20 Watts VS 100 Watts. What Guitar Amp SHOULD YOU Buy?

20 watts or 100 watts? How loud does your guitar amp need to be and what amp should you buy? Well, it all boils down to the amount of clean headroom you need from your guitar amp. 20 watts will be perfect for some, and 100 watts will be perfect for others. So how do we find out? You just have to ask yourselves a few questions to figure out if a 20 watt guitar amp will work for you. Or if you need a 100 watt monster!!

    It was pretty helpful to me, I'm looking at a kustom hv65 which is a hybrid that has tubes in the preamp and transistors in the power section but idk if it'll be OK, I had a champion with a hundred watts and it was amazing but I just don't know if 65w are enough taking in count it has tubes

    Hey Niels. Glad the video was helpful. 65 watts is “generally” more than enough (unless you’re in a SUPER loud band) The Kustom being a hybrid will only make a little bit of difference. All-tube amps only sound louder than a solid state amp of the same wattage because of all the extra harmonics the tubes add. With the amp only having a tube preamp section, you’ll loose a bit of that perceived loudness. If you’re concerned then I’d see if you can rent the amp for a few days and try it out. That’s about the only way you’ll know for sure if the Kustom will work out for you.

    it's Good you brought up the non linear aspect. eg.. double the loudness takes 10 times the power the inverse is also true, but you left out speakers, 10 times the speakers also doubles the loudness, or a combination of watts and speakers . Plus speakers themselves can vary in loudness plus distance has huge effect.

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    @EverythingMusicRecording

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, and also the impedance and efficiency of the speakers as well. And the biggest being the overall sound. But the reason I didn’t bring up speakers is because no one is going to add enough speakers to their rig to make much of a difference in volume. And I can’t think of a single guitar amp that can power more than two speaker cabs anyway. Most people are going to have a combo amp, some might have an extension cab paired with it. Some will have a half stack, and very few (like myself) will have a full stack. And that’s it. So it just didn’t seem like there was much point in talking about it. Now if we were going back to the days when PA’s were terrible and guitarist HAD to have 4 Marshall heads and 8 cabs, well now that changes everything lol 😁

    I thought the same thing when I was younger as well. We don’t know what we don’t know until we know it. And my 20 watt Marshall Origin head can rattle my house just as well as my 100 watt DSL head. Kinda makes me wanna get my hands on an old 200 watt Marshall just to compare 🤔

    @Crash.7434 oh geez. I’d gather it’s a different between the efficiency of the amps. Could be gain structure as well. That’s the thing with amps, especially with different brands, they will all work differently.

    I would also like to add that a 100 watt amp can push a bigger pressure wave than the smaller amps, can utilize and power more speakers as well as being more efficient in the peaks and valleys and overall definition of the amplifiers tone, which is why I prefer my Marshall 2555x Silver Jubilee on 100 watt mode even at lower volumes! I practically never use its 50 watt mode, cuz the definition is better at 100 watts. Pressure wave plus decibels equals what we perceive as Volume to our human ears, volume isn't just an audio term, it generally describes how much something can hold, and you can fill more space up with more pressure wave (more speakers or higher wattage speakers=bigger pressure wave) which the 100 watt amp gives you. Keep in mind your average headphones can put out 120dbs, but that doesn't sound like a rock show from 3 feet away from the headphones, that's where the extra watts powering the Pressure wave comes in. Other things like mains voltage, speaker efficiency as well as speaker cable efficiency also play a big role in the final decibel output of your amp in the real world. A 100watt amps perceived loudness is much greater in the real world than what the math tells you since it doesn't take into account the variables and also since decibel level is just peak loudness, it says nothing of how much of that 130db of Marshall power is being pumped into the room.

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    @EverythingMusicRecording

    2 жыл бұрын

    You have some valid points. I do have a counter point though. A small amp can power just as many speakers as a large amp. A 5 watt amp can easily power 2 4x12 cabs just fine, so long as the Ohm rating of the two cabs is a load the amp head can handle. A 100 watt head will of course push more and those speakers are gonna move more air, but a 5 watt amp can still do it so long as the ohm rating isn't lower than the head can handle. But thats a whole different can of worms lol. If your Silver Jubilee sounds different in 50w vs 100w mode then it might be switching from Pentode and triode mode. My DSL100H uses that type of switching and there is a pretty big difference in tone. My Marshall Origin has a different system to switch between the 3 power modes and there is far less difference between them. You're right though. In the "real world" a lot of different factors can and will have an affect on the actual, or perceived output of an amp. I think where it can get tricky for people is figuring out what they actually need in an amp, which will be different for everyone. That and there are so many different guitar amps on the market to try and pick from, which can be a blessing and a curse lol

