No offense meant, but your voice sounds like a cross between Michael Jackson and Beast Boy from Teen Titans. Very detailed and well produced video. Do the plugs need to be replaced as "routine" or only if you start experiencing misses or trouble codes? -My 2015 Sienna has about 140,000 miles, still gets 25-30 mpg on hwy, and runs like a top. Went for an oil change(wife insists having it done at dealership even though I change it on my truck) and the service rep tried to sell me the plug replacement and fuel system cleaning right off the bat based on mileage alone.😠 I declined, then they came up with, "You have an oil leak either from main seal or valve covers, we can check that out..." I said, "Just the oil and filter please." As far as checking dipstick, the engine uses ZERO oil and not even a drop has appeared on my driveway. Pulled the engine cover and there seems to be a tiny bit of weeping around the cover, but not enough to make any run past the edge. Would possibly re-torquing those bolts even be worth it, or should I replace the gaskets, or just leave it alone? Great channel. Subscribing.

(But I have no idea what Teen Titans is) Yes, spark plug changes are considered routine maintenance, and the service interval for the 2GR-Fe spark plugs is 120K miles. That said, I suspect that many Siennas (and other Toyotas with the 2GR-FE engine) have their original plugs at high mileage simply because of the cost of a spark plug change. It may well be that many people wait till they get a misfire code, perhaps due to a failing igniter or oil on a plug from a failing valve cover gasket, etc, then the owners respond with new plugs, igniters, valve cover gaskets, etc at that time. The benefits of replacing the spark plugs are mainly increased fuel economy, cleaner/smoother idle, and greater responsiveness. Also, at least having a look at the spark plugs can give you an idea of something that might be going wrong, especially fuel-wise, which might not trip a check engine light but still needs to be addressed. As for the oil leak: I would try to determine exactly where the oil is coming from, to be sure that it is not oil accumulating on or near the valve cover from another place. So, I'd clean up the area, then check it after a drive and while idling. Replacing the Bank 1 valve cover (the rear head) is a big job which requires all the steps shown in the video, plus removal of a few more parts and the valve cover itself in that cramped area (so if you do that job, you might as well change the spark plugs while you're back there). The front valve cover is much easier, so hopefully that's where the leak is, if there is one! If you don't have ramps, maybe pick some up and have a look yourself from underneath. Even a small oil leak will make a mess: if you don't see a mess, and you're not losing oil, then maybe the service manager wasn't being honest. I hope that helps -- good luck!

When do you know to replace the manifold gasket? I changed the valve cover gasket a few years ago and noticed a big improvement in oil burning around the engine.

This may very well be the most comprehensive and complete videos I have ever seen. As a former Toyota mechanic I have viewed hundreds of videos here on KZread, many of which go from bad to worse. Your video is on par with something I would expect to see published by Toyota and Lexus for their instructional packages. Excellent work, you should be very proud of what you have created here.

They do give me loaners. Bought the Sienna to drag my kiddo friends around. Because of course....if buy the top tier GV80.... doesn't come with a 3rd row.

I can't afford to take my vehicles to the dealer/shop and do 90% of the repair work that I have the tools for. I won't tackle anything that might cause damage or where I might get stuck. To that end, I watch far too many KZread videos, mostly because I can't completely follow what is going on or too much gets edited out for my level of comfort. I was on the fence about taking on this job with so many components and hoses involved, but L35 covered every single step far beyond what most were willing to. Can't thank you enough!!

This is the best how-to video I have ever seen. It is clear, well organized, and thorough. It shows hidden tabs, inserts and slots that is very helpful in removing plastic parts. It clearly shows where to pinch the clips on plastic part connections and electrical connectors to release the locking mechanism. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this awesome video together. After breaking two ignition coil connector clips, despite being very careful, I found that it is easier to cut the tape on the wire harness bundle to create slack so that I don't have to disconnect it from the coil. Again, thank you L35. Awesome jog.

