    I JUST did mine, on my 2001 Lincoln Town car last night. AT night, with 1 rechargeable stick light, in a parking lot, with only the rear passenger side of the car jacked up on the ground! NOT using a lift and it can be done! I did NOT drop the exhaust. HARDEST thing is taking that 1 electric connection apart, which IS accessible up under the rear passenger side wheel well. After looking at the new plug, seeing how the tab works, as you CANT see that on the one on the car as its only an inch or so clearance, i saw that you could use an ICE PIC or something similar, to stick up on the top "hole" on the side of that plug, keeping the top of the ice pick on TOP of the plug, once you come in from that hole on the SIDE of the plug, to press DOWN on that tab, like a lever mechanism and that plug pulled RIGHT OFF.. So there is NO NEED to CUT WIRES!!!!! I then, reached up ontop of the tank in the front, to pull that other plug down and got that apart with no problem. Took the fuel lines off. got the pump out, but having to turn it sideways and working it up and above the differential. You just have to "mess" with it, and it WILL come out. Then put it all back. I did this laying ON THE GROUND, with just a car jack! I need to make my own video ;) No cutting wires, no car upon a lift, no dropping exhaust! and I am NOT a mechanic!

    Yes you can reach the connector on top of the tank but it is a big pain in the ass in my opinion so I cut the wires and put in another plug to make it easier. My point to the video was showing you don't have to take the tank out to change the fuel pump. And as you said you don't need a lift to do it either. It's just I happen to have one so I use it.

    good tips- the one below from Billy Crouch sounds good too- one note: seeing the trouble light hanging there gave me chills- a buddy at work almost died, lost his car and garage along with months in a burn ward changing a fuel pump- he simply dropped his trouble light and the bulb broke... PLEASE use a sealed LED worklamp, and never flip the switch under the car- also a cheap fan blowing across the floor will keep the heavier than air fumes from creating a explosive mix... in winter time/low humidity, a cheap spray bottle of water spritzed on the floor where you're working can prevent static discharges too. most folks probably realize the hazard, but honestly, I never really thought about it till Mikes accident.

    My biggest problem was the plug over top the pump on my 2001, I finally found that there was a plastic hold not letting me pull the top connection out so I could disconnect, and used a "prybar to make room to slip out. Thank you to everyone that contributed to this thread. You all were a God send to me

    As stated in another comment you don't have to cut anything to replace this fuel pump. Connector can be reached from passenger wheel well. I used a long screw driver to unplug it and pushing it back together. This is a simple change and do not have to move exhaust to replace fuel pump.

  • @JohnDoesGarage

    @JohnDoesGarage

    Yes, you can use a screwdriver to disconnect it, but the wires that are connected to the pump are clipped to the top seam of the tank, making it difficult to get it out and reconnect the clip to keep the wires secure. Not to mention plugging the new one in using a screwdriver is difficult at best. I believe in working smarter, not harder. Adding a plug as I did was, to me, much easier and will make changing the pump that much easier next time. I don't have an ego problem where I have to be able to say I reconnected a hard-to-reach connector. Also, I don't know about any of the cars like this you have done, but the exhaust has been in my way on every one of them. I don't usually disconnect it at the converters, but it made it a lot easier. Pulling it aside with a ratchet strap has always been sufficient on the ones I have done.

    I am in the process of changing the fuel pump out of my 2000 Grand Marquis. Saw both of your video's. Both well done. I decided still to go with these Delphi type connectors. Purchased a 5 pack of 4 pin no name brand connectors for $12.99. Going to put one on the 3 wire harness and 4 wire harness. Reason why although I saw on your later Mercury Marquis video how the 2nd harness disconnects above the frame it wouldn't fit between the tank and frame to come out so I cut both harnesses 3-wire and 4-wire. Doing this job on my lift at 66 years old. I am glad I put it in while in my 40's during the early 90's. It was the perfect addition to my 42'x60' Pole Barn. Thanks again for the video. Just changed out a fuel pump in my 2000 E-150 Ford Van a little over a year ago. Wasn't about to drop that tank either. Ending up cutting the floor right above it with a air body saw in a 3 sided square and then peeling it up and over. Access was great and didn't have to deal with trying to drop a 30 gallon tank that I don't believe I could of done by myself.

    Nice having a lift isn't it. Makes doing this plug adaptation really easy. Most will only have a set of ramps and a driveway. Likelihood of a pump failing again is about 5% since most in first pumps in these make it to over 130k. You can however using a but connector splitter to redo a but connection without shortening the wire. Good to see it done on a lift.