    These days im pretty much just playing and recording at home but i still wouldnt give up my Marshall DSL100HR (100 watt EL34 amp with a 50 watt setting) for anything. I even modded it by adding a Hammond 194G 3H Choke which is on a switch on top of the chassis inside the amp next to the PT so i can switch from the choke to the stock resistor. Im pretty much always on the choke setting cause its beefier/fuller which makes perfect sense. But it can be cool to switch to the resistor every now and then for a lighter feel which has more sag characteristics when you really push the amp. I was worried there wouldnt be enough of a difference to make adding the choke worth it but luckily is a very apparent difference with these amps. I highly recommend doing that mod if anyone owns a DSL100H/DSl100HR/DSL40C/DSL40CR. I also added a switch to add back in the ultra gain channel bright cap they removed from the HR versions since so many people modded their 100H/40H and the JCM 2000 DSL's by removing it altogether. But i found that removing that cap completely makes the Ultra Gain channel too warm. But the stock value in the older amps was 470 pF which sometimes is really great for that classic Marshall lead tone but if youre using the Ultra Gain channels OD1/OD2 for rhythm playing then it cuts too much low end so i found the perfect compromise is a 100 pF cap. So i added an on on on switch to select 470 pF/brightest, 100 pF/just right for rhythm or no cap/warmest. You could also do a similar mod with the clean channel and i tried it for awhile but ultimately decided that while i did like having a warmer and brighter Classic Channel switch it wasnt worth drilling another hole into the face plate. Anyways my point was just to say i wouldnt give up my 100 watt amp for anything because I love all that clean headroom. Its the perfect pedal platform because i can dial in a great clean tone that isnt to thin or too dirty at high volumes. But lower wattage amps are still great and a ton of fun to play, i just prefer a higher wattage amp if i could only have one. I also build guitars, amps and pedals and if i ever have a tube go out and i have to wait for a new quad or if im just in the mood to play a solid state amp i can play one of my solid state builds like my TDA2003 (car radio amplifier chip) amp. The TDA2003 is actually what HOTONE uses in their nano legacy amps for the power amp lol. Its just a car radio power amplifier. Anyways, i ramble A LOT. No shame so good luck mocking me for writing a book. It is what it is lol.

    I find a 100W HiWatt suits all possible needs. Turned down so the sound is around the 80dB range it still sounds good. Way better than some tiny little 5W combo. And obviously it can drive all the way to 120dB if you ever need it to. Obviously you'd want a bit of distance ( and maybe a bomb shelter) between yourself and the speakers at that point but it is always better to have and not need than to need and not have.

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    "it is always better to have and not need than to need and not have." I agree with most of what you said. I'd rather have a 100w head and a 4x12 and stick a power attenuator in the mix for more control of the amp depending on the venue. BUT if for some reason I was in a little 3 piece jazz trio then a half stack would be overkill and I would just use a nice combo amp. But i do agree that having more power and not needing it is better than needing it and not having it. =)

    Yea for sure, 40-50 is a good spot for many. For others it will be too much, and others not enough. It all just depends on the situation/venue/musical style. If you could bring Charlie Watts back from the dead I'm sure 15-20 watts would be more than enough. If you have Dave Grohl hammering away behind you though, your DSL is probably gonna being pushing towards that 100 watts REAL fast lol. How has your Bugera been? very clear explanation, many thanks! Just wonder if plug a volume pedal (or something like JHS black little box) in the amp's loop, will that work as an attenuator as well?

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    @EverythingMusicRecording

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not in the same way no. You could drive the preamp that way, but attenuating in the loop will just lower the signal going to the power tubes. So they won't be driven at all. Which if you don't need/want power tube distortion then that will work just fine. But if you want the power tubes cooking as well then you need a proper attenuator in between the amp head and speaker cab.

  • @castleanthrax1833

    Think of the JHS LBAB as the volume control on your guitar. That's all it does. I'm not saying it isn't useful, but it works totally differently from an attenuator. The JHS goes in the effects loop of your amp, and is just another volume knob, in the same way as the level control on an effects pedal is, or as I said before, the vol knob on your guitar.