This is one of the most encouraging videos to tackle one of the most unnecessarily cumbersome jobs I have ever seen. I just couldn't bilieve how much I need to remove to access 3 spark plugs on my Sienna.... but your video makes it look less intimidating. It's also a good opportunity to clean the throttle body and service some gaskets. Btw, I think it's worth it to test 3 of the new plugs in the front first, before installing them in the rear location, just to make sure they work 😅. Thank you 1000000 times for this!!!

I have an '06 Avalon 2GR FE. When I changed my plugs I found oil on the boots. So my plug change turned into valve cover gaskets and tube seals. An adventure to be sure. On the Avalons you need to pull the cowl in order to get the surge tank off. It's a lot of fun.

What a bonehead design; removing throttle body to change spark plugs! . I thought my bmw n55 #6 plug location was a bonehead design -but this Sienna takes the cake. Thank you for the knowledge transfer. it was very relaxing to listen, watch, and learn.

Your attention to detail from all your videos leaves me speechless time after time. You should be teaching these modern day mechanics on how a car repair should be all about..! This 2GR-FE video reminds me of my 3MZ-FE nightmare. Both have the same horrible impossible-to-reach cylinder 1,3,5 and that black intake plenum must be removed to access. During my 3MZ-FE drama, the air flow sensor big pipe was broken and need to buy from Lexus dealer for $$$. Not sure if it's worth consideration: while you are in cylinder 1,3,5, you might as well replacing the coils with brand new ones even if they are not giving trouble b/c with all the vibration during this process, coil 1,3,5 may go out next week or month. It's like extra insurance 😅

Oh yeah, these engines are too much stuff in too little space! It seems that Toyota has committed to cramming ever-expanding transverse V6's into ever-shrinking engine bays, LOL! Thanks for sharing your 3MZ-FE experience - good job sorting it out : ) I agree about the coils: if you have more cash than time, then swap in new coils while you're back there; if you have more time than cash, cross your fingers and hope they last 200K. I would definitely recommend replacing all the rear coils if you're in there for a second spark plug change at 200K miles or more, and keeping them the original rear coils as spares for the front bank when those eventually fail, since those are so easy to replace. For anyone changing plugs on a 2015 Highlander 2GR-FE , you absolutely do not need to remove the cowl below the windshield. Plenty of room to get those rear plugs out. I just replaced my plugs, 2 hours and 15 minutes start to finish. This included cleaning the Throttle body and mass airflow sensor. My local Toyota dealership quoted me $746.00 , parts and labor. 5 hours labor, what a ripoff! I installed OEM Denso FK20HR11 Iridium plugs, $11.00 ea from Autozone. I initially purchased a set of 6 off ebay, they were counterfeit parts, thank you AMD @ car care nut for providing examples of the many counterfeit products out there. Lastly, the upper plenum rear mounting bolts are not at all difficult to get to on this year Highlander. Overall, this was a very smooth and easy job.

Watching this video reminded me of being a firefighter. 34 minutes of hard work before you actually get to work. Climbing stairs and then get to work.

If you need to change Sienna (or similar Toyota V6) plugs, this is the only video you should watch. Literally a step by step video manual with torque specs included. As she mentions, for the rear plugs, you don't necessarily need to remove the wipers etc; and I only removed the insulator below the cowl held by the 4 square plastic nuts. I could still visualize/manipulate everything, and the plenum still had clearance to lift/slide out, but I had to unbolt the bracket from the rear of the plenum. To reinstall, I loosely bolted the bracket on the plenum first and rotated it while sliding the plenum back in place. If only all car repair videos were this detailed. Thank you for posting this, A+

Thanks for posting this video. I've done this method as well as the method where the air filter is removed. This one seemed more straightforward. I removee the 2 bolts and a nut that held the rear coil harness and had plenty of slack to avoid removing the clips to the coils. I only removed the rear bolt to that difficult bracket and had no trouble removing or replacing the top of the intake. It took me about 3 hours start to finish.

