2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata Hard Top | Road Test | Edmunds.com
You might have thought, as we did, that the world's most perfect, tidy, eminently usable folding soft top didn't need to be replaced by a power-operated folding hardtop. Particularly in a simple, elemental car like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the inevitable added weight and complexity could dull its reflexes and blur its focus.
Don't worry.

Having owned a 2008 Retractible Hardtop MX5 for two years now I find it to be the best car I've ever owned. The fun factor is off the charts, the hardtop operates flawlessly, and everythintg is laid out logically. This one will be my last sports car since I'm getting up there in age. I couldn't ask for a better car.
Nice review. I own a 2007 Miata Touring with a soft top and love it! I've never had any other car that's put a smile on my face like the Miata. The Miata is simply a blast to drive and own. They're inexpensive, reliable, and sexy. Every time after I park my Miata, I always look back at it. It's such a great looking little roadster. It's odd in a way, because every time I do drive my Miata, it gets compliments almost anywhere I go. People of all ages have come up to me and my Miata and want to talk about it. It is not my daily driver, but every time I do drive it , I want to drive it more. Get one, I promise you won't regret it.
Still love my '97. Had it for 3 years now with NO PROBLEMS. Nothing. I think I had to replace a couple of wiperblades. It may be underpowered, but you really can feel the rear wheels in the back of your pants on turns. People who say it's a 'chick's' car are just jealous - they know that whatever they bought cost them more and delivered a lot less.
After 11 years it's still looking great for its age and generation. What a great fun little car.
IMO, the PRHT on my 2011 MX-5 makes sense for a LOT of reasons, none of which equate to being lazy: Being able to sleep at night knowing that a thief can't knife his way into my car Better weather protection & insulation from the elements than a ragtop ..NO leaks at all in the PRHT Very lightweight & less complicated mechanically than similar ones out there. Takes up zero trunk space Makes the car look more expensive than it really is No need to replace it OR own and garage a separate hardtop
always wanted a sports car, bought a brand new M X 5 GT. in 2007 all the options, side sill extenssions front & rear extenssions , sports susppension package , traction control, limited slip differential , steel pedals , almost every thing i could get , minus the retractable hard top, just the plain old soft top! I LOVE THIS CAR , handles like a dream , i only drive it about 4500 klms a year, only seen the rain about 4 times, i"ll keep this car till i die! Do yourself a favour & buy one!!
I m an mx 5 owner it has drawbacks like every car but i love it i dont have regrets that i have it ...
Great video!! Great car!! Now I feel I can't wait to drive it to work tomorrow!! =] I added this to my favorites.
this is one of my top 3 list car to have
Good summary of the new hard top
having driven both cars. i would say nothing beats a mx-5 na for pure fun. Somehow you know you can control it going sideways.. it's a special feeling.
Great Video
The hard top.makes the beast even more sexier
You simply can't go wrong with an MX5. Also, don't forget the color when getting one - they look like cartoon cars in white, baby blue, etc. But, in British racing green (mine) silver, yellow, metallic grey, etc. they look awesome and turn heads. These cars will still be daily drivers 30 years from now. The only other vehicle as reliable was my '86 Ford F-150 w/300 I-6 and 4-speed.
that's all TRUE... it turns better than any other car on market today... and it's also the most fun car to drive...
From every test/video I've read, the Miata always rolls an almost unbelievable amount in stock form. Shaun Bailey (Road&Track) said he almost hates the stock Miata vs. one that has upgraded shocks/springs as it transforms the car from roly-poly comfort to track-ready with great feedback for less than $800. 30mph is kind of low, what's the difference at highway speed? This is a fun car you're going to take weekend mini-vacations with, which is going to be 60mph+ for large portions of road.
@lovesvag69 You're not arguing with me, you're agreeing. I said the extra 70lbs makes it slower! I have the soft top, because I didn't want 70lbs of dead weight, and I drive it with the top down most the time
I've got the Mk2 and I'll tell you something. It's AWESOME!!!! If you're ever gonna get a car get this , it's relatively cheap, it's easy to drive and it looks really cool. xD
@coolerdude44 Some high powered engines are actually super light, GM LS engines come to mind.
@bgiber the mx5 doesn't need more power, 0-60 in 6.9 seconds is pretty quick. and anyway, the car's not about power it's about balance. doing a more powerful version would be going against what this car was designed to do, and it would just become a 370z wannabe.
