2006 Ford Explorer 4.0 4.6 V6 Harmonic Balancer Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Helping a friend out, the belt originally came off. After further inspection the harmonic balancer had failed and needed to be replaced. Not uncommon with the 4L Fords. A good sign is the belt sequels and jumps around, along with the balancer looking chewed up. Thanks for watching!

    i found two things that helped a lot doing the pulley on my 4.0 mustang. the GM extension tool fit perfectly inside to push the pulley off with the puller. Second a fan clutch spanner tool fit in the balancer puller holes to hold it tight getting the center bolt off and torquing it back on. way easier than finding a way to get a belt on perfectly

    Great video. I thought my 4.0L 2007 Mustang with 118,000 miles would be similar, but it wasn't. So, in the spirit of helping others: O'Reilly does sell a balancer from Dayco that is perfect match. The crankshaft bolt is right hand threaded. The bolts in the universal puller from O'Reilly and Autozone are too short. You will need a couple M8x1.25x90 bolts. The center hole in the balancer is too small for the universal press installers. M12x1.5 threaded rod would be ideal to press the balancer on the cranksaft, but threaded rod that size is hard to find. I did find a M12x1.5x130mm bolt and with a small section of 1 in square iron was able to "connect" the 130mm bolt two a second bolt to fashion a press tool. I did install a new Ford bolt as recommended by Ford and torqued it as described in the video.

    I just did this this job ended up being a bit of a nightmare. The puller bolts were to short and needed 8mmx1.25x90mm or 100mm long. After installing the dorman harmonic balancer I started getting misfire codes P0300 P0303 p0304. I changed out the crank sensor and spark plugs. I ended up pulling the balancer back off and found that the pickup teeth for the sensor were bent on the new balancer. Make sure to check your new one before install. I just wanted to share this info for others.

    The Harmonic balancer in your video split in 2. The metal bottom was supposed to be at the top where the rubber was but it had separated. The only reason the rubber part had teeth is because someone installed the belt on it and ran it with the belt on the rubber.

    Mine split like this as well. The belt gradually crawled over the edge of the pulley as it drifted, and the belt just landed on the rubber part. The thing did it all by itself.

    I had the same problem with my 07 mustang v6 and what caused the noise was that the thermostat housing was leaking, Changed it and the noise went away. BUT i did notice that the harmonic balancer was wobbling a little bit. I ignored it and eventually my car cranked but did not start. The crankshaft position sensor sat next the harmonic balancer and was shredded because the balancer was so out of place and i cannot put the new sensor in. Im installing the balancer next week along with a new belt .

    I changed my harmonic balancer on my 2004 Ford Ranger 4.0 SOHC now it runs terrible and is throwing a code. I torqued the bolt as it should be and did everything right. It was a pain to get off but it went on with no problems. All I did was take the fan and rad out to get enough room for my puller and I got the part from NAPA for $140 and it looks the same as the one on here. Only thing I think it could be is if I didn't seat it all the way down onto the block because the press I have won't work on my truck. So all I did was run it down with the crank bolt.

    It happened on my 2007 explorer with 48000 kms only, one time when i was driving in the city around 30-50kph and suddenly felt something pop out and the belt start squealing and also felt a bit hard on my steering. I tried not to get panick and parked the car on the side of the road and turn off the engine. I went down from the car and inspected the engine, I saw that pulley already hanging on the lower radiator hose and almost fell on the ground. Luckily the car was still under warranty so I called Ford, they towed the car to their garage and repair it. Got my car back after a week.. and so far til now it is all good at 130000 kms.

    Not trying to troll your videow but none of the universal harmonic balancer tools from the local auto parts stores work. The removal bolts are to short and they look just like the one in this video so interested in seeing how he pulled this off. After rigging mine I finally got it off . FYI number 2 is none of the local harmanonic balancer installer tools work on newer explorers. After being down for 2 days I ended up tapping the new one in far enough to use the old crank shaft bolt to finish seating. I then used my new bolt to torque to specs as he did in this video. It was a risky move but was desperate at this point. Your using the serpentine belt to stop engine from turning worked great but started squealing a few days later. I ended up stretching it so bought a new one and she's purring now.

  • @billcoley8520
    @billcoley85204 жыл бұрын

    Boy boy I found a exact problem that my explorer is doing including that squealing. But wait a second. Your balancer has 2 set of groves for the belt to ride in. My Ford Explorer only has 1 set of groves for my belt to ride in. Why is that? I’m talking about the one on the truck your going to fix

    Same problem. The serpentine belt on my girlfriend's 2007 4.0 v6 mustang is sqeaking like hell when it starts. It kinds quiets down a little bit after she runs it but not completely. I changed the belt and it quieted down but it started up again. I was thinking of replacing the crankshaft pulley. I ruled out all the other rotating pulleys. What should I do? Oh belt spray doesn't help either. It's really loud. Fords suck! This is ford's way of making money after the sale.
