyard. Now it wouldn't have lasted a long time, but just enough to get you thru the pandemic. Also you could have used the heaviest weight of motor oil, like Mobile1 15W-50 and have less if any knocks. It should have been OK to use this oil on this engine.The engine limits rev because it detects engine knock, so a heavy weight of oil should eliminate the knocks. I ran into this problem. When I erased the code, the engine would rev, but when I drove it, and the knocking started, the code would come back and limit the rev again. And found your video.

    The battery was disconnected for about 2 weeks prior so no codes were stored. I also did clear codes after and that's not going to help anything if you have internal damage. You should NEVER have to put such a heavy weight oil in a modern car. All you are doing is making the root cause of the problem(spun bearings) which will lead to a catastrophic failure. When that happens, I wouldn't want to be in the car...... there's a reason Hyundai put the KDS in the PCM firmware update.

    @@JrZCarZ I would sue Hyundai for the price of the car new being 17K or so. Is BS just because you are over the 120K allowed to get the vehicle into the dealer BEFORE then does not make it right. You have a P1326 code and know is bad rod bearings since Hyundai can easily hookup their rod bearing clearance pass/fail tester to all 4 cyclinders and see FAILED. I am in the midst of getting a new engine 2014 2.4L sonata 86K miles and rob bearing clearance test now FAILED. What pisses me off is NO warranty at all on the new replacement engine ONLY on if the rod bearings go out of 'spec' again and fail the clearance test of pass/fail. Come on Hyundai, honor my NEW engine 1 year / 12K miles at the VERY least. It really should be next 3 years and 36K miles if you ask me since supposedly a NEW engine should last 3/36K right?

  • @josephwiggins3115
    @josephwiggins31157 ай бұрын

    I actually rebuild these 2.4l Hyundai engines, and by far this was done all wrong. 1. The motor was not removed from the engine bay, which the shop manual calls for you to do this particular job. 2.There was no check for engine slap, which could also trigger the knock sensor. 3. The plastigage measurement should have been the #1 indicator that the crankshaft pin was extremely worn or the connecting rod inner bore was worn and needed to be replaced. 4. This guy did not know the proper reading of his measurements....let me learn him. Oil clearance specs for this 2.4l is .031~.045 mm (.0012~.0017 in), and his gauge was clearing reading .003 of an inch; which equals to .076 mm. This reading tells me that his crank shaft is shot at the pins, and there is extremely too much clearance between the pin and the bearing. Furthermore, the reason why he did not receive a knock YET was because he replaced a new bearing that is thicker than the worn one, and that one will eventually spin in no time. He never cleared the codes before starting the motor either. Moreover, that misfire could have been something simple if this guy just understood basic engine diagnosing. There is a lot more I can say about this, but I'm not. These are very good engines and easy to work on if you know what to do. Consequently, many guys on these channels that are DIY's need to be a little more careful with the influence they are putting out here about these cars. These are good motors that are fixable and reliable. Take Care.

  • @JrZCarZ

    @JrZCarZ

    7 ай бұрын

    First off, if I wanted a full rebuild I wouldn't be doing it in the dirt with the engine in the car in my back yard. Common sense tells you that if I was actually trying to rebuild it, the engine would have been on a stand indoors. There was nothing 'simple' about this problem. If you actually watched the other videos you would see bearing material circulated all over the engine. A knock sensor or clearing the codes wouldn't fix this problem. If you actually rebuild these engines and suggest that, I feel sorry for your customers who think they are ok just to have bearings spin a couple thousand miles later. I leave with this thought...... If you rebuild these engines, which would mean that you've rebuilt a few, how can you claim they are great motors? A great motor wouldn't need to be rebuilt. A great motor wouldn't have as many accounts of failures as there have been ALL OVER the internet. A great motor wouldn't have caused a class action lawsuit that Hyundai/Kia lost and now have to replace these engines....... I had a 88 Lincoln Town Car with 427,000 MILES on the original 5.0L engine and it was still running strong. THAT was a great engine. Same goes for the 4.6L in any Panther platform car. Great engine for longevity. Getting just over 130k miles out of an engine is pathetic nowadays. Most didn't even make it to that.... Shit engine that was good on gas.

I have taken care of the car since I bought it at only 24k miles on it. It doesn't seem to smoke or eat oil or trip any engine lights so not sure but I read it can be a sign of the classic piston slap issue they had on elantraa from 2011 to 2016.

    Dude it’s covered by a recall. Why didn’t you take it to a dealer.

    Jr. If the hyundai still has it and the check light is still flashing, what you have to do is remove it from the limp mode and do a reset memory and erase the fault code and thus the engine accelerates again, it only remains to test it a few times to see if the pcm does not give the P1326 code again. If possible you can give me a call or send a text. I give you my email. Ekomotriz@gmail.com for the first contact and give you my phone number. I am a mechanical technician with 20 years of experience and I have already seen this problem three times

    They apparently have the discretion to deny any repairs, cause they told me to pound sand.
