Thanks for this video, I just swapped an nv4500 into my 98 dodge and was having a hard time shifting into 1,2 & R after the trans got warmed up. I pulled it out again today and cleaned a little rust off of the input shaft and it shifts nice and smooth now.

Thank you so much for the detailed and thorough explanation. My truck needed a new clutch so took it to a local reputable shop. When I got it back it had a vibration and notchy shifting, hard reverse and was very disappointed. Took it back to the shop they took it back apart and changed to a different brand throughout bearing... still had the vibration and notchy shifting. So I decided to open ER up myself to see what's going on....... Right away I found dirty, rusty spline and they had the trans in a bind by using the bolts to draw the trans together.... So frustrating that the pros damaged the belhousing and did such a poor job on the install. My only question is to make sure I am ok to use a little #2 hi temp wheel bearing grease one the spline. I preformed the install exactly how you did cleaned all rust with emry cloth and screw driver. South bend says leave the spline dry ... They contened even the smallest amount of grease on the spline is a no no. They say grease will work its way to the disk and case slipage or hard spots ... they also said the grease also attracts dust and clutch friction material over time compounding the problem of a clean spline. So the tought was leave dry and the hint of surfice rust is less problematic than the grease slinging on to the disk and the dust packing up on the spline... Is there any truth or should I do as you showed?

@@perfectionclutch thank you Gary again for such a detailed video and your willingness to share your knowledge. I trust your input and is why I asked the question. There was two companies the local shop and South bend clutch manufacturers. They have nothing to do with each other. The local shop is who did the install poorly. South bend clutch manufacturer is who I got the pressure plate, disk and flywheel from... South bend is who had me scared about spline grease... but I know you have real world knowlage of many many clutches installed. Just wanted to do it right when I did the job. Again thank you very much. I took my time to put it all together clean and propperly alligned... I loved the tip of using the Hager bolts ... Thank you have a great day

Just for laughs - "I got tired just watching this video". You're one heck of a mechanic sir., I have been through 3 clutches in my Dakota., I don't ride the clutch or slam gears. I have had a few questionable repairs by local mechanics, one reputable shop said they found 15 nuts, bolts & washers when doing repairs. I would like to have it done right just once though as I don't have the patience, ability or facility to do the repair myself. Mechanically speaking the 4.7 L engine is about the best motor I've ever had, I keep clean oil and other fluids clean and lube the K&N air filter etc. The motor has never given me any problems but now the shifting has gotten stiff again and I smell another clutch job soon. I love this vehicle and hate the idea of getting rid of it because everything but the clutch and related parts have been great. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks very much for your expertise - God Bless.

Gary, awesome video! Clear instructions, good lighting and quality. Q: Had a new Valair put in last year. Before and after I've always heard loud chatter when idling and clutch engaged(pedal released) or shifting into 5th or 6th and engaging clutch(releasing pedal) noise stops when i step on the clutch pedal. From all I've read, could this be the input shaft or the bearing? I noticed you mentioned alignment issues causing input shaft failure... hmmm? I should just call you. :(

Just put a new clutch kit in my 2002 3500 5.9 NV5600. 10 spline, 1 3/8 output shaft. 4 1/2 hours. $530 for the kit. Easy peasy, except for that damn transmission crossmember. I had to beat it out with a large hammer, and spread the frame to re-install. After that, its all pretty much self explanatory. My root issue was that one of the springs from the clutch plate itself let go and lodged in between it and the pressure plate, not allowing the clutch assembly (release bearing) to physically disengage the clutch from the flywheel. I initially thought that the release bearing seized, but that wasn't the case.

Excellent video. I have a 2005 dodge 2500 4x4 with the Cummins engine, it has 230000 miles on the original clutch and it is showing signs such as slipping and sometimes putting into gear. I have on hand a Valiar kit clutch and new fork. My grandson will be installing it he has a transmission jack, and lift to raise it up. Trying to get all my ducks in a row I notice that you used bolts with heads off to hold both the flywheel and presure plate in place for both removal and installation what size bolts were used for your pins. Again excellent video. Dick V.

Started making a noise as if a bolt came loose and was jingling in the housing...pulled the transmission and while very sooty inside, can't visually see much. My wife was driving it. Said she was at a stop sign, couldn't get it out of gear and had to shut it off. Was able to get it out of gear and started. I showed up and noticed it was making a sound like the jingling. I backed it up and parked it in the driveway. I did notice release bearing is completely dry, but rotates freely. I suspect this but have concerns about the input shaft. To me it looks like a bushing or maybe a wear sleeve?

Got an NV5600 in a 2002 3500. Fairly high miles, about 500K. It makes noise in all gears except 6th gear. Any thoughts? It has only had the clutch done, no other major service to the trans except fluid changes. Shifts good, no grinding or hard shifts so synchros are probably good. What is the life of these transmissions before needing a complete rebuild? What could be making all gears noisy except 6th? Im thinking bad bearing but its fine in 6th so I'm starting to think that that is not a valid conclusion unless it is only one bearing that doesn't have as much load applied in 6th.

