    15 months ago I bought a 2017 Ford Focus ST off the show room floor with 105 miles on it...cheap! I love it. I made it thru last winter with snow tires just fine (Buffalo, N.Y.) now my plan is to find another older Ford Focus to use in winter months, so as to spare the ST any more harsh winters.

  • @Kingsoupturbo

    @Kingsoupturbo

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nice!! I think those ST have a limited slip differential so even better in winter! these generation focus have sure come down in price, the very low engine cover and overall ground clearance is not the best in heavier snow, but other then that a pretty good winter car! (for a dedicated winter car, I'd probably go with a 4wd car though, for those days you need it, can't be beat!)

    Glad your focus was reliable. mines was in and out of the dealership for transmission issues up the day I hit 100k (transmission had a 100k warranty due to recalls) right before that I ran the transmission to the ground so I guaranteed they put in a new one. Now I'm at 115k and I feel the transmission trip. Also, my door latch randomly grave out on the driver side door in 2016 luckily I wasn't driving it (recall) as well and there is the random sync issues where it won't let me pair my phone until I unplug the battery. OTHER THAN THAT, the car has been reliable, the struts did give out around 2015 which I replaced but other than that only basic maintenance like fluids and oil (spark plugs at 90k) I had to replace nothing else. I feel like of I didn't have those transmission issues, this would hold up better than a Toyota or Honda which anytime I get into one of those from early 2010s I always feel like my Focus just drives, handles and feels better.

  • @Kingsoupturbo

    I've had 2 full transmission shift solenoid failures, and its a lazy 1-2 shift now that you can feel the clutch slipping. I had the tie rod end links fail too and some wheel bearings but really not much else, well the PCV fuel tank collapser thing happened and the Sync died and I did a ton of work to fix it. They screwed up with the transmission for sure and won't really own up to it. Its a shame as I agree the car is a better handling machine, and in theory the dual clutch trans is better then a corolla\civic torque convert auto, but its just had so many issues, sigh, ford.

    Its an excellent first car, good on gas, mostly reliable. I'd look for a manual transmission myself if I was turning 16, no auto trans issues and a lot more fun. Honda civic\accord are also top of the list, Mazda's are really nice drivers cars too. Really depends on your budget, look at 5 different cars, test drive them (if you can) and it'll become clear which is the best for the money and which you personally like the most.

    My 2012 SE has 97,500mi on her and still going strong! An upgrade I would HIGHLY recommend is a K&N intake system. Really opened up the engine and makes it way more zippy. It also pulls way harder, or at least feels like it does and the noise is sooooo nice. I also have an aftermarket sound system with subwoofer and it bumps. I also recommend the Steeda rear sway bar. Tightened up the handling a ton for what it cost and was easy to install. I’m like you and only use the best on it. I drive it very aggressively (especially with the mods) and it holds up to it well. I’ve done races with it against friends and it’s done really well, surprisingly so for its size and appearance. Sips on gas. Great little car!

    @@c2damak I mean it can't hurt. The main issue I had is the solenoid controller assembly that moves the shift fork had a couple of failures. they've updated the software 14+ times now to get it right. Some of the earlier transmissions had main seal leakage, unless the trans has a fluid pressure sensor, I can't see how the fluid would affect the shift quality especially since the clutch assembly is dry and not wet like most dual clutchs (which is should have been since day 1) I'll do some research on Focus Fanatics to see if fluid changes can help! appreciate the idea. There are some interesting released internal Memos that came out a few years back on the doomed dry-clutch DSG project, how Ford was too deep into it to abandon it even though the engineers said it would never work right. Apparently in Australia they forced Ford to pull the DSG's and put in conventional Auto's they were so appauled by the failure rate. After 200,000k on this car, it drives great, but the quality of engineering is pretty poor, I wouldn't buy a Ford again. Phewf, this got long!

I have read some distressing things about other transmission failures, mine is starting to get a bit lazy on the 1-2 shift when its cold. I think most of the transmissions are ok from what I've seen on the internet, but there are more then a few that have had issues. This is often true of most automatic transmissions though. @@andresbecerra315 Ahhh I wish somebody said something like this 2 months ago lmao!! Not your fault though, you probably just seen this and tried to warn me. I ended up getting a 2013 Ford Focus se at the same dealership I was talking about. They wouldn’t budge on the 2012 one but they brought the 2013 down to 5,999 (still high, especially because of what happened). I kind of felt odd when dealing with the dealers, but this was my first time getting a car. Well, not even a MONTH of having this car, I have to take it to a Ford dealership to find out what’s wrong with it. Not even a day of having the car i started feeling jittering and shaking when taking off from a low speed, it kept getting worse, to the point where it was scary and I thought my car was going to stop in the middle of traffic. And then as I was taking off in a parking lot my car stopped, power steering stopped, accelerator wouldn’t budge, it was my gears that got stuck between reverse and neutral and my car stalled. Anyway, so took it to the Ford dealership and dropped it off, they had a hard time getting a hold of my warranty so my car was in there for 2 days before it was looked at or touched. They call me 2 days later and tell me what’s wrong with it, my gear shift, the TCM, and something else in my transmission (I forgot the name). My gear shift wasn’t covered and costs almost 3k. Even though I have 2 different warranties (from what the dealership said where I got my car), so it should have been covered. So I talked to the Ford dealer who said 2 of the parts will be there over night and it could take up to 5 days to get the TCM, I’m like ah bummer, but whatever. Then I call him a little over a week later to check in and see how it’s going, the dealer said oh well we don’t have all the parts in yet, and the TCM could take weeks or months to get here!! I’m like wait a second, you said up to 5 days. And this whole time they didn’t have a rental available at all, I checked everyday. So about 4 days later, I get a call from them saying my car is ready to be picked up, it thankfully didn’t take super long to get the TCM, I got lucky. My car was still in there for 2 weeks though, and I got it back 5 days before my daughter started school. Let’s just say, the dealer who sold me the car, screwed me over big time, they said nothing was wrong with my car, and they lied about the 2012 one being in an accident, when one of the dealers was the previous owner lol. When I asked the guy one last time if there’s anything mechanically wrong with the car he said “oh well, you know, no there’s not but the thing is, we can’t open up the TRANSMISSION”, I never said anything about the transmission, so that tells me right there they for sure knew what was wrong with the car. I’ll be going into the dealership to talk to them about this because what they did was illegal and dangerous, these guys watched me get in this car with my daughter and drive off their lot, knowing there was something wrong with it, and didn’t disclose any of it to me. Oh one more thing, when the Ford dealer called to say my car was ready, he said one of my tires had a bubble in it, and that they all need to be replaced. I took it to American tires and got all of them replaced which cost another almost 600 dollars, and I got the warranty on them. Now my car runs beautifully, and feels amazing with the new tires, after spending almost 4K to fix everything 🙄 It was extremely stressful, and I’m still furious.

