this is why your machine takes off when you start it and put it in gear with out giving it gas.

Neighbor: Hey Bill, the Flux Capacitor went out on my ATV. Do you know where I can get a good deal on one? Bill, don't even trip, I have like 16 spares stacked on a shelf in my garage. Give me a beer and I'll just give you one.

Man thank you for the video! Bought a cheap Kawasaki 360 this weekend. Had "carb issues" so it wouldn't start. After I got the carb sorted out, it started fine, but would roll forward while trying to crank it, and if you cranked in neutral it starts right up, but dies when you pop it into gear. I was wondering how bad the seller jammed me up. I normally stick to messing with old Hondas, so I have a pretty steep learning curve on the CVT stuff. I will go in and check for a stuck/broken clutch. Thanks again!

@@smallmiraclesgarage622 actually I do, never been a mechanic in my life came across this 2001 Polaris 400 a month ago that needs a lot of work and I decided it's never too late to learn a new trick. I've been educating myself with the help of people like you and lots of reading and watching I have done some things I'm proud of and I have messed some things up, I had to take my clutch cover off to replace the starter I saw other people doing it wo but it just wouldn't come out in fact it wouldn't come out after the front cover came off so I decided to try and get the back cover off, big mistake yes. After reassembling fortunately the new starter and solenoid work perfectly but I messed my clutch up, it won't stop turning when I put it in gear it won't grab and go right away I have to really rev it up yes I have a new belt on it and I cleaned up the clutches with a Scotch-Brite. But something is wrong

Talking to my guy that works on my four-wheeler. There is a belt that is smooth that does not have your engine braking system on it. You can get that belt it's a little bigger I think he told me so you do not have to replace the clutch

You have to replace the clutch when its bad like the one in this video. Rust and corrosion had it partially engaged, thats bad on your engine, tranny and face when you hit a tree when it decides to engage even more and get stuck lol

I'm looking into getting a primary clutch for this sportsman 400 I just got im just wondering what you suggest for a cheaper reputable place to buy one im hesitant about the Amazon one and I don't want to pay 500 for a new one from the parts store

OEM otherwise you will just be replacing them over and over along with belts. find a good used one with good buttons. good parts aint cheap and cheap parts (from china) aint good. a good used one is about $75-$100

I have a 2006 Polaris hawkeye that starts and revs but won’t move. I can’t feel it shift into gear either even tho the shift linkage looks fine. The belt is also fine. Any ideas?

What if it takes a while to move when you accelerate it . I noticed yours wanted to move as soon as you gave a little throttle but mine takes a little while to move could it be a bad clutch? Any ideas have the same four wheeler as you

Hard to answer that so I'm going ask alot of questions...Is your battery charged? They need a good battery to run. Does motor idle good? Can you rev it up in park or neutral?

Is it efi or carborated? Can you start it in neutral? Does the foot brake light up the brake light when you step on it? When you shift it does it seem to lunge forward ?

Idles n runs just fine in neutral battery is charged and it’s able to rev up we just changed the primary clutch then it jus lunges forward and shuts off

@Small miracles garage no not a new clutch. So possible rod bearing? Darn... I know that they are a weird press design. Any recommendations on service/prevention? Is there a way to replace the bearing without specialized tools? I'm familiar with engines and wrenching so... Also I do thank you for any and all info provided.

Also I notice that on cold start the noise is not there and shows after it warms up. I picked the 4 wheeler up free not running (carb issue and bad rear cv axles) and haven't done an oil change on it yet (money issue lol) oil is full though. Not sure on previous service history.
