2008 VW GTI MK5 Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you consider yourself capable of performing difficult to extremely difficult maintenance, this video will walk you through replacement of the timing belt and water pump on a 2008 Volkswagen GTI 2.0L Turbo MK5. Our total cost was approximately $325 for the kit plus a gallon of antifreeze. Total time was about 10 hours.

Thanks for the video guys. KZread is a DIYer's dream as we help each other out. I just did this job on my 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0T FSI with 120kmi. I'll add my thoughts as it might help someone out. I'll hit the points using the timeline in this video. 4:27 - You can leave those hoses on as they really don't get in the way. 5:21 - On the Jetta, this hole is essentially useless, but I was hoping it wasn't! 8:45 & 9:10 - This is the hose you want to take off. Remove the clamp and then carefully work a small pick around the inside of the hose to break the glue loose. Shouldn't take much effort. 13:09 - You don't need to take the motor mount bracket out!! Here you can see as far as you need to move it. You can get the bolts in/out, cover off, the belt off, access the tensioner, idlers, and water pump! Plenty of room for tools and torque wrench with the bracket in this position. 19:59 - Lubricate the water pump o-ring first so it doesn't potentially tear on installation plus it's easier to move back and forth to line up the bolt holes. 21:40 - Clean the crank sprocket of all coolant that may have gotten on it. 25:52 - Don't bother with the bracket and save the time, frustration, extra work of moving A/C lines etc, and cussing! lol Do the right thing if you can afford it and replace the TTY bolts. Good luck!

Thank you SO much for your additional comments (and to @FearlessMods for the video). I tackled this myself in a day and a half, including some other maintenance. I left the inner motor bracket in place and it saved me a lot of hassle. The plastic timing covers are a royal pain - honestly my biggest gripe with the entire job. My additions: - ECS Tuning has a great document with torque specs and such. It's their Audi A3 2.0T installation guide. - Removing the spark plugs will make it easier to crank the engine manually. I replaced my spark plugs and coils while I was under the hood. Ensure the engine is free of debris before doing this. - Removing the cam position sensor and tensioner gives a bit more room on the front of the engine. The lower tensioner bolt can only be removed if the tensioner is held fully open. I cut a large nail down to length and used that as my dowel pin to hold the tensioner open. Remove the lower bolt first and then the front upper and lastly rear upper. The front upper can stay in the tensioner if you plan to reuse it. - Removing the hot side (pre-intercooler) charge pipes is helpful. I had to replace 2 o-rings on them as I had an oil leak there (failed PCV = oil in intake). - Installing the timing belt can be a bit frustrating to get right the first time. Triple check that everything lines up before firing up the engine, especially after you put the crank pulley and covers back on. - I only needed 1 gallon of 50/50 mix to top the system back up, since it's not a full system flush

You can lock the tensioner in place with a pin. Use a 16mm wrench on the top of the tensioner then slide a "pin" in the hole. That way you can get the 3rd tensioner bolt out

Thanks for making this video. Just did the timing belt on my 06gti last night. Watched this video 3 times to get acquainted and remembered every step without having to use my manual. Went flawlessly. Please keep making repair videos of the gti :). For others: Only thing I didn’t do was remove the 3 lines connecting to the hpfp, etc. I choose to remove the pcv and take the bolts off the IM. This allowed enough room without having to worry about breaking hoses, etc.

Great vid guys helped a lot. Doing a Seat Leon FR in the UK. Pretty much the same and the hard part really is just that bracket "beast". I've got the new belt on but just run out of daylight. I've been following the Haynes manual and it suggests removing the driveshafts, disconnecting the exhaust and the other engine mountings while supporting the engine with a hoist. Seeing this video helped me realise the bracket CAN be removed without lifting the engine out. Only thing doing it this way was that my plastic timing belt covers have suffered a bit of damage by yanking on the bracket.

Remove upper and lower timing covers first.. remove dogbone mount to allow you to jack engine higher... came right out. I did not have to release the AC lines.. However, i did disconnect the hose you pointed out at 8:47. Basically just follow the install guide ecstuning has.. they do the job on a audi a3, but its basically the same exact thing.

Be very careful to inspect the sprung tensioner and observe the arrow for the correct way to spin it. On the VW mk4 diesel they decided to spin it the other way and many mechanics including myself got caught out. Lasted 3 months with the spring bending the wrong way then it snapped............not good that one. One other bearing is a bit funny too. It has the arrow like the others but that isn't the way you set it there are other marks further down you line up. Beware of VW's. They can bite. Study the sprung tensioner and don't over torque the little 13mm nut!

Just buy a Spline set. Cheap as. And you don't need to crack the big center bolt unless you do the oil seals. If you dont need to do the seals, don't do them. At 200km belt do them. All shops dont do the oil seals unless they are weeping, Its just trouble. VW oil seals are quite tricky too, you need a plastic sleeve cheater, as they haven't worked out to give a leading edge yet like the Japanese always do.

Why are you doing this job if you haven't got the correct tools? You don't have 16mm socket for the engine mount bolts, triple square socket for the crank pulley bolts, torx sockets for the timing cover bolts, 19mm 12 point socket for the crank sprocket bolt... Is there anything else missed? You may have succeeded in removing everything, but chances are you've rounded the heads off on all the fasteners so when putting everything back together you wont be able to torque any of the fasteners to spec.. Nice job!

Well that train of thought is surely stupid. Who cares if the bolts aren't torqued to spec. Mk5s value doesn't depend solely on if the timing is done correctly or not. Theres no way of knowing any kind of work was done properly on any mk5 gti out there for sale,Dealer or some random mom and pop shop. Also Actually go and work on a car before you comment negatively like that. Even if you go to the dealer right now and get the timing done, you won't know if everything was "torqued to spec" VW gives the spec just so people out there don't hand torque it. But at the end of the day if it works it works. I bought my mk5 gti with all of its maintenance done at the dealer and I'm confident the timing was done also but guess what? Im still going to do the timing.

The motor mount is a real son of a b*** but its alot easier to get out if you push up the engine as far as you can without cracking the gearbox mount on the other side.. then its possible bus still sucks tho lol
