I was changing my harmonic balancer with the help of your video, when 2 of my male neighbors decided they wanted to help, great......lol. I told them numerous times about needing a longer bolt because they weren't reaching the actual crank shaft (2:16 - 3:00) but I guess because I'm a female they refused to listen, so I let them fight it for a good while, lol. Finally I told them nevermind, to please just leave it alone, and the next day I went out and pulled it by myself lol. Thank you so much for your video !

Tremendous idea with the old serpentine belt to hold the balancer from rotating! Thank u have been trying to find ways to tighten down the balancer in the car without special tools.

i used a 4" extension on a puller kit borrowed from Advance Auto. Tried multiple times but it would not come off. The plate was thicker than the Harbor Freight one that I was using. Tried a 6' extension and it came right off. The screw down bolt was hitting the back of the harmonic balancer when using the 4' extension. Also could not get the new harmonic balancer on by tapping with a soft hammer. Tried with 1x4 a piece of wood to get even pressure and tapping on the face but still would not go on enough to catch the new bolt... Went to hardware store and bought 4" bolt same thread( cant remember pitch and thread. It's on the web somewhere) as new bolt and was able to draw it in enough to get the new bolt started. This video was very helpful as to what had to be done. One other thing. I took off the fan shroud to get a little more room. A couple of bolts and 1 wire clip. Place heavy cardboard , or something to protect the radiator fins while working

My 4.0L Ford engine is in my truck (not on an engine stand). I don't have an impact wrench. When I go to loosen the crank bolt (using a breaker bar), will I be able to use the belt to keep the engine from rotating counterclockwise? Please advise. Many thanks!

what thread pitch bolt did you use? Don't have the same kit and I'm at a Toyota dealer so I don't have Ford's special tool... l don't think my kit has the correct bolts. Been driving myself crazy with this thing

I want to say it a 8mm fine thread, I'm not at home to check. It's a standard bolt in the Harbor Freight set- Pittsburgh Bolt-Type Wheel Puller set. Hope that helps. The bolt needs to be at least 3-1/2 inches long.

It would help me and boyfriend so much if we knew how long the two bolts for the Harmonic Balancer puller are in your video. We suspect our bolts are too short and the wrong thread. BTW I have a 2005 Ford Mustang 4.0 V-6.

Hey Nick, we got the balancer off successfully thanks to you appreciate that very much. Now we need to take the timing chain cover off. Do you have a video on how it's done? Or can you give us some tips on what parts we have to remove to get to it. Thanks

Just loosen the pulley bolt halfway out and then use the puller on top of the bolt head.

Yes this does work well, some pulleys are really stuck on. Therefore the video shows a different way to avoid destroying any threads on the crank.

So what I'm doing is gentle, that is a lite soft mallet. I'm just pushing the balancer so that the bolt catches a couple of threads. It would take crazy force to damage anything internal.

My stepdad purchased one of these and the motor went so he had a new one put in. He called me over the other day to do some work and I saw the crank pulley was put on backwards and the grooved belt was running on the smooth part of the crank pulley not the ribbed part. Currently in the process of removing it to flip it and install it properly. A little worried tho to see the carnage and how the mechanic managed to put the crank pulley on backwards

That's crazy! I've removed pulleys that have slipped off the damper and created new groves. They can be a pain to get off, hopefully in your case there is no damage to the crank snout or the bolt.

How could it be backwards? One piece on the 4.0 V8. Mine separated . The ribbed part separated from the pulley and moved back towards the engine leaving the smooth side in line with the other pulleys. Took me a while to figure out what happened.
