This is how a show about cars should be. Forget glamour shots of ultra exotic cars with a million horsepower. Keep it simple, friendly and entertaining host in an obtainable drivers car, with a road to complement the car. This formula doesn't even require a huge budget. I want to see a coast to coast tour in a Miata, and in each state along the way, the host picks up a local and tours the best local driving roads.

Totally agree, I live in New Zealand and I've owned two MX5's. Got my first one aged 18, and my second one aged 25, both modified, and both amazing cars. Nothing like watching the frustrated faces of drivers in Big V8s as they can't shake you off their tail. Awesome cars.

I recently bought myself a 92 NA with a five speed. The first one with an auto that I had wasn't working for me. In three weeks time, I already feel like I've become a better driver. Rev matches are almost bang on. Working on heel-toeing still. Stop and go traffic isn't a problem for me with the five speed. I now understand why this car is so special. It's taught me more than any other car I've driven. I'm really happy these cars exist.

This is a good first car for these reasons: You'll learn how to drive a manual transmission. Because of the rear-wheel drive, you'll learn good basics of handling - braking and down-shifting. It will feel like what you thought driving a car would be like when you were 10 years old. This is a bad first car for these reasons: Despite the fact that its one of the best handling cars ever made, it's also one of the worst cars for adverse road conditions. The Miata will start hydroplaning at 40 mph and if there's snow, don't even think about it. I once did 2 360's at 60 mph on a rainy day down an interstate. At that point I was just a man in a barrel going over the falls. You won't be able to bring friends along or haul anything except ass.

Actually these cars do surprisingly well in rain, snow. That is after you take the stock tires off I had a lot of issues with the stock tire ( almost spun out on slick pavement) but after I switched them for 7.5"(stock is 7.0") toyos its fantastic. Never had any problems with hydroplaning or wheel spin in wet conditions. (so much more grip in the dry to)

Soon starting with modification cause there also easy to wrench on ....... Suspension, Cosworth internals, flying Miata supercharger and sticky tires ..... What a great review :) I love my '08 :) Quite a few friends are "converted" after a very quick drive. Beautiful scenery up there.... would love to have seen what you could do with a faster camera car. Can tell from the engine noise that you're nowhere near the limits :) Best thing about this car is how much control you still have when you're on those limits. And it's control, not computer coming to the rescue!! What do you use for sound? Exceptionally clear audio in your video. :)

I'm a pure miata lover by and by. I own a first generation 1990 (built in 1989) white miata with all original parts still running almost perfectly at 192,300 miles. However, in all seriousness and without bias, the s2000 is in whole other class. It is superior for sure, no question. My cousin owns an AP2 s2000, and i know first hand. But I still love my miata even though it isn't as fast, doesn't handle as well, and doesn't have as great engineering put into it. For the money, it cant be beat

Awesome video, I stumbled upon the Mk4 Jetta video just now... didn't know you guys changed names. That's funny about the miata though, I'm turning 16 this month, and an NA miata is one of my favorite cars. It may happen to be my first car, although it's likely that it'll be something a bit cheaper, like a Mk2 VW Jetta/Jolf or a first-gen MR-2. (Miatas seem to be a bit expensive here in MN, and I'm lazy so I don't make a lot of money :)). Great videos by the way, loved the Mk4 Jetta one!

Great review Matt. Glad to see someone else that pushes the Miata as a great first sports car. I am sick of people who think of the Miata as gay. This is a superlative car! Inspired by legends like the Porsche Spyder and patterned on the MGB this car is a historic mark in roadster history. The Miata is in many ways responsible for the revival of the classic light weight sports soft top. Guys should get in one and flog it for a while before they, in pure ignorance, judge the Miata as gay.

It's good to see you recommending the MX-5 to people as their first car. I think they are great cars. I was going to get 1 but I bought an RX-7 instead simply because the price difference here in Ireland was the same for the FD as the MX-5. However I want my g/f to get an MX-5 because I think it will make her a good driver and enjoy driving (she gets nervous in the car), but also cause I'd like to drive it from time to time for the fun factor.

