2000 Lincoln Town Car Fuel Pump Replacement 1 17 2024

A different explanation than most, the video begins with picking up the 2000 Lincoln Town Car on a day preceding snowfall in Eastern Tennessee (ok, all over the east coast).
Why? The car would not start after sitting 5 months. Would crank easily but would not fire that eliminates the coil packs "but" could be one of 5 things:
1) Fuel Pump Fuse
2) Fuel Pump Relay
3) Fuel filter (under the car, Passenger side for a 2000 Lincoln Town Car
4) Safety shut-off switch (in trunk of the car, drivers side for a L.T.C.)
5) Proximity sensor switch on the transmission
6) When all else fails? Fuel Pump replacement ieieieieieieiee
7) Don't forget chaffing wires sooo difficult to see
On to the the 2000 Lincoln.
Short explanation?
1) Fuel pump replacement? Delphi Technologies HP10092
2) Sources: Amazon, Autozone, NAPA, etc (comparison).
3) Tools used? 8, 13 and 15 mm ratchet box end wrenches, 15 mm deep socket with 2 long extensions to reach gas tank nuts; 2 standard screwdrivers; wire cutters; trouble light/flashlight; container for loose nuts, bolts, tools; long stiff wire for disconnect of a sensor wire; 5/16 and 3/8 fuel line disconnect tool
I also replaced (3) exhaust pipe "insulators" (rubber shock item supporting the tail pipe and muffler) as dry rot was evident and since the car was in the air to work on.
Cost of Replacement Parts?
1) Pump = $207.56 (after 9.25% sales tax)
2) (3) Exhaust Pipe Hanger Insulators = $13.24 (9.25% sales tax included)
3) Gas covering to/from @ $2.50/gal (average) = $35.33
4) Total: $256.13
5) Labor? Ha! What price to pay for towing, lying on the ground with below 20° for more than 4 hours? Priceless!

Longer explanation - You mean there's more?
Tucked inside a garage with little room to work on, tools to use were 2 hours away. Due to time & limited part availability, it made sense to haul the car to my home.
The owner was willing to pay someone to (1) tow the car and (2) rely on the "honesty" of a dealership or shop to do the work. If a diagnosis of any vehicle means a fuel pump replacement, a consumer can pay upwards of $750 to $1200 for a pump. Add labor charges (figure 4 hours) and you may have $1500 to $2000 in replacing a pump.
For "something" to do (yah, right) I suggested a 3rd time that I do the work for her and this time it was accepted.
Charging up the battery for the carrier mounted Warn Winch, I loaded both to the truck back end. Once at the destination, I had to disconnect the trailer and installed the winch to the truck and then pulled the car out of the garage stall vs rolling by hand due to the pitch of the land.
The trailer was reattached to the truck and the winch installed on the trailer at which time it was pulled on to the trailer.
One mistake was "not" laying a 2x6 or 2x8x 16 ft long on the drivers side to allow opening the car door easily for access to the ignition and putting the car in neutral.
Although the fenders are removable on the trailer, the low slung look of the car, like many, has to be accommodated for. 30 minutes later the car was in park, emergency brake on, cables attached front/rear and ready to return home.

Not as complete as other video's breaking down disconnect of the fuel lines, the following may assist your effort whether dropping the gas tank or not:
1) If leaving "on" a trailer, use your parking brake and leave a chain, winch cable or tie down straps attached for safety
2) If going to work under the vehicle, if "raising" the height, use a jack stand or blocks to prevent it dislodging and falling on yours truly!
3) While under the vehicle, do a visual of other things you could replace after completion of the fuel pump replacement. For example, exhaust hanger insulators that are the rubber shock items that stretch/tear in time.
4) Improvise/utilize items on hand in your DIY project.
5) Shop around (on line or locally) for a better price on parts (Fuel Pump) if performing your own swap.
6) REMOVALof the PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE does give more clearance to reach/disconnect the wire sensor plug from the matting connector on the top of the gas tank.
To sum up? Never said/claimed I could write just one sentence!