Do you think that would help my issue? it's for a Metallica tribute that plays pretty loud and unmiced at rehearsal but we use pro sound live. I use the amp distortion too. Not a pedal

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    @EverythingMusicRecording

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Al. The Orange is a very cool amp. I was pedal shopping a few months ago and that’s what I was plugged into. It comes down to the design of the amp (and the type of tubes as well) If you compare the 15w orange vs a 15 watt fender, they will both be very different animals and behave very differently even though they are both 15w tube amps. As for the Boogies, it’s tough to say. You’d have to rent or borrow one and put it through its paces to know for sure. If it was me though I’d stick with a 100w head and use an attenuator in between the head and the cab. I’d likely not use the attenuator at rehearsal (would depend though) and then pull it out for shows. That way you can dial in the amp just how you want it and then dial the volume going to your cab back so the sound guy doesn’t rip your face off. So yea, see if you can take one of the boogies for a spin and if it works, great. If not, then a 100w head with an attenuator will be your best bet 🙂

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    MIC THE CAB!!!! Lol I had too!! I had no idea the Katana has an output control. Not sure why a solid state amp would need one but I’m sure BOSS put it there for a reason. Yes speaker sensitivity will play a big part as well. The right speaker(s) and that could add another few dB or more without even changing the amp. Your Tweed might be able to easily compete with the Katana in 100w mode. It would depend on the design of each of the amps, speaker sensitivity, and so on. Also the Tweed would have an added boost because of the tubes. Tube amps aren’t louder than a solid state at the same wattage, but the extra harmonic distortion from the tubes makes them sound louder. The katana will stay cleaner much longer tho for sure. I’d give it a go tho. Bring both amps out to practice and see. Would be fun for sure 🙂

    Well you're not crazy, as stated earlier more watts is more efficiency in volume getting to where it needs to go. Decibel level is only 1 aspect of what we humans perceive as "volume level", more wattage can power more powerful speakers that can fill the room with more "volume". As I always say, read the tech info on your headphones 120db is the average, now compare that 120db to what a decent tube amp puts out...quite a difference eh? That's because more watts equals more pressure.

    Oh nice!!! And I’m sure “way too loud” is an understatement since even in low output mode that thing is still cranking out 30 watts. Yes, 100% you should grab an attenuator. Unless you have a 5w or lower tube amp, an attenuator is pretty well a must for most situations.

    Hey Saul. Solid State and tube amps are different beasts so some of the video doesn't apply. Being in a metal band though I'd go for a 100 watts. I gigged with a 120w solid state Laney head with 2 4x12 cabs back in the day (I couldn't afford the Marshalls I wanted at the time) and I never had an issue with volume (and my old band got a bit of a reputation for being VERY loud) When you go amp shopping bring a guitar and some, or all of your pedals. Distortion pedals as an example can sound great with one amp and not so good with another amp. If you're gonna use the front of the amp (preamp section) again make sure you are liking what you hear out of it. Ask about the stores return policy as well. What works and sounds good in a guitar store doesn't always work in the real world. Hope that helped. If you have any more questions just let me know =)

    I'm wondering if all amps are rated the same way. Are they rated at peak or RMS. I've been wondering if its worth buying a tube amp over my digital. Mainly playing at home but I do like my metal and punk rock.

  • @EverythingMusicRecording

    @EverythingMusicRecording

    Hey Steve. How they are rated should be the same. How each manufacturer labels their amps though is up to them. Cabinets and speakers always have their power handling labeled in either peak, RMS, or both. Heads on the other hand, both of my Marshall heads list the power outputs RMS rating, yet neither of my Ampeg heads have peak or RMS labeled. Just X watts at X Ohms. So you may have to check the manual for a given amp if it’s not listed near the speaker jacks on the head. Now whether it’s worth it to buy a tube amp to replace your digital amp, that ones up to you. If you find a tube amp that you like a lot better than your current amp and it will better suit metal and punk, then 100% I’d look into a tube amp. What kind of punk/metal tones are you going for?

    As far as I've seen, amps are rated at RMS. These days, PA speakers are typically rated at peak (thanks, marketing dept.) and a general rule is to cut it in half for RMS.

    What if you're a home basement player, but you just enjoy the low end girth of a 50w or 100w amp? I understand the headroom point, but isn't there a noticeable difference between say a 20w EL84 amp and a 100w EL34 amp in terms of that low end thump? Don't big bottle amps just sound "bigger" even when they're played at the same low volume of smaller bottle low watt amps? Is that a good enough reason to get a high wattage amp for basement playing, or is it just still overkill and at that volume you're not going to experience a large amps low end differences?