Today, I changed the spark plugs on my 2011 Sienna with 110k. Everything went smooth, many thanks to L35. This is an amazing video with all the Torque values. I ordered the parts online from Toyota with discount coupon, 6 spark plugs, 3 intake manifold gasket and throttle body gasket cost me 95 dollars , shipping included. It took about 3 hours. Most difficult part getting the back screws holding the intake manifold. I had to use multiple extensions and 5/8 spark plug socket to get the back spark plugs.

The dealer wants to charge about $1K for replacing spark plugs on my 2013 sienna.. there's nothing wrong with them... but the mileage is getting up there 120K .. don't remember if I had them changed before at 60K miles... this video will save me lots of money .. it looks doable.. thanks for posting this video .. very helpful and clear instructions.

Thank you for watching! Yes, those tabs are just so easy to break -- too easy to break! If you decide to go back there and replace your tabs and you can spend a little more, I suggest to consider buying the Toyota parts. I am satisfied with the Amazon connectors, given the price and availability, and people have used them and say they have held up fine. But I will say that the Toyota connectors are a bit tighter (ie, better) fit. I think I'll end up replacing the two connectors in the front that I broke (and replaced with Amazon connectors, as seen in the video) with two OE Toyota connectors. I was able to recover 5 connectors from a newer Tundra at the junkyard this weekend, and so I might swap those out. The downside is, of course, that the Toyota connectors might just break again, seeing as the Toyota connectors are tighter ... and a more brittle plastic. The Amazon connectors seem like the tabs would last longer without breaking (less brittle), but again the fit is not as tight as the OEM. Thanks again for watching, and good luck! : )

Thanks-- this is not a normal spark plug job, that's for sure! It is more challenging than most spark plug jobs, which is why the shop price is so high. The front plugs are easy, but those rear plugs require a bit of patience, for sure! I'm very glad that they only need replacing every 120K miles! Haha, thanks for watching, and good luck! : )

Thank you so much for a masterful, educational, and thorough tutorial on changing the spark plugs on the 2GR-FE. I bought a 2010 Lexus RX 350 with the same engine two months ago and it has 114,500 miles on it as of today. I have since watched many YT videos on how to DIY in replacing the spark plugs, but none was satisfactory. Some of them were shortened, some of them were disorganized, and the rest were just poorly explained -- until the YT algorithm decided to put yours on my screen's recommendation list. Now I have no excuse to procrastinate on this DIY job, which the dealer and some local shops quoted between $850 to $1,000. If I live 100 miles or less away from your shop, you'd have already become my car's designated mechanic for all of its future repair needs. But too bad I am in NY. 😕

Excellent video! Very informative and detailed! I just hope I am as patient and as calm as you are when I attempt this tomorrow! I have a 2013 Limited Sienna and can now see and understand why it's such an expensive job. I've replaced headlight bulbs and cabin air filter but have been hesitant on the spark plugs! Take your time and give it a whole day, and you'll be alright! Be sure to check out other videos on this same engine (2GR-FE) that might give you some more tips -- there are a few other videos of the job on Camry's that have this same engine, so it is very similar (you also have to remove the wipers and cowl on the Camry, too). Very excellent and great details, needed details. I have looked at many, well a few, remove and replace spark plug videos for Sienna and it seems that you have provided every detail needed by a less experienced DIY to do the job successfully. Thanks for paying attention to greatly needed details, which will save me a lot of time tracking down things that I need and repeated visits to the parts store. Also, I l really like that the video was filmed on a, I guess, tripod. It was not shakey. Thanks again.

Best DIY video I've seen for replacing spark plugs for Sienna 2GRFE engines. Please don't stop making videos like this for mass produced cars like this.

I have a 2013 Sienna and this video has tremendously helped me with the spark plugs change. This video is worth its weight in gold. Or, considering at the rate the price is going up, in gas.

I don't think Toyota could make a better video. No way did I think I would watch the entire 1 hour 20 minutes, granted most was at 1.75 speed. Level of detail and delivery is phenomenal!
