2008: Alanis Morissette 'Hands Clean'
Музыка
Alanis Morissette sat on a stool, mike on a stand. Intimate setting, adoring crowd. The Masonic Temple, Toronto, Canadian Music Week 2008. Singer-songwriter, with Joni Mitchell references. Confessional lyrics, delivered right in your face, a palpable sense of defiance driving the song. The directness of her lyrics, and her point, is almost as plain-spoken as the early country music of the Carter Family.
Performing her 2002 single “Hands Clean,” Alanis connected directly with the adoring audience, her legs crossed, hands resting in her lap, calmly singing softly to each individual in the Temple, speaking just to them. Given that connection, it’s charming when she’s surprised and delighted by the crowd response. Almost like she didn’t know how much they loved her.
Alanis Morissette is an international superstar, with sixteen JUNO Awards and seven Grammy Awards, and records that have all gone Gold and Multi-Platinum. Recording her first demo at the age of eleven, she later appeared on children’s television, and even recorded generic dance-pop, but her iconic 1995 album Jagged Little Pill made her a star, with 5 charting singles, topping record charts around the world. She has since gone on to sell more than 60 million albums worldwide.
2014 HD edit, assembled from 2008 SD line-cut.

Not me listening to this at forty-three and very unexpectedly weeping my head off. Thanks for putting this into words.

If it weren't for your maturity, none of this would have happened If you weren't so wise beyond your years I would've been able to control myself If it weren't for my attention, you wouldn't have been successful and if If it weren't for me you would never have amounted to very much Ooh, this could be messy but But you don't seem to mind and Ooh, don't go telling everybody And overlook this supposed crime We'll fast forward to a few years later And no one knows except the both of us And I have honored your request for silence And you've washed your hands clean of this You're essentially my employee and I like you having to depend on me You're kind of my protege and one day You'll say you learned all you know from me I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a guardian I know you sexualize me like a young thing would and I think I like it Ooh, this could get messy but Ooh, you don't seem to mind Dude, don't go telling everybody And overlook this supposed crime We'll fast forward to a few years later And no one knows except the both of us I've more than honored your request for silence And you've washed your hands clean of this What part of our history's reinvented and under rug swept? What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget? What with this distance it seems so obvious Just make sure you don't tell on me, especially to members of your family We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our inner posse I wish I could tell the world 'Cause you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and keep your firm body Ooh, this could be messy and Ooh, I don't seem to mind Ooh, don't go telling everybody And overlook this supposed crime We'll fast forward to a few years later And no one knows except the both of us And I have honored your request for silence And you've washed your hands clean of this Ooh, this could get messy but Ooh, I don't seem to mind Ooh, don't go telling everybody And overlook this supposed crime We'll fast forward to a few years later And no one knows except the both of us And I have honored your request for silence And you've washed your hands clean of this

Who is this song about?

Her music producer in the 80s. During the production of her first two albums in Canada I believe she had a relationship with him (her being a teen and him being in his fourties’ I think) she’s said the song isn’t her outing him and hoping to get him in trouble, but instead her being open about how she believes she wasn’t ready at the time and he abused that power and the age gap to his advantage. It’s a beautiful song about being honest with herself and admitting it wasn’t her fault and that she was simply too naive to understand what the relationship actually was. I hope that helps.

most of us believe it was her manager/producer back when she was a pop star in Canada before Jagged Little Pill. It's about statutory rape.
Wow Ryan Reynolds really messed up lol

This song is actually about the relationship between her and manager or producer when she was underage, and how he took advantage of her. The verses and pre choruses are sung from his perspective and the chorus from hers. When I found out what it was about it completely changed my perspective on the song
