How to change the spark plugs on a 2011-2016 Toyota Sienna with the 2GR-FE V6. It wasn't a bad job except for the coil connector tabs breaking. Well and the fact that I got distracted while filming and left the paper towels in the intake ports. It's always fun doing a job twice. Luckily it was quicker the second time.

    Loved the detail in this video, but it's worth noting that you definitely got the torque spec wrong on the throttle body bolts. NOT 15 ft-lbs. Per the toyota service manual, it's 7ft-lbs. Your instinct was right, and I should have listened to mine before I cracked one of my bolts off. Please consider uploading a voice over on your video to make the correction.

    I'll have to double check our info. The source I was working from showed 15 which definitely seemed wrong. We've since added two more sources. There's not an easy way to change the video but I'll see if I can pin your comment to the top. Thanks!!

    Now I know why it cost so much to replace the spark plugs in a Toyota. What was Toyota thinking? (Another way to get more money from the customer) One of the worst engine designs! Replacing plugs should be just as simple as doing a oil change. Thanks for going step by step on this process!

    Perhaps the people who complain about Toyota Engineering should try to make a front wheel drive by not turning the engine 90 degrees. Then the spark plugs could be reached easier. Toyota makes excellent engines. Working on the cars is not for everyone.

    That's what I'm saying. I replaced the spark plugs on my Kia Optima last year and it was pretty simple, so I figured I would do the same thing with my Sienna. After watching this I'm not sure I still want to attempt it - I suppose it will depend on what the mechanic wants to charge me to do it.

  • @OTRAMM

    You're way overdue for spark plugs. As they wear the gap gets larger. Larger gap means more energy to make a spark which works the coils harder. Spark plugs are a lot cheaper than ignition coils to replace :)

    In that case, id triple check everything that was unplugged and look for disconnected vacuum lines. A large vacuum leak can cause the engine to shut down. If it's run long enough to set a check engine light id see what the codes are. That'll help point in the direction you need to look

    I just had spark plugs done, by Toyota, on a 2016 Sienna. I don't think they replaced any of the gaskets or seals. I now have had a big loss of power and a lean mixture. No service light, yet it is evident I have a vaccuum leak. What are the odds that they skimped on the gaskets and seals, and now it has to all be redone? I already had them check the work, once, and they swear the computer is coming back all within specs. Though they never test drove the vehicle once, since my complaint. No manual attempts at testing for a leak.

  • @OTRAMM

    @OTRAMM

    I wouldn't think they'd neglect changing the gaskets. Stranger things have happened though. If there's no check engine light how are you seeing a lean mixture? Are the fuel trims way out?

  • @mic4902

    @mic4902

    @@OTRAMM I coincidentally have had a 20% decline in fuel economy, and I have only 400 miles since they had the engine apart. You can feel the sluggishness on acceleration, slows down twice as fast as usual, and even at 70 mph on a flat straight surface the current fuel economy gauge reads in the teens (where I'd otherwise see mid twenties). Idles start off at ~1,500 rpm on a cold start, and come down to where they should be once warm. My paperwork only notes new plugs, the rest of the charge is labor. I'm at a loss, but the service manager will personally be doing a test drive with me in the morning. If he tries to send me out the door, saying everything is okay, just like his technician did, I'm inclined to drive to you guys (I'm not that far, a few hours away). Toyota, at the same time did things like the serpentine belt, transmission and differential fluid changes, but the only other things done since that recent service work is I had the tires rotated and balanced, and I popped in a new air filter. 121k on the vehicle, never any trouble before, and I just had a drop like that in the fuel efficiency. Something is up. That's why I have to look at it as a lean mixture, per my experience and the slightest odds that no code has been thrown yet. Oil change at that service appt too, checking all they did, and my brakes were done less than 15k ago. Even if a caliper has malfunctioned, which they want to say could be the case, or even a wheel bearing, there's no pulling to either side. They say there are no issues there, and they cannot figure it out or think of anything else to check. We even did a alignment check, and still all within specs well enough (rear tight toe is .007° out, that's it). You guys have any ideas? I was going to call you tomorrow anyway. Thank you for responding!

    @@OTRAMMSpeaking of "strangers things have happened." I once had a Toyota dealership, at 36,500 miles (so just out of warranty), try to tell me that my suspension was entirely shot on this vehicle. To the point they had me on the phone with Toyota, and Toyota offered $3,000 of a $6,000 bill for that work. The shop tried to get me for $3,000 to their pocket. Nothing ever wrong with the suspension. I'm losing trust in Toyota technicians, for good reasons.
