Why would anyone dislike this video. Phillip goes out of his way to take the guess work in buying an amp for everyone. Who does that? Phil you're a class act, this was a huge video for me as I wondered this myself. I have yet to buy an amp for my Home Studio but now the picture has become clear. Off to watch part 2.

"Phillip goes out of his way to take the guess work in buying an amp for everyone." Well, anyone who wants a very raunchy alt rock kind of sound anyway.
I was thinking "Why are these old dudes playing these songs?" then I realised, I'm an old dude too...
@necronorris

Yeah. The old "oh we are old now" realization.
For rock and distorted tones, most 20 watt tube amps are capable of drowning out a drummer, but for strictly clean playing, it just may not be loud enough for a full band. Just my experience.

+Lothar ThirtyFour This is one of the big questions. We are going to do a clean shout out. If you have some suggestions of ones you think may or may not make it. Let me know. I have a rough idea of some of the ones I am going to use. But input is welcome. Thank you for watching and posting.
@lothar34

No suggestions really, I love the channel. I just wanted to point that out about clean tones, because I see so many people ask the question in various forums and someone will answer with something like "oh yeah- 10 watts will keep up w/ a drummer no problem". But the first guy didn't specify what style he plays and the 2nd guy didn't ask. Everyone just assumes rock/metal, but a clean country or jazz guy probably isn't going to be able to turn 10-20 watts up loud enough (while remaining clean) to be heard in a mix.

well it depends of the class of the amp, quality, speakers,et.c a lot of bands use a fender deluxe reverb....

Oscar Bird Music If you need to keep it clean, it won't help. The power amplifier in the amp and the efficiency of the speaker system are the limiting factors when dealing with clean tones. Boosting the signal in the effects loop will only get you into distortion at a lower preamp setting.
After all these years.., I still come back and watch this video. It is a great learning tool!
What a great idea for a comparison video. Keep 'em coming Phil!
Very insightful. I've been playing a 20 watts Engl Ironball head and an Engl 2x12 cab for two years now. I never even have the master half way up on stage. In rehearsals, I usually have to back it down to about 9 o'clock and it still cuts through like a charm. I'm playing mostly heavy rock, by the way. So the drummers I'm playing with hit hard.
One of the best amp comparisons I've ever seen on youtube...and I watch a lot of them! Hearing the amps played in a live performance setting, and hearing the band's opinion helps a lot.
Great collection of 90's cover songs!!! :)
You know this was a legit comparison I loved this I haven't seen anything like the before. Completely amazing! Phillip.. you hit it head on with this idea AWESOME and thank you!
Great comparison video man. short, sweet and you can hear the difference. Well done..
This is this the best comparison video I have seen !! Thank you Phillip , great idea to use a band to compare . Keep them coming !!!
Really useful. Thanks Philip and the band. Please keep 'em coming.
I always see comments Like " it works for club gigs but you might want something larger for out door gigs" why ? no ones ever heard of monitors ! most national acts don't even have live amps on stage- I've opened for lots of them. Been playing a long time and have done many large outdoor shows. Have never needed more than a small combo amp.

That is why I giggle about this. In reality, you should just hire a good sound man and utilize the mic and floor monitors.

I have a one hundred watt with a single 12 combo amp that blows the doors off any venue I've ever taken it to, I really don't need anything else.
First time I've seen a test this relevant! Thank you
In 1983 I went on the road with a 100 watt Half Stack. We had a sound tech that told me, "That's too loud. If you turn it down I can get you in the mains."Turn down? Nah, but I'm accomodating guy, so I set up a 35 watt Vibrolux. "Too loud."So I borrowed a 25 watt Carvin combo. "Still too loud."By now I was getting frustrated and as an attempt at malicious compliance, put the mic on a 15 watt Squier practice amp. "Perfect!"It was a revelation. I bought a 15 watt Marshall Studio 15 and have played it before huge audiences. By the way, that sound tech now mixes FOH for Blake Shelton.

Yeah I use a 15 watt Traynor Dark Horse head through the Traynor can with a 12" Greenback in it, & it's perfect for both jamming & live play. I use pedals for gain as well, only clean from the amp. Quite loud enough :-)

Philipp Berry just made me feel better bout My peavey 15 watt.. not a tube amp though just vypyr 15:( love it though won’t be gigging anytime soon But wondered how it would measure up.. just wish it had a 10 or 12 instead of an 8 inch speaker

Could you imagine sound guys telling Townsend or Hendrix to turn down? You know what you get with 15W through a PA? Stale boring sound not controlled by you. I play my amp as much as my guitar and for that you needs watts not a PA.
@omarflores323

Yup!!!! I ended up just not carrying an amp. Just a good pedal board with a DI box. It just run thru monitors. Fuck it!

