2006 Jaguar XK Convertible Review - A British Future Classic?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I am looking at the first of the "new" Jaguar XKs - a 2006 car, and talking about why it represents excellent value, how I have become obsessed with the wrong things, and if this could become a future classic.

I bought an XK just like this one in May to see me through the pandemic having sold a DB9 in March. At £9500 It is almost unbelievably good value, doing almost everything the Aston did 95% of the time for less than a third of the price. It's so well built it feels almost new, the drivetrain and interior are as tight as a drum, it's just about fast enough for the south of England, cheap insurance, cheap servicing, and it still looks fresh and modern. There is simply no excuse for them being so cheap.

@@computerhelpcc Biggest two things I missed from the DB9 were the noise of the V12 and the fact the interior just felt more special. There is also the fact it was an Aston Martin, which matters because I am an unashamed badge snob. I sold the XK after a year, but I tend to do that with most of my cars. It was an excellent ownership experience though and I'm still very happy I bought it. I even sold it for slightly more than I paid!

I have a 2009 XKR Portfolio that I bought when it was 2 years old. It's been nothing but amazing. The only problems were a thermostat - which on mind failed open so there wasn't any issue with overheating. Replaced the battery once. Caution with the 2009 XKR Portfolio, the brakes are $4,000 and last about 40-45K miles. This model has Alcon brakes and they are the best brakes I've ever experienced, but really pricey. I'm keeping this car forever. I've never even been slightly tempted to replace it with an F-Type or any other car. My whole life I always wanted to switch cars after a few years, not with this car, she's a keeper. The body is aluminum, so park if far from anywhere where it might get a door ding. One of my favorite things about it besides the beauty and power (425hp / 419Lb torque) is how it is so fun to slide it a bit in corners. The traction control is just enough, but allows for fun. I have scared myself with it a few times.

Interesting how many car pundits are now singing the praises of the X150. When it was in production they 'bashed' it for: Not having the performance of the 911 Not having the build quality of the SL Not having the looks of the V8 Vantage Not having the cache of the Continental GT Not having the reliability of the SC430 (Lexus) Not having the handling of the Elise...etc. Those of us who actually bought the car and used it knew that whilst it had minor issues - it did everything very very well and has no 'real-world' shortcomings. It's the world's best GT, for reasonable money.

Today, it has 94,000 miles and with meticulous care, is still new-like inside and out. I will have it until I am a very old man and they take the keys away! Very reliable too! Very nice video, it gives a good insight in what driving an XK entails. I can say, from experience, that a normal aspirated V8 kind off suits the car and provides the smooth driving experience as shown in this video. I currently own an XKR and I have to say that the additional power adds to the attraction, but is not really necessary to be able to enjoy all the benefits of an XK. If you have a strong desire to race opponents at every traffic light or reaching 250 kph on the German autobahn I would certainly recommend the XKR. In any other case a 4.2 litre V8 would suffice. In addition to that, when smoothly driven, the fuel consumption of the 4.2i V8 is not even that bad, quite good actually. The fuel consumption of an XKR is much, much higher. In any case, the ride in an XK, whether it be a normal V8 or supercharged, always gives you that sensation that you are driving something special and is a true joy.

Other than the obvious extra power and minor styling tweaks, it differs in interior trim (nicer buttons etc), endlessly adjustable seats, and standard active suspension. I'm told the 5.0 cars are notably firmer, but it's still a refined cruiser. I only wish it was a manual; I use it in Sport/Manual all the time, even dawdling around town.

I like the rumble too, that X150 seems a little muted. Perhaps a convertible should be a little more stately. Thank you for correcting yourself on the engine front. As I understand it they were developing the V8 unit when Ford bought them. Ford looked at the engine, looked at what they had to offer from their stable and decided Jag should stick with what they were designing. The 4.0 had a few teething problems (like the tensioners, bore liners etc) as when developing any new engine, but my 4.2 seems bullet proof (touch wood, lots of wood in the cabin to touch!)

My dad used to own one of these (a coupé, though) for a few years. He bought it as a dealer demo car with a big reduction and it was a lovely car with a surprisingly loud exhaust for a stock car. The thing is: my dad's not a very good driver and the car scared him a few times in the wet, so he got a Discovery 4 next to it as a daily driver. That was the XK's nemesis: if you didn't drive it for 2 weeks, it would drain its 12V battery and all the electronics would go wonky. So he sold it after 2 years and I still miss that car. Even though it was not sporty or particularly roomy, but it just felt like a warm bath on a cold winter's day...

I was shopping for either an XK or F-type 2 years ago and ended up with the XK for exactly this reason, the F-type has followed the Germanic black on black on black and very solid route, its absolutely fine but it does nothing for me, the slight eccentric flair of the XK appealed much more

The XK is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and it will DEFINITELY be a future classic. I don't see that happening with XK8 because the styling was too much "90'S". This styling is absolutely timeless... just like Porsche 928 and BMW 8-series (save the pop-up headlights).

xk8 I see it way more of, the design on the xk8 is so simple and clean, the curve under the body and the timeless interior (aside from some of the switches) make it a car thats already appreciating, everyone on the road looks at it satisfyingly, just very nice to the eyes. the xk is a great car but I less prefer the big chunky plastic lights and how the bottom half of the car goes flat down like any other from the time. otherwise x150s are great cars and looking to find one soon.

I paid 17K USD for an 07 4.2 conv with 36K in excellent condition last year...8 months later I am still watching videos like this - and could not agree more about what people say about this car. I was kid during the 'muscle car" era. This car is as fast (or faster) than most of those. But if you own one you won't drive it that way - you'll cruise. You will marvel at how smooth it is...how precise the shifts are...how comfortable you are. It is an awesome car.

Hi James, love the channel. Tying to find a sensible review of an Audi S5 convertible, the 3.0 super charged car, 2010 onwards. I’ve never owned an Audi, Beemer man. But I’d like my 1st convertible, it won’t be a daily. I have a baby boy so needs 4 seats, but not necessarily full rears. I love the XK, but have noticed the previous S5 convertible is looking like a bit of a solid bargain? Happy for it to be more cruiser than sports car. Can you get one on the channel please?