    I will take a head and 4x12 cab any day of the week. The only time I would use a small combo amp would be if I just wanted to sit on the back porch and play, or jam with a friend when drums aren’t involved. As for your question, the speaker cab is the biggest factor. If you had a single 8 inch speaker cab (let’s assume it can handle over 100w) and you connect a 100w Marshall head to it, it will never roar the same as plugging that same head into a 4x12 cab. The more speakers, and the bigger they are will simple move more air. A 12 inch speaker will also naturally handle more low end (generally speaking) then a 8 or 10 inch speaker will. It also doesn’t matter if I have my 20 or 100w Marshall plugged into my 4x12. They both shake the whole house. Now the Origin doesn’t have the same thump as my DSL but that’s just because those amp heads have very different voicing. But my origin through my 4x12 will still rip your head off if you turn it up and you can feel the air moving. I do also have an attenuator in between my head and cab though. They are always a great investment when you own tube amps. That way you can still crank up a tube head and get it into it’s sweet spot but dial back how much of that power makes it to the speaker cab. I think I covered everything you asked lol. If I missed something just let me know 🙂

    @@EverythingMusicRecording Thanks for answering my questions, everything you said makes sense. I currently have a 20W Friedman JJ Jr. and a 100W Orange Rockerverb, both running through a 2x12, both attenuated. What I've found is, in terms of volume, there's really not much difference. The Friedman does sound like a big amp, and has a tight low end, but I do notice a difference in terms of the girths of the Friedman, which runs on 2 EL84s, when compared to the 100W Rockerverb with 4 EL34s... It's subtle, but noticeable to me. I love them both equally, and they are voiced different enough to justify both. I would love to get a 4x12 one day.

Stairs on the other hand… lol Yea could be the extra couple tubes or just the way their voiced. The Marshall Origin has that old school “oh crap the bass knob is rather useless” thing going on but my DSL has more low end then I could ever need. But they both move a ton of air when turned up 🙂

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s always tricky to answer. Even the auditorium part. How big is the auditorium? Does the amp have to do all the work or will it be mic’ed up and run through a PA system? I guess the easiest answer would be that if you had your amp at rehearsal with a full band and nothing (other than a singer) had a mic in front of it and your amp is loud enough for that then you’re probably fine. But how many watts that is would depend on the musical style and how loud your bands plays. Someone in a jazz trio will have very different needs than someone in a death metal band.

    Hey Bo. Pretty much yea. The amount of power you need in an amp depends on the situations you plan to use it in. Someone playing guitar in a jazz trio will have VERY different amp needs then someone in a death metal band. Your drummer, for instance, and how loud they play (since most drummers don't come with a volume knob lol) will be another factor. And also the type of venues you play. If you're playing in a bar or club with no PA or sound guy, vs playing venues with full PA's and a sound guy. All very different scenarios.

    Absolutely 100%. I’m honestly surprised at the rise of small combo amps and low watt amp heads. I’m mean home or studio they make perfect sense. And I’m sure a lot of band situations as well. And a lot of people will talk about “well everything is run thru a PA now” In what world is that the case for bands just getting started? How many small bars and clubs have a full PA system with a sound guy around to run everything? It can be very hit and miss. So I think guys/girls just starting out will need a louder amp (generally speaking) but once they are always playing venues with a good PA then a loud rig would likely not be needed. Lol but yea if Animal is your drummer…

    @@EverythingMusicRecording Nah, it really comes down to which amp you have. I play a Mesa Boogie Mark V25 combo, a Rectoverb 25, and also have a V35 head and Friedman JJ Jr 20. Those amps, especially the Mesa's, sound way, way bigger than their wattage suggests. I've never been able to crank any of them, let alone go past noon on the volume. Now if you're playing a Boss Katana or a solid state amp, you may need to crank them. But I think the amps I mentioned above which also come with DI outs are the perfect compromise, and more and more are showing up on the market now. If the venue has a good PA, you can have both a real amp and cabinet for a monitor, plus your sound through the PA. But using a 50 - 100 watt amp and head, especially starting out, is bad advice IMO. They will suck to carry, and you may not even be able to crank them. The older, and even newer Marshall amps don't always have DI outs for example, so you may be stuck if you have one.