@@hino-ucanada4506 PAs weren't even a thing that handled guitars at the time Townshend and Hendrix played, so of course they needed all those 100w heads and 4x12 stacks so they'd still be heard clearly and with a pretty clean signal across hundreds of meters from the huge venues and festivals they were playing. By today's needs and standards, that's fairly obsolete and pedantic. You'd also sound more stale and boring with a 100w head up to 1-2 on the master volume than a cranked 15/20w small valve head

This series has been really valuable! Thanks so much for doing this. Been wanting to trade my 60 watt for a newer 15 I liked the sound of better.
Loved it keep them coming please!
Awesome vid Philip.......can't wait to hear a blues junior vid, seeing I own one and curious to see how it projects live......
Loved the video , but it really wasn't clear which amps you were using other than the Marshal. May some text on screen? Which amp was the winner?
Brilliant idea for a video!
Hey i really loved the video good job dude. This actually helps me out a lot because i have a blackstar HT20 and it just doesnt cut it at practices (no PA) and hearing it from an outside perspective really helps me see that its not just me, it is the amp.
Cool idea man, thanks for bring it up!
that was the best way to sample the amps.. great idea. i have gone through a lot of these comparison videos and the y usually leave me more confused, not this time. cheers
The fact they played Smashing Pumpkins was amazing
I love all the 90s songs they played
what a great video. The band was great
This is one of the coolest gear reviews I've ever seen. Talk about going the distance by showing an amp's performance in a band context. Props to the guys for coming in and doing this for everyone's benefit. I would have picked the Peavey personally, but to each their own.
Love the concept. I'd like to see another installment with a few different selections. An Orange Micro Terror would definitely top the list.
Wow, great idea for a video. Glad you could pull it off.
We need more reviews like that! Great job
Thank you for producing this great video! I love it‼️😎🔥🎸. My Fender Super Champ x2 is being delivered today. Hope it can deliver the noise I crave‼️
That's a nice video Sweet selection of songs too Didn't expect to hear Breed there lol Love it
These are the kind of shootouts that count because they inform of a real scenario, fair play! Very impressed with how the peavey classic jumped out
A great way to experience what these different amps will do in a real world setting. Thanks!
That was a sick video! Cool of you to add some local talent into it !
the more I watch Phil McKnight the more I like him.. informative and entertaining. I would have liked to see the mustang V thrown in the mix.

Damon Rothermel My lead player uses a mustang amp 4 I think, it is a solid state I'm sure. I got a customized crate flexwave w angled 4x12s, put 2 British speakers and 2 regular celestions also made it so it can split channels and play 2 12s on either side so I can totally change the amp side to side or all 4 12s at a time. Thanks to my instrument tech, if I lost that guy my life would suck lol.

I have the mustang V. v1 it would be overkill but also have superchamp Xd dialed in at basic levels it will roar clean just gotta tweak with looper playing while standing as far back as you can . Although mustang V could double as a pa for drums and keyboards because of stereo input and stereo speaker output
Very cool test dude !
Thanks Phil this is one of the best informative videos for tryout amps for guitar playing in a band situation that's great showing the clean and the overdrive channel 👍 please do more if u can yer the only one thanks
FYI, if you have pop up blocker or using phone, or tablet you will not see the information about each amp.

It's not really pop up blocker Phil. Has to do with the browser person is using. Trying, using Internet explorer post your videos on twitter then try watching. It doesn't support playback. Sometimes it's the cookies and also Flash player.

