2005 Jaguar XKR (X100) Review - Is This Bargain Classic Jaguar Worth Buying?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I'm looking at the Jaguar XKR - a car born of the aging XJS platform, and used to give Jaguar something fresh at a time when their lineup was becoming stale.
Now available at bargain prices, is the XKR worth taking a risk on?

My dad has one of these he’s owned since new. One day he called me up and said ‘how would you like to have that car one day’. I said yes please, and he promptly went and spend 15k having the entire car restored to ‘as new’ so that it would last another 20-30 years and then he could leave it to me. What a total legend.

I bought this XKR 4.2 Supercharged Victory Edition from new in 2006 when I lived in Vegas. It has a carbon interior with SatNav instead of the wood & dials & is painted in Copper Black metallic paint. The wheels are 19 inch. I still own it. And in 14 years of ownership, the only thing that has failed are a headlight bulb, two dashboard lights and a front wheel ABS sensor. It's also rust free. It does 24mpg (US) which is about 29 mpg in the UK around towns and over 30 mpg cruising on the motorway. It really is a head turner. And super comfy for long distance cruising. 400HP is plenty for most crappy roads anyway. There are better cars dynamically of course but few sound like that supercharged engine when you floor it. I think your review is spot on - a really nice looker even if flawed. But then so is Angelina Jolie.

The cabin is a nice place to spend time in especially with the carbon fibre dash. But you have to stay on top of the maintenance (mechanical, underside and bodywork). Few cars look as good from so many angles.

I absolutely love my 98 Phoenix red XKR. It has this face lift and 20” Detroits. I still pinch myself after 5 years of ownership. Running costs not bad. Parts fairly reasonable and a “blast” to Cornwall from Oxfordshire averaged 23mpg (as per on board computer) or one tank of fuel. A lot of smile per mile. Worth every penny. Nice honest review btw.

It's a personal choice, as an owner, I'm very happy with the xkr, the gearbox is fine, the motor is incredible, much more power than most if us will ever need. the handling is more than adequate. I took my son on a road trip to italy last summer, it's one of the most beautiful and comfortable cars you can drive. Average 28mpg, best was 33mpg with the air con off. I just love it. Always wanted an iso grifo but, the xkr is equal to the best and, so affordable.

Having just bought a 1998 XKR I found the review very fair and accurate but a little harsh about comments on the gearbox. Had a 2002 Xkr convertible since 2013. Can not stress the rust issues enough if anyone goes to look at one. If you can see it on the arches or sills then it’s going to need a fair bit of work. Chains, tensioners and water pumps should of all been done on 4.0 engines by now, check receipts. Common myth that gearboxes are sealed for life, they are not and should have new fluid around 75k. The gearbox and engine are easily reset for shift points/drivability.Really nice cars and totally worth the effort, plus there’s a wealth of information available through very friendly forums.

I never drive it in the rain if possible and she's always garaged. It was a Jap import, with no rust underneath! I sadly may be forced to sell her due to my financial position, no money owing or anything like that, other crap like loss of employment - I don't want to sell her of course but if someone offered me a good enough offer I would more than likely give her up.

I have been waiting a long time for this review. I have the same car. They are faster and quicker then most people would think. It's best to drive the car relaxed though unless you like loosing your license. You can turn the traction control off entirely which I do only in the dry, you are asking for trouble if you turn it off in the wet. The interior is the perfect size for me though, my mechanic moans when he has to get into it which I always find very amusing. It's what a GT really is, perfect for long distance driving. Automatic gearbox isn't perfect but it's smooth, with the J gate you can modulate the power much easier. A manual gearbox would have been really nice. It's one of the best looking cars ever made.

@@sparky4878 Yea I have seen that video a few times. At the time Aston and Jaguar where in some sort of relationship and didn't want to hinder each others sales. You can buy a LSD for the XK8/R so it brings you a bit closer to the XKR-R. Small things like changing the exhaust will net you about 20hp for £500. An upper and lower smaller diameter supercahrger pulley will get you a little more power as well. Really the best way to make big power is to repalce the supercharger with a twin screw type. This will get you to around 500hp. I have seen a guy who is using a highly modified 4.4 AJV8 from a Range Rover putting out 650hp. Really I think the best value for money is to change the exhaust and fit the LSD. Everything else will just be a money sink.

Very nice review, Jay, of a very nice car. As regards prices going up, I am not sure this is going to happen anytime soon. Even the prices of the X100's predecessor, the XJS, haven't really gone up although it is much more of a true classic Jag than the X100. Also much fewer were built. It's a total mystery to me why the XJS (I'm talking about the pre-facelift model until 1991), which can be had as a V12 convertible, with its beautiful lines remains so underrated.

Great review! Covered the pros and cons without any bias - an honest review/assessment by someone who - by their own admission - has a soft-spot for this marque/model, but didn’t just blindly big them up or let their disappointments turn them against the car. I’m just worried now - a 4.2 XKR x100 is my dream motor, but I didn’t think height was an issue - I’m 6’0 and seeing how you look the driver’s seat made me anxious... 😳

To many KZread channels (Car Wow) are hung up on peak BHP / 0-100 times etc. Without giving an insight on day to day driving along normal, pot marked, damp British roads. An 800bhp M5 , weighing 2 tonnes, costing a fortune to run and own and only being able to use 20% of its potential on British roads . Pointless. Its nothing more than a cock and wealth measure.

Great review, James. Just a bit of advice for those wishing to purchase one of the fabulous machines. You mentioned the Nikasil issues with the 4 litre engines. However, the pre 2002 4 litres had plastic timing chain tensioners which need to be replaced with the post 2002 metal versions from the later 4.2 V8. It is imperative all owners consider this upgrade, because serious engine damage can result if the plastic ones break. There will be a coming together of pistons & valves. Budget £800-1000 for a specialist to carry out the work. Parts are 200-300 quid. Also consider if a pre 2002 car changing the water pump for an upgraded one with metal impeller, instead of plastic. Also upgrade the plastic thermostat housing for a metal version. All parts available aftermarket from specialists such as the aforementioned Tom Lenthall. Other Jag specialists are of course available :-)

Hi Arnold, you would need to purchase a 4.2 litre car to avoid any issues with the timing chain tensioners. They introduced the 4.2 in 2002. So yes, as long as it's a 4.2 you'll be ok. Thanks.