If you've never driven a sporty Japanese 4-cylinder, you may think the Miata is revving too high in top gear on the hwy. But don't worry, it loves to rev, and the best power doesn't even begin to come on until 4000 rpm. It builds nicely from there up to redline, and does NOT "run out of steam" or "flatten out" (like your family sedan V-6). This translates into the best acceleration being above 80mph in top gear. Gearbox ratios are close, dropping only about 500rpm per shift, which is perfect.

Yes, for all the reasons that a rear wheel drive roadster makes more sense when it's sunny. Having said that, with good tires, the MX-5 would do fine in the northeast all year round, especially with the hard top.

When I was 16 I discovered this car for what it truly is, I bought one, and I want to buy 3 more. I use to think they were girly cars but I realized that was my ignorance. It REALLY is what they say it is, and a whole lot more, It isn't so much a car as it is a lifestyle. And heck for 4-5k you give off the impression to people that you are somewhat successful, if that means anything. But in all seriousness I absolutely love mine to death and I think it's one of the funnest cars you can buy.

  • @Smashinz2002
    @Smashinz200212 жыл бұрын

The best thing about these little cars, is that they not only handle like nothing else out there for the price, but they are also quick (especially at speeds over 80mph when the power begins to come on in top gear , thanks to the 4.11 axle ratio), but they also get extremely good gas mileage. The sticker says something like 28 hwy, or something. But trust me, you can easily get 32 on the hwy, and 29 to 30 in town, all the time, regardless of how you drive it. This car loves to rev!

I think i've seen that ghetto Miata down the street from me in West Haven, CT at some limo service place, could be wrong but the wing/homemade wind blocker look familiar. Also, Matt, now that you're out in L.A. is a Miata more plausible?

@Driftuner I'm pleased to hear how you prefer the Miata to the GT-R. I signed up for a program called World Class Driving, where I got to drive a Gallardo Superleggera, SLR McLaren, 599 GTB, R8 V10 and Continental Supersports. The most fun car I drove that weekend was my 95' Miata. The supercars were just too composed even at the 100+ mph speeds I was driving, and the flappy paddle gearboxes were jerky and uncomfortable.

Just got my miata. I'm 16 by the way. Drove it for a month. Went into my savings and turboed it. Torsen Diff. Roll Bar. Race Buckets. Removable Steering wheel. New Brakes. I've done everything i could and wasted almost all my $6000 i had for a car. Oh by the way, i only paid $1200 for a mint condition 95 miata that's black. I get so many comments like dude you're gay but when they ride in it their minds INSTANTLY change and they want one too!

I own a 2000 miata ls. and i would have to say. as he said, that it has made me a much better driver. and on top of everything else, having some awesome canyons within 20 mins. makes for some kick ass runs on the weekends with the top down. i'll def. buy another in the future, when this one dies.

The S2000's engine is easily the best NA 4-cylinder ever put into production. That said, the chassis was never able to put the power down. I track my 95' Miata with my local Miata Club, and I consistently post faster autox times than S2K owners. Even on the big track, the Miata's always make up time in the corners while S2K's fight oversteer. They're both great cars and I would definitely consider a used S2K as a daily driver (as well as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ).

@shobin05 The E39 M5 is a pretty bulletproof M-car. The S62B50 motor is a simple V8 that puts out a modest amount of horsepower, simple manual transmission (as opposed to unreliable SMG boxes), and what not. They can be unreliable, even a person I know has a 528i which breaks down a lot, but at the same time the E39 can be a reliable workhorse, even the M5. E46 M3 is a different story.

do you think the miata should look so firly, though? or should you just buy a hardtop, with like really really really dark tints? and do you like the "ricer" cars, homemade wings, wings on fwd cars, vtec as opposed to normal v8 power, and that kind of rice racing?
