Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D., is a clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. In the span of his career as a clinical scientist, educator and practitioner, he has written prolifically on the nature, assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) and related disorders.
Dr. Barkley has developed one of the leading theories of executive functioning and its role in the nature of ADHD. From this theory, he has also developed numerous clinical implications concerning the diagnosis and management of ADHD. To learn more, visit russellbarkley.org.
Dr. Barkley's presentation will focus on:
Understanding the nature of ADHD as it relates to each of the five major executive functions: working memory, self-management, emotional self-regulation, self-motivation and self-control
Developing a better understanding of how this theory leads to more effective interventions for individuals with ADHD.
Visit learningcenter.unc.edu/ for information about the UNC Learning Center programs. Also a link to his slides are the page.

This is the most important lecture i have ever listened to. 48 years old and only now understand why i am the way i am. Found ways to to hide it over the years and to work around it but still need the pressure of a looming and imminent deadline to focus the mind enough to stay on task. For all the praise and rewards i get for my work, i've always felt i could be even better if i did not drown in too much time. I'm in tears.

And now I’m in tears too. I’ve dragged myself through an entire career and life and family and only treacherous deadlines have FORCED me to execute. WTF??

I’m 50 and same. Haven’t achieved nearly as much as I know I’m potentially capable of. My main problems are fatigue, poor sleep and emotional disregulation. Which don’t sound like adhd issues but after watching many of these videos, I have learnt they are. Without the fatigue I think I could have found ways to overcome the emotional disregulation, lack of motivation & time blindness. But the regular fatigue is so hard to overcome. I often think high energy levels is the true meaning of wealth.

It's not going to happen quit trying. So validating!!!!

As someone who has just started the long journey to try and get my life back on track again after diagnosed but untreated ADHD left me almost non-functional in *all* areas of my life, I have to say I appreciate finding this lecture. For the first time, every single symptom, deficit, or characteristic fit together to make a three-dimensional picture instead of just a short, semi-relevant list of the same vague symptoms. I had gotten quite disheartened when researching the subject earlier because I saw so many people in 2014 blaming the person with ADHD for what usually amounted to being "flawed," "bad" or "lazy." You provided more than enough insight and evidence, however, to encourage me that this is what I need to disclose to my treatment team so that I can rejoin life, regardless of what other opinions may be.

As someone that was "diagnosed" and had "treatment" (drugs/therapy/after school classes) I have confidence in saying the "treatment" did nothing but hold me back.. As a kid my imagination was wild and wandering..the prescribed "meth" they gave me stopped that.. Once my mom saw that I wasn't the same kid she asked me if I wanted to keep taking the pills.. I said no.. They made me a zombie.. My grades fell.. I acted out more extreme if I was on edge. When Highschool came around I was finally off the pills. That was when I started to feel like myself again and it really helped me.. I tried smoking weed in grade 9.. And since then I've been way happier and felt more comfortable in my skin. Not sayin weed is a better alternative, but I am saying prescription drugs suck and they barely ever work as intended. ADD/ADHD is a chemical imbalance for the most part.. But also somewhat mechanical. For instance.. When I was in grade 7 I was allowed to walk around the class while the teacher asked questions.. Because for me physical movement helps my brain flow.. I'm too creative to answer simple questions lol

The teachings and investigations of Dr. Russell Barkley should be compulsory teaching not only for Pyquiatrists but physicians in general. Since 1986, Psychiatrists are telling me that ADHD disappeared after I was 12 years old. At 58 years old, my life had been much easier if I had gotten the proper medication and guide that Dr. Barkley has given to humanity.

Ive known I have been ADHD and was taking 20 mg twice a day for long time and I could only really see a week ahead or less even! Looking back I realized it affected EVERY one of my decisions in life!!! OMG so I tried higher dose and WOW omg I actually was not taking enough and thought I was just failing at everything and like had trouble with EVERY one of those executive function levels you explained. The thing is I actually had a injury as a baby almost where I had stitches above my eyebrow and so like its obvious my frontal lobe is going to be affected. The can't do what you know is so right I realize now! I realize that when I like actually needed to remember to do something I would not remember when I needed it. Things are so much clearer. I wouldn't of tried higher dose without this video and your explanation of executive function!!!!! THANK YOU MAN Life CHANGED! Please upvote this so he sees it!! and other adhdr's!

It's like when we have little things that we should put in their place and we don't do it, like a jacket or shoes and after a week it has accumulated so much that we get overwhelmed and it just keeps accumulating, it's same with all other areas of our lives. You have one small task that we don't do because we cannot get ourselves to do it , then other things / accumulates on it till it becomes continuously overwhelming till we feel completely helpless and overwhelmed that we just let everything pile and our whole life feels out of control and we feel depressed and frustrated , if we lucky, an hyperfocus episodes comes up and we attack it all with invigorating energy only to repeat the same patten again. Or if not our whole life just falls apart and we depressed and dropped out from school🥺.

Story of my life! I've just found out few hours ago what I've struggled with whole my life and I've been through therapies and changed a few psychiatrics over the decade, talking about these exact symptoms over and over again and I was diagnosed with anxiety and then given antidepressants which made my life even worse (I wasn't only still unable to finish or even start anything but I even stopped worry about it). I also attended some group therapy until I was told by therapist that she wouldn't tolerate me being late any more (even though she knew that was one of my reasons to be there at first place and I also wasn't late every single time and when I was it was for about 10 minutes). She told me it was me seeking attention!!