    direct injection is not all that, it has known issues, and its a problem with the tech. normally, fuel injection will spray into the intake manifold, and the atomized mixture moves over the valves, which helps keep them clean. with direct injection, the injectors obviously inject the fuel directly into the cylinder, so the problem is, there is nothing washing the carbon from the valves , the valve seat, the intake etc. fuel system cleaner will usually help clean these areas with a conventional setup , but not with direct injection. all direct injection, from every manufacturer to my knowledge, has issues with carbon build up. eventually it will need a carbon cleaning. dont let me tell you tho just look it up. depending on what you consider expensive, this may not be to bad tho. otherwise direct injection is great, just know it does come with its own curse.

    JulioD07 I’d buy one only with a manual transmission for a gasoline-powered model. Avoid the 1.0L 3 ecoboost in the Focus as the fuel economy savings aren’t really what you’d expect. The 2.0L turbodiesel is a good pick, and the PowerShift paired to that engine is a different design than the garbage PowerS**t in the gasoline North America Focus. The trans fluid needs to be changed every 60-80k kilometres, so that can be pricey.

    @@Kingsoupturbo It was all about money for Ford. Ford should have done what Chrysler did with the Fiat 500L when Chrysler replaced the trouble-prone Fiat dry dual-clutch trans with a regular torque converter automatic transmission after the first model year of 500L production in North America when the litany of complaints started rolling in. Probably Ford had too much money tied up in the PowerShift debacle to admit that it wasn't a good design. Even Ford Australia ditched the PowerS**t after 2014 in the Focus. The Detroit Free Press has emails from Ford engineers that the shudder couldn't be engineered out of the transmission. I feel it is 100% unlikely that Ford will replace the clutch pack for free again. The 1-2 shift in my car causes the trailer towing effect of lurch forward then back. I was driving up a slight incline recently and the clutches started to engage and disengage quickly and caused the entire car to shake. It hesitates a lot from stops also, and I worry that in an emergency the car will hesitate. I think it's time for another clutch scrub, as I'm sure the seals in the transmission have failed AGAIN and the clutch surfaces are coated in oil. Hyundai/Kia continue with dry dual clutch transmissions and use them in gasoline and hybrids/PHEVs. Those transmissions had a horrible reliability record in the first-year 2016 Tucson but apparently are a lot better now, and way better than what Ford uses. I still think the VW/Audi DSG is the best though, but it also has an expensive service of $400 CAD every 60-80K kilometres - this is required. I know some Acuras have a wet clutch DCT now, but I don't really know about their reliability to comment.

    @@runforit420 wow interesting! I didn't know that about Fiat and dropping the dual clutch. I read about how they screwed up the production of the shift transfer motors too, and how they're on like the 10th revision. Mine failed when I was far from home, 1 dealer refused to fix it right, drove through the mountains with no shoulders heavy traffic as the trans would just shift into neutral, yelled at another dealer to fix it right, that shift controller last about 500k before it failed too. I"ve read the horror stories about how when the oil seal fails, its gonna keep failing over and over, probably scoring on that input shaft they won't replace the whole thing, thats a nightmare, i'd be furious. I've owned like 30+ cars, I"ll tell you that automatics fail, dual clutch, converter, seems that manual are the only truely reliable things you can get (or you do actual service regularly) The VW DSG wet clutch is better but like you said the service intervals are close. Modern torque converter auto's are pretty good though, ford really screwed up. I read the internal engineer emails on the trans that came out recently, needless to say I"ll never buy a Ford again. If I get another trans failure, I think I'll swap the 5 speed manual in. My 1-2 shift when cold, it slips a lot, I wonder if I've got seal leakage too, I"d better check the fluid level, sigh! Thanks for the response!

    Kingsoupturbo You probably have to take the fill bolt out to check the oil level to see that it’s flush with the top of the hole. I have seen spotting on the driveway lately, so I know the transmission seals have failed again. I know that the previous owner replaced the clutch pack within 20000 km. So in total five clutch packs. Considering how unhelpful Ford Canada has been I know that if I ever bought another Ford this is how I’d be treated: basically told to f*** off. The Aisin (Toyota) torque converter automatics are pretty reliable. They’re also used in a lot of VW products in North America. Thanks for the reply - I hope you have better luck with Ford in fixing it than I did...

The Dual clutch was something I wanted when I got this car, it was great for a while, sometimes still you get that fast gear change and great MPG (the point in theory of dry clutch DSG) But I've had 2 full failures on the trans with the solenoid packs blowing up (on the mountain pass in heavy traffic of course) The Evap failure they refused to acknoledge or cover for years (collapsing gas tanks) is pretty bad too.