We have a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 with a 5.9L diesel we are replacing the fly wheel and torque converter. Everything fits but the new aftermarket torque converter is about 1/8" thicker than the factory converter, and has made the installation a bit more difficult. The factory torque converter bolts broke off, so thats why we had to replace this. I was wondering is this normal on torque converter upgrades? And if so what tips do you have to make this installation complete. My dad stated that if the Torque converter is binding or too close to the pump it will damage it. He is the one who is installing for me. Any help from someone who has encountered this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Oh yeah one more thing the truck has an automatic transmission.

Took it apart, bearing disentegrated, balls on the bell housing floor, like 3 pressure plate fingers completely broken out, clutch disk was like new and the bearing was greased. I have a 2005 Ram 2500 with a NV56 . My clutch is the South Bend duel whatever they told me . When I bought it no noise when pressing clutch . Then after 6 months or so now sounds like dry bearings in the throw out bearing . Mechanic replaced it and showed me the old bearing and I see they are not a sealed bearing with grease . He put a new just like the old one where one side is open to the bearings . Looks like no grease and still makes the grinding dry bearing noise . After spending $1,800 for this and still the same loud noise I was and still am PISSED , I've changed throwout bearings before in my 4 speed cars over the years and every one were sealed and greased bearings . Do they make a sealed throw out bearing for the 2005 Dodge Ram NM56 and the South Bend Duel clutch ? Everytime i pull up to a red light people look and some yell i need a new throwout bearing . HELP ME !!!

I have the same transmission but in a 01 2500 4X4 176000 miles. The truck was driving and shifting fine then all the sudden it was very hard to get in gear. Once in gear it drove fine no slipping or chattering. I made it home but now when the clutch peddle is pressed it will not go into any gear. It went from shifting good to not being able to shift in a matter of 30 minutes. Before this there was no grinding or any tell tell signs of a bad clutch once in a while it would be hard to go into reverse. Is this the clutch or is it a hydraulic issue? Hydraulic fluid levels are good. Any help would be appreciated.

  • @eav8r

    9 жыл бұрын

***** Gary, thanks for the reply. I bought the truck with about 30,000 miles on it. I don't know if the clutch was replace before that, but I have not replaced it. I was an excavator before a career change, and in that time I put about 100,000 miles of hard towing on it. The clutch feels good, and the shifts are smooth and easy, but I have noticed from time to time after running at freeway speeds when I take the exit ramp and shift in to neutral the RPMs will oscillate from idle to idle plus about 300 RPMs. When this happens there are about 2-3 cycles in the oscillation before it settles back to normal idle RPM. Is this an indication of the clutch on its way out? Or is there something else going on? Thanks again for your help and quick reply. Eric

Why wouldn't you replace the rear main seal ? 240,000 miles and all you have to do is remove the bell housing and there it is ! I seen no indication that you intend to replace the RMS . So ,now if the RMS starts leaking the owner is going to pay someone probably atleast a $1,000 to fix the leak !

Surprised at same. When I sold/advised, we insisted on replacing rear main, regardless if leaking. You're already there w flywheel off - seemed odd he didn't replace

Something weird happened today I was driving on a street too much traffic suddenly the gear box start making a lot of noise like something was breaking inside I stopped the truck I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 diesel truck I could not move it for the noise I opened the hood and check the level of the clutch container as soon I opened the fluid start coming out... I start making some calls (towing truck) a person showed up and told me he was a "Mechanic" what was wrong with it!! I explained and he said try to move it I did but nothing happened for one block he was following me with his motorcycle but nothing happened so he said that probably was the clutch and it could be a serious amount of money since I have to replaced clutch, disc, and steer wheel part and he said probably the gear box needs to be check out but it was almost a 100% sure that it was the clutch breaking apart ... I was able to finish what I was doing and I got home so I start looking for answers...the truck is 200 000 miles, I got it when it was 35 000 and so far I have not replaced the clutch. I am just trying to get some answers I do not know how to fix it so I have to take it to a mechanic shop can you give some advice, Thank you.

A 'steer wheel' is what you hold on to when setting in the driver's seat. There is NOT one between the transmission & engine. Not even inside the transmission. Throw-out (release) bearing, pilot bushing, clutch disk, pressure plate and 'flywheel'

What are your thoughts of driving the truck without using the clutch after you leave a stopped position?

Hmmm and the driver didn’t notice anything funky to warrant pulling truck from service? That kind of finger destroying wear doesn’t happen in a day. Would likely have been horrible noise and/or pedal feeling for a while. Classic example of mechanical ignorance or an employee not giving a shit

He already described that it was a work truck in the beginning. You have no clue because your truck sits in your driveway. Correct?