I upgraded my Blackstar HT20 combo with a Celestion Neo Creamback speaker - now sounds incredible. Cuts through with ease. Rounded tone amazing crunch. DONT give up on the HT20, best small amp I've used for rehearsal and gig by far (with the simple upgrade)
Great idea! Loved this video (And vid #2). Recommend you add Jet City (JCA 20/22), Orange Tiny/Dark Terror, and maybe a VHT or Vox low wattage amp to the lineup if you do this again.
KZread audio is highly compressed so not a great forum for a shootout BUT you made the best of it by an excellent mode of comparison giving wide ranged perspectives. Good Job.
Here’s the issue. When the guitar takes off by itself, the sound is clear. But,when the drums kick in, you can here the compression on video camera take over. The sound volume drops and turns very muddy. It probably didn’t do that live, but it did on the recording.
Great video idea! Great way to do a shootout!
Great songs you guys are playing! Good ideas for gigs!
Awesome comparison, man. I've been looking at a 25w Supro Black Magick and this eased my concern a bit. That Marshall 2061 though!!! Unbelievable!!! Great job! :)
Well done! Thank you to Tattooed Step-Sister and to McKnight Guitar Co. For the video. Next....the high gain version! 😎
Great Demo
"Is your PA loud enough?" Great concept. Would like to hear the same tune with different amps to get better comparison. Great video!
That was Awesome.... Great Idea with the amps.
this was incredibly helpful.
Phil, just now seeing this vid... Great job, as it really pointed out the sound differences...
I have a 5 watt Champ 600 that I chopped. I use it to drive a 4x12 cab. Works great and gets loud enough for any indoor jam. I'm not 100% if the headroom would be a problem, but it's worked pretty well back when I used it.
Thank you very much! It really helped me a lot! My doubt was if I could purchase a marshall 40C (1x12" combo) to use in small gig (50 to 100 peaple maximum) or rehearsals. And now I know that the answer is yes. If with a 20W amp you can get that louder, imagine with a 40W marshall. Thank you again my friend!
Great video! I learned a lot.
I love small amps! This is a Cool Vid.
Man, great idea for a video Phillip...picking up a Fender SS22 this week...totally confident it'll have enough output for my band.
Great video and they played DAMMIT WOOOO
great video! I was in Mesa/Gilbert/Phoenix last month and I just found out that's where your shop is located. I could of stop in! lol maybe next time with some notice of course.
Plowed surprised me. Awesome man!!!! Takes me back.......
really gotta say I love this video. there are alot of very good lower wattage combos and heads out there that are awesome sounding and versatile. personally I use a H&K tubemeister 36w anniversary head and it's associated combo amp love them both. I usually play live with the both set at 18watts with the 36 watts available if I need it.. and Phil love that garth brooks world tour t-shirt
I have used an Orange Micro Terror and a MusicMan HD 150 on low power to play live with a band. We always mic'd it anyways. I was always able to hear my amps on stage. They were even run through the monitors. I used 1x12 cabs, I play in stereo. I sometimes used an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum and the Orange Micro Terror. They were fine as well. Now, I run through a stereo pair of Orange Micro Terrors with either my stereo 4 x12 or pair of 1x12 cabs. It is plenty loud. I even have the volumes of the overdrive section of my pedal board attenuated with a volume box. I do not really have to crank the amps to hard to get plenty of volume. The Orange Micro Terrors are no joke.
Great vid Phillip
Nice to hear those guys. I grew up listening to all that music, lol. I used to play some of those covers too but mostly just my original stuff nowadays :-)
Great vidéo , we can listen all the difference on stage, thank for the idea and for sharing; ) J-pascal
love the use of captions
Cool setlist!!
How cool! I live in your area, I didn’t know that. Used to work at Blue Adobe on country club and main and lived not far from there. 🤙
I like the Mesa! Great video man!!
I've been following your channel for several years and I wish you did more of these
That was great, i have a JCM 600 i use with a celestion cream back speaker in it and it cuts though decent and is loud enough for a hard hitting drummer, although it dosent seem to cut through as good as the marshall you tested. Thanks for the demo's here i was looking at the Peavey and wondered how it would stack up,I've had all incarnations of the Classic series amps all previously made in the US.
I had the same "Idea", was going to create a channel to test gear in actual band situations ... guess I don't need to do that anymore! Thanks Phill great video, looking forward to more!
For rehearsals with my band, I use a ZT Lunchbox amp with a compact custom 112 cab. Very small, portable, lightweight rig...and plenty of clean headroom. The amp's distortion doesn't have much gain to it, so I use pedals.
hey Phil, this is a great video series. This is how amps should be reviewed and demoed, i.e., in a band context as well. Can you PLEASE do a series just like this except with modeling amps!!
Good video and a real demo. Respect , Phillip.
Great video!Thanks
Great video. Curious how the smaller friedman's would have done. I've been using a DS mini and the other guitar player is using a PT-20, and they both get crazy loud. The 2061 sounded great!
Which is the best lunchbox tube amp head available right now? I play clean stuff mostly but I also get into some heavier rock tones (for home use)
Another good video, thanks
What about two small 15combos like a Tweed Blues Junior and a Laney Cub 12r? If you add another amp does it get "louder" with more headroom or just "bigger" with the same breakup threshold?