  • @JohnDoesGarage

    You don't have to remove it but you'll have to figure out some way to move it a few inches towards the passenger side. The exhaust is rubber mounted so it will move enough so you can get the fuel pump assembly out. A ratcheting cargo strap would work to pull it out of the way.

    Ok awesome, thanks. One more thing... as luck would have it, the fuel pump died with the tank full to the brim so I need to drain some fuel out, but I believe these have an anti siphon device in the filler neck. What is my best bet to get some fuel out before starting this job? Thanks!

  • @JohnDoesGarage

    They do seem to Crap out right after you fill them. Since you can't use a siphon hose I'd get a large pan to put under the tank. Then loosen the fuel pump assembly enough to let the gas run out and run down the tank. You'll lose some but that's what I would do.

    Hey, I am having problems with the plug that is above that crossmember. Not the one you cut, the other one that I need to unplug. I got the pump module loose but cannot get the plug loose above the crossmember. This is the main plug that part of it looks like it goes into the trunk. The plug is above the cross member and on top of some hard fuel lines. It feels like the plug may have a clip on it into the crossmember. Since it is up there blind, I can't undo it to give me the slack needed to get the pump module out. Did you have this issue. It seemed like it would just be easy to dc that harness everthing I read, but mine seems latched in above the cross member and out of sight

  • @JohnDoesGarage

    @JohnDoesGarage

    7 жыл бұрын

    That connector is hard to get at and you cannot see what you're doing. There is a latch on it that you have to press in order to get it to release. I do believe it is attached to the frame with a plastic connector. If I'm not mistaken I think I pulled that out of the frame so I could reach the latch tab on the connector. Once you press on the latch to release it the connector should come apart fairly easily.

    John.. I encountered the same problem, but mine is worse thus the pump wiring harness was routed behind and under that metal bar rail where the brake lines is attached from underneath it and the chassis frame and there is a gap of less than 3/4" not enough to slide under side to side and along that bar rail for pulling out the Fuel Pump wiring harness "7-Pin CONNECTOR" and thus pull out the fuel pump entire module from underneath the car and work on it in a work bench, unless I also cut the other 4 cables going to the pump motor + the 3 cables as shown in your video. Any suggestion is appreciated.

  • @lesgarten

    @lesgarten

    7 жыл бұрын

    I just did mine. Had a hell of a problem with the connector that is trapped by the crossmember. But don't give up, you don't have to cut it. One half of that connector, the part that goes towards the trunk is pinned into the top of that crossmember. amongst those fuel lines. You have to pry it out of there. I got some long needlenose, screwdrivers, etc and worked it out. It's one of those securing connectors for looms and plugs that just snaps into a square hole in the crossmember. I just felt everything till i figured out the best place to apply a little pressure. The fuel lines are a bit in the way so take your time and work it out of there. Once the plug is loose you can slide it towards the passenger side of the car along that crossmeber and you'll find one spot where it will slip through. If you have cut the other portion you are now home free, it will come out. I used a weatherpack connector to repair the cut portion of the harness. Which is a PITA in the dark with almost 60 year old eyes that started out life bad. But it can be done if one is patient. Hope this helps.

    Hey John. I am having the same problems reported by Les Garten on my 97 Towncar. Even after spraying W-40, I am unable to detach the upper 3/8" fuel line using the 3/8" tool from the pump, so I am stuck. I tried jiggle and even rotating both ways, the line is loose but does not release and I am afraid to damage it if severe force is applied to make it worse. Although I succeeded easily separating the lower 5/16" line with the 5/16" tool. I will like to remove the fuel pump like you did without dropping the fuel tank because it is a pain in the neck. And I STILL have 1/2 full tank (10+ gals). Also my engine stalled and I have "crank no start" condition. Fuses OK, but no fuel pressure on the rail at all. Sprayed 4-5 shots fuel into the Throttle body just after the MAF sensor and the engine fired. Pump Relay is not clicking. I jumped terminal 30 & 87 still pump will not run. I suspect is a bad fuel pump, but will like to run a test and The pump plug above the crossmember is unreachable to see IF + voltage to pump is reaching before condemning it. Any hints?. Can you Pse advise

    Sometimes if you push the fuel line as far onto the pump as it will go then push the separation tool in as far as it can go then try pulling the line off. Sometimes the tabs are up against the ridge on the line from the pump and they won't release. When you push the line on as far as it will go then the tabs can't get caught on anything. Give that a try.

