2004 Volvo XC90 Radiator Removal Replacement Repair
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Installing a new radiator on my 2004 Volvo XC90. It is not hard to do, just a ton of stuff to remove to actually get to the radiator. And yes, the radiator DOES come out through the bottom of the vehicle.
Look in your owner's manual for the proper coolant type and quantity needed for your system. Mine was 2 gallons (50/50 mix coolant to water), with HOAT compatible coolant. I went with one gallon OEM Volvo coolant, nice pretty blue color and one gallon distilled water :)

Wife wanted one of these.... been a constant replacement of parts and now this. What a PITA car to work on. So much stuff to undo and most of the fittings, bolts and such are darn near impossible to see or access.
FYI: The radiator, cooling fans, etc should be taken out the bottom all still assembled. Then change out (disassemble/re-assemble on the floor of your work area. Then raised back in as a single assembly.
Thanks for all the detail and audio, I have the exact same car. I am a single mom of lots of kids and been learning how to fix things, but this car is one pain In the butt!
Nice, but painful job. Sorry to hear that you might trade it in. I'm a member of the Volvo club of Italy, and I always recommend your video's of this model to our members, they are a real helping hand in DIY. Keep up the good work and thanks. Carlo ...
Nice repair... looked like a lot of fun LoL
Hey bud! Absolutely, the Dakota is sitting in the drive way, patiently waiting for its turn on the repair list :) My plans, are to show a series of repairs (engine rebuild, body paint, interior repair, rear end swap...) on the Dakota. Hopefully by this spring, I can start! Thanks for watching and for the question!
YEESSS!!! I'm looking forward to it! Really Helps!
Unfortunately I have had to do this on my 98 s70. just got a 05 s60 and not too happy to learn they kept this design of sandwiching all 3 together and bottom removal only. I had a buddy help me and it's not easy holding all 3 up from underneath while having someone screw it in. It really was a strenuous job. No kidding, every muscle in my body ached...and I mean every. Taking it to the shop this time.
Good video thanks. I am in the process of changing the radiator on my 2004 V70 SE T. That too has all three radiators sandwiched together. Radiator, condenser and intercooler. A nightmare job I'm thinking. Volvo have a lot to answer for with this design. It's no secret how it happened. I hit a fox at about 75 mph. Felt bad for the fox. I really did.
LOL, amen to that!! There is nothing like the despair and stress that comes with getting out of you car and smelling that!
nice footage thanks boss
Really love your videos cos it has saved me tons of repair cost. its about a year now since I bought my Volvo (2004 xc90) and its current mileage is 164,000. I have done all regular maintenance except for timing belt. How do I know when its time to change the timing belt, the vehicle works fine with no error message/codes but am unable to determine from the previous owner when last the timing belt was changed.
Thanks Carlo! Yea, the radiator was harder than expected. Not to worry, I plan on keeping the XC90, it's an AWESOME car, just sometimes likes to make me work hard :) Thank you for watching and commenting and I am glad the videos help! Take care!
like Chrisbar00 do you have anymore info on removing the radiator its self.... We have a 2004 S60 R... The fan did not kick on and it got hot as in smoke.... The mechanic had been at my home fixing something else and by the time I drove to the ATM to pay him this accrued.....
Do you have any more details on the removing of the radiator? How did you take the shield below the radiator? I got 4 bolts out, but the right side does not want to come forward and out.
Can you tell me where the plug is for draining the coolant
you should do the next one in the morning
I consider myself a DIY guy mechanically and I am considering a Volvo XC90 possibly a 05 or 06 but I want to know what I'm getting myself into. The car is going to be used around town transporting kids. Do you have any bewares we should know about for DIY people ? I'm confident I could tackle the basic stuff but I draw the line at transmission work... knowing what you know would you recommend the XC90?
How do I know that I'm putting OEM brand radiator in my 2003 volvo xc 90?
What da name of the hose that crosses by the middle of the radiator
You didn't show any of the work to remove the radiator. What was the point of this video ?????
Hi but can u take the top portion of the radiator support off
Do you still have the Dakota?
HELP. 2004 XC70 Front impact sensors. * Please tell me the location. * This car is making an ass out of me. Want to test to see if it latches closed or resets to open after a dash airbag went off. Sending out SRS Module to get reset. Doesn't seem to have wiring to detect if airbag is bad or impact sensor is bad. NOt positive though. But where the hell are they located? I have bumper and grill off and removed front right headlight. Following all cables, cannot find impact sensor. Wonder what color the connector is. HELP
scary...thanks...:)
God I hate radiator leaks, you always smell that sweet smell for the longest time, When they replace my fuel pump on my bike they had to pull the radiator, there is a purge screw and a little sat on the engine for the longest time and when I smelt it it was always paranoia.
What's "HOAT Compatible"?? t.y.
its easyer to pull bumper bar off and pull from the top

lets ur easier video of pulling the bumper bar
crank the car if you want to find it fast.
volvo xc70 is the same as this removes from the bottom, its like pulling teeth. Dam, this has to be one of the most ball busting radiators i've replaced, im in the middle of it right now. i would rather pull a motor. Engineers at volvo must have went out of there way to make it as complicated as possible. What were they think hanging the intercooler, ac condenser onto the radiator and all the load is on the side of plastic end tanks stupid F#CKERS! good luck to anyone tackling this you will need it.

8 years later I'm doing the same one you are. Volvo can suck it lmfao.
If it has the bleeder hose going from the reservoir to the timing belt cover,be very careful not to break the pure crap plastic nipple off the thermostat housing...Volvo won't sell the nipple and you have to buy the whole assembly....$150 and a pain in the ass to replace.....plastic should have never been used on a cooling system...
Useless video without info or the actual radiator removal footage....shame.
poor video quality and the explanation could be revised.
Useless video! Whole point to see how to undue these green clips and you cut EXACTLY that part out