Are all amps cranked in the video? I'm thinking of buying a Marshall DSL20CR for gigging and studio recording, will it be loud enough for playing with a loud drummer?
In 1981, I bought a Music Man 100 RD amp. Tiny little thing. 100 watss, one 12" EV 12 L speaker. Weighs a TON. It's the ONLY amp I've had since. Through all the gigs in Chicago playing covers, to my original band in Austin, Texas. For 36 years.... thats it. Time and again I would be laughed at as I wheeled my little amp in front Marshall Stacks during the 80's metal years only to see the look of astonishment after our set at how LOUD and clear and awesome that little amp was. The only effect I used was a Whammy 2 pedal for a few years, otherwise, straight in. I still use this amp to this day in my cover band. All those bands with the giant stacks got rid of them now and play these little amps. Great work Phillip, I really enjoy your posts!
it would be really nice if you could do more vids on different practical amps in a practic or live situation ,this is how to me vids should be done on amps to give people more of what they can expect from an amp. this the best demo hands down that I've ever head from a video.
my question is what is biggest amp (solid state) I can use without having to use microphones to the drumms??? (my english sucks... right now I use a Orange crush 35rt but i want something bigger)
Very cool video!
Marshalls are known for punching through a band mix very well, this is because they have a strong midrange (the most important range for a guitar), and cut out a lot of lower bass to prevent it from sounding muddy. That way it stays punchy. That can really make the difference when you're pushing them to the limit. Marshall do have very specific classic tone, you either love it or hate it. I also really liked the Krank, sounds quite modern, but nice and balanced. 15-20 watts of tube power should be enough rehearsal without mic-ed amps, as long as you dont depend too much on pristine cleans or very bass heavy metal sounds. Speaker efficiency and number of speakers also make a big difference. If you go from 1 inefficient speaker to 2 efficient speakers you might end up gaining 8-12dB, which is a LOT!
This was awesome, but I am concerned with the clean sounds....I have a Blackstar HT-1H, which I see was in the second edition of this (awesome!) video, and through my HT-112 cabinet, it would never ever stand up in a gig unless I was only playing distortion. I think the take-away for me is that I need a 20-watt amp, with a 2x12 or 4x12, which I can leave at 20 watts to play clean or attenuate to play overdrive (I am all about cranking it to 10 for the best tone!). Am I right?
This is a great test. I'm curious abou the overall mix and volume level too. since I couldn't hear the singer at all, I'm wondering if the vocals were louder would we lose the guitar? Was there any room to boost the vocals?
Hi Phil! Great video and Tattoed Step-Sister was fun to listen to playing their modern rock set list. I found the video quite useful to watch as I have been using a 20 watt, small amp head for the last 2 years as my current amp rig and wanted to see what else is out there. I was quite happy to see that you used the Krank 1980Jr. 20 watt amp head in your video. I own & gig the Krank 1980 Jr. 20 watt amp head with a Marshall 1912 1x12 closed back cab myself. The information you posted on about the 1980 Jr. is incorrect. It has 4 band EQ on the Krank channel and a 2 band EQ on the Kleen channel, not a shared active EQ as posted in your video. The power tubes are 5881 or 6L6WGC power tubes, not 6V6 power tubes as posted in your video. I bought my amp used online for under $400. Unfortunately, the amp is no longer in production, but you can find them used either online or from a local seller. You may want to edit the information about the Krank 1980Jr. amp head so your viewers are not confused about the Krank 1980Jr. amp head.
I cheesed so hard when that breed riff came in
I feel really stupid asking this question, and I feel like it's wrong, but if I had a 100w pa speaker with a mic plugged in for vocals, a 100w bass amp and a 100w guitar amp would that gig alright? again I feel like I'm wrong but I'm just curious
Nice Video Phil. 20W amps are generally fine when they're distorted, however let down when you're playing clean - that's where the 50/60W excel. But hey, they all sounded pretty good. I was surprised with the Krank - actually sounded pretty good. One thing with the little amps is speaker cabs can make a huge difference (even putting an external cab on a combo)
I have a 1 Watt (Yes, just ONE Watt) Marshall combo. This has a selector on it so that I can have just 0.1 Watts if needed to keep it quiet, on the full power setting it is loud enough to gig with in some small venues, anywhere bigger it gets miced up through the PA. SOund brilliant.
I had a small Marshall with a 10" speaker and probably 12 watts that I used at home. It was solid state, which surprised me, but when I drive a bridge humbucker through an old Metal Zone 2, using only the gain and no distortion, it sounded very good. It was loud enough for a large living room. I usually play bass, and need more wattage and a cleaner sound.
Reminds me of my cover band almost 20 years ago. We played all those songs!
First off, I like that band. Well done guys..Very informative re: amp power. I have to say the Roland disappointed me, and I have one, but it's only for bedroom playing, and works very well. Thanks for doing this comparo, look forward to more. Any chance of getting a Vox NTG2 amp in there..?
remember raising the cab off the floor, closer to a direct line with the average height of the listener will increase perceived volume and projection.
Great vid! Take the Fender XD & line out to a Tech 21 Power Engine,,, or two. Then you will know loud! But, for the important thing is it can be loud & clean. Won't bypass your regular speaker either so you can make use of it as a monitor of sorts.