As for Dr Berkeley’s idea about sticky notes - (which I have tried) I notice them but with the dyslexia I don’t ‘see’ them! Also, I listened to all this video but so much I miss because my mind has wondered off so I’ve missed certain concepts - and that’s with hyper fixation. All so frustrating!!

This is such good info. I just take issue with one bit at the very end. When he says the prefrontal cortex needs blood sugar he is spot on, but then he recommends sipping Gatorade or lemonade or some sugary drink. I think he does this because it’s logical. However, as soon as that sugar drink hits the bloodstream insulin is released and calls every bit of sugar out of the blood and makes you crash. So it does the exact opposite, it pulls all the sugar out of your brain and will make you flunk the test. Best to have plenty of fat and protein on board, and in my personal case be in the state of ketosis which by far gives me the most brain power of all.

Man you are right! My life is totally turning in a new and positive direction after Dr Barkley lectures and explanations, I will add this: Ive been on low carb keto almost 1.5 year now, I can work focusing 30min max, after my brain get fatigue, I need rest or close my eyes, rest thoughts, glucose is essential for me, better from berries or half banana, same here, if I take refined sugar or any high sugar drink or food, after 20min..crash,..same...but i cant be calm or concentrate if i go ketosis, what makes me sleep less, restless, go for another pleasure experiences...before sex, bike, exercises for longer, loosing focus...I removed many stressors from my life, ex-girlfriend, family toxic members, friends, toxic and loaded information environment, phone, instagram, internet (essentials only), or anything that was depleting my dopamine levels or reducing my serotonin...so...I am on my way on recovery, they said dopamine normal levels can take from 3 months to 12 months to get back to normal, If I go ketosis, nervous system shake and I feel wrong..if I go back to carbs, crash and laziness, procrastination, emotional dominance, weakness...etc...so...i think is better to say each person can try everything on finding your own balance...better fine tuned brain chemistry and emotional regulation...in my case..living alone..isolate and sacrifice my old self..in order to clean the field on grown daily my new one...we are all in the same thing...and see the Dr's Work and comments like yours make me feel connected to something bigger than what i can understand...take care man love and peace...hope everybody can heal and recovery...being in low dopamine ADHD experiencing life is not worth..lets get back up 🙏🏼👍🏼

I noticed that Dr. Barkley towards the end of the first lecture mentioned as "a friend" someone picking him up with 60 sticky notes at the dashboard within his car, notes that also served to hide the speedometer, unfortunately, apart from representing an example in accordence with the doctors advice to keep external reminders. Important, I think, is yet no lesser such examples of the "not unthinkable", so to speak, of friendships between those (some of us) rarely if ever reaching higher university degrees or simular, and those who may. His serving as a protester against unneccessary division with this, as such, where weaker parties will at worst serve one their "you can not" as also unneccessary confirmation of what one so unwillingly served to prove oneself within a life that indeed may be in danger by being or by becoming not to a tiny degree lonely, even while the lesser visible or at worst severely hidden qualities may be both many and important, still, like acting as someones friend examplifies, of cause.

Hmm so the "wall" that is need in executive function (as used by the Robinson Crusoe example), signifies a lack of boundaries between self and other people? This is very good for me to know! I am on a trial run of Concerta XL but am still having problems with boundaries between myself and others. I blamed myself thinking it was a willpower thing as the medication should be fixing that stuff right? Turns out I was wrong and I am very grateful to this video as I can take this example to the specialist next week and perhaps get the therapy treatment a little quicker as a higher priority. Thank you very much :)

  • @agaragar21

Yes, both (Toxo an ADHD) effect EF's...cause they're both brain damage...in most cases though ADHD doesn't reduce your IQ and Toxo does. It doesn't reduce IQ or cause EF damage in women though...so it has more specific damage to the amygdala, women lose their fear of rape or murder from men. Also you can get a blood test to test for Toxoplamosis. Also culturally ADHD seems more severe , here's a analogy, (I might be wrong)...a nation of Toxo infected persons is called Serbia...a nation of severe ADHD'ers is called a state prison. But I wonder did the higher likelihood of lowered IQ in addition to the EF deficits abet the slaughter that occurred in the former Yugoslavia? (stupidity and aggresivity, without understanding future consequences)

Glad I’m not alone. I also have Aphantasia-and neither do I have a “mind’s” voice, test, touch, etc. In my early twenties. Lucky enough to be perceptive enough of people’s subtle differences, that’s why I know I am different from the “norm”. Aphantasia does suck. Makes you wonder how all of these neurological problems are actually interconnected. I also have a sinking suspicion I have autism (I can’t adequately read other people’s emotions because I can’t relate to shallow emotions, and I am logical most of the time. I also equittable and treat everyone fairly-so I “disrepect” authority. And I also am unfettered by human-made societal constructs.)

If you really want to help adhd people, it’s PDF (pretty damn frustrating) that NONE of the DIAGRAMS he DISCUSSED were SHOWN here. This might as well have been an audio presentation only. It was only halfway helpful, like having adhd is being able to DO things only halfway as well as other people do, at times. So thanks a lot for the HALFWAY helpful information provided here.

Hmm. Im thinking of how a person with ADHD (such as myself) can use these tools, as Dr Barkley says, to conform to western values. Sure. But DO I WANT TO? I may live in western culture BUT is it healthy?? Who naturally has a culture that mirrors what we call ADHD? Native cultures of North America. Scottish culture too. And if I had ANY choice I would prefer to live in a Native culture. And sugar, no. thats bullshit. I am on the edge of ACTUAL Diabetes and there is no way in FKK im going to sip lemonade. Some interesting information here--but problematic conclusions.