    Thanks for the tip Joe, Yesterday I did and tried that on both lines, but only the 5/16" line detached. I let myself cool down and will try again today.. I am using the plastic detaching tools, so if I cant dislodge it, then I buy & use a metal more rigid tool, presume will not deform and thus get it under those tabs?..

  • @JohnDoesGarage

    I'm sure you noticed in the video I used the plastic ones and had no problem. I also have the metal ones but the plastic set seems to work better from my experience. I found out if you turn the fuel line back and forth while pushing the tool into the line it works better. The apparatus inside the fuel line is actually a spring and you have to make sure the tool is under it completely or it won't clear the ridge on the metal line from the pump.

    +Les Garten the metal connectors are crimped on, not soldered. I provided a link to the crimping tool as well as the connector itself. The yellow handled tool pictured with the crimping tool is used for removing the metal connectors from the plastic plug if you should ever have the need to do so. The metal terminal ends come loose in the package and snap into place after you've crimped them on the wire. It comes with an instruction sheet.

    Slick: Yeah, thats right Slick, they screw you at the shop because reputable shops dont install $40.00 EBay fuel pumps that will fail within 6 months, I have seen it happen dozens of times because customers want to save money and think there is no need to buy the Motorcraft fuel pump module. The shops also screw you by charging for labor because they will not cut the wires, they will repair the car properly, they will be cleaning out the tank since its dirt that usually ruins the pump in the first place, and shops are not in business to earn a living, they are simply community service providers where all work is free of charge. Idiot!!! Slick, Ace, Champ, or simply "I make dickhead comments" are all great names for someone as intelligent as you.

    OK.. Joe on my 97 Towncar the tank is mounted vertically the same way as your Mercury , only thing my car has rear air suspension and in lewd of coil springs, has nasty air bags. Today I tried again to dislodge the 3/8" fuel line from the fuel pump but again, I was unable to disconnected it. I ordered the fuel tank strap studs and nuts from a local Ford dealer in case I drop the tank, but that would be done once the fuel line is detached. I saw your plastic disconnect set. I have something similar. As I mentioned, I disconnected the 5/16" fuel line very easy, not so with the 3/8". I guess something inside the hose or tab is deformed and is still biting. or my plastic tool is not wide enough to push away the 4 metal tabs inside of the hose end?. So,. I will buy and try again using a more rigid metal detaching tool with a handle so I can pray it a little while rotating it and see if that dislodge the hose tabs from the tube ridge?. Any suggestions is appreciated. Thus I would hate to cut the fuel pump tube as a last recourse...bad, bad.

    06 crown victoria have the tank like this? I'm trying to prepare for if mine goes out. great videos. I just replaced my intake like you did in your other video. my original intake had the aluminum cooler port in front but still started leaking around it. I caught it early and saw your video and decided to give it a try. I also cut my mounting bracket for the cables lol that bolt in the back was a biotch

    You don't have to cut anything. Disconnecting the connector from the top of the tank it's easy by using coolant hose tool or any tool with L shape to push and unlock the connector then pull on wires in same time. 5 sec. job

    One of the plugs wont fit between the Body and tank. You can't remove it. You have to cut and reroute the new one. Also sucks to do on a rusty POS with rust flakes going on you.

    I have a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis and i think my fuel pump went a little over 2 years ago, the car has been sitting ever since. I wouldn't even dare attempt trying to change the fuel pump, hopefully someday ill have the money to bring the car to the garage or the dealer.

    My problem was the tank itself, my customer drilled holes in the tank to mount an audio amp, and didn't realize why his car smelled like gas, until I told him that lump inside the trunk is his gas tank. So I took the tank down and used the proper studs.

    I cut the 3 wires since I wasn't replacing the entire assembly and it was ez pezy, that damn plug didn't want to come lose, I could have been finished instead of wrestling with that plug. And since I was just putting in the pump and not the entire assembly, best decision I made was just cut the wires...my car, my choice. Get you 3 butt connectors and reconnect the 3 wires..Done!

    It can be done, but without lowing the tank you can't get the clip that holds the wires away from the exhaust in the right place. There are usually several different ways to do a job, this is how I do this one.

    It's so nice to hear people of today use "F" bombs while speaking to everyone assuming it will be well received. I would spend my time getting right with Jesus who will cleanup your mouth, your life and save your soul. Or, you can keep on doing things your way and in the end wish you never did. What good does it do for a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul.
