My comment on each card based on order shown Card 1 He has synergy with giants but he is the wrong color for that so if you manage to find a commander of primarily red blue and green because based on what I saw those have the best synergy with giants the worst of the three being green oddly enough but if black is in a commander of that criteria and it supports giants than yea try and prove these two wrong I won't Card 2 it can be used in a well my stuff goes on in the background deck like say you play a terrible commander simply to get the enchantment on the backside of the card that kind of deck could have a card that can save you some health in that card Card 3 it can be used in a ramp deck for say you have cards to swap cards in your hand for land cards than if you have creatures left in your hand after over ramping boom you got a way to fix up your board especially if it has an etb tutor effect Card 4 I can't say anything about that card except FREAKING RULE OF COOL or in my situation I had that card for so long it was one of my first destruction options of the few so I played it but naturalize takes it's place nowadays but I might use it again for old times sake Card 5 Umm nothing to say good nor bad because I have no experience with the card Card 6 All I can say is oh your about to board wipe hang on this card let's me play this with flash and I actually have a clone of it in my hand different names for the WIN now your creature is safe and so is mine thanks to those two enchantments oh you don't need your creature yet well I'll naturalize my creature back into play and I'll hold on to yours until you need it thanks to my card in hand to destroy the other well unless you break our deal or it's at the endgame than well you will have to waste a card on it Card 7 and card 8 Casuals like myself can get some use out of them Card 9 if it's cheap than I'll take it for a draw burn swarm fusion strat so basically if it's budget friendly than that card is ok ish Card 10 finally I have the card and I planned on using it for my tribal illusion deck that I never got around to making but otherwise it's just sitting in my box unused Card 11 if desperate for black removal I'll take it Ouch I'ma budget player Card 12 Fair Card 13 uh what's that card called uhhhh I'm legitimately trying to remember Ominecance or something like that play that in a blue infinite mana deck than boom infinite card draw it's a good card draw commander because you can play it find a way to give it haste to use it's ability bounce it after drawing than since Ominecance is still in effect play that baby again and again and again after getting your card draw that is and no I'm no sure it's actually spelled Ominecance Card 14 GIVE ME THE RAMP I NEEEEEEEEEED IT in other words desperate for ramp Card 15 it's an ok slot in card in a ramp deck if you really need tokens if you get it out early it will be a beast of a token generator once you start your ramping Card 16 So your saying I can have two number 15s in one deck Card 17 RED BLUE INFINITE MANA FOR THE WIN I'm being quite literal Card 18 and 19 you do realize there are commanders that make equip costs zero right Card 20 I mean why is that real Card 21 desperate for draw Card 22 idk Card 23 desperate for tutor Card 24 Ok now I feel target for my love for halimar depths so go ahead and suggest a better halimar depths like that's all I want same tcgplayer price better halimar depths newoldEBM that's what I like to hear lol

They says there are better cards out there that should be played instead. They also prefer to play targetted land distruction in the land slot, which feels like a personal preference that anything particularly "high powered vs low powered". Personally i like AS in my yarok for it's versatility too. I'm always looking for modal over focussed cards, and with yarok its worth 5cmc. In other decks, probably not so much. However my yarok is far from high powered, so the "unplayable" status probably doesn't apply here either. That's the thing about a lot of the comments on this video - i feels like lots of folk have missed the "high powered, no budget limit, our opinion may differ to yours" caveats.

@Joel Chatfield it isn't like saying prosh is weak because of 0 attack kobelds at all. It's a complete lie to create such an absurd analogy. They simply said 6 mana, 2 bodies on etb and attack isn't that good. Prosh is 6 mana, 6 bodies on etb, is in your commandzone, is a sac outlet, and can go infinite as well. Cards aren't good because they can go infinite with 2 other cards, especially when your in the 99. Prosh goes infinite with food chain, there's a 2 card combo that's essentially one since he's in the commandzone. If you want a combo win, there's plenty of two card combos, which will be just more consistent then 3 card combos (generally, their are some corner cases like I can tutor for 3 cards with this one card etc.) And therefore simply better the 3 card infinite combos, or there are 3 card combos but every card is simply fine on its own, whereas playing 6 drop 3 body etb, especially in the meta these guys are talking about (7-9) is simply not good enough. Yes in a lose powered meta it does work, in a high powered meta it gets cut.

I play it in mono-black midrange. I have a planewalker subtheme, so the bodies protect my walkers as they get close to ultimate. I can, and have dropped it after a board wipe and swung for lethal because my opponents had very few cards in hand (a classic midrange/control strategy that no one seems to respect anymore). Plus the fun factor. There aren't any other mono-black cards that fill the niche that same way. Plus you are in black, so creatures mana costs are rarely relevant because of reanimate, animate dead, dance of the dead, necromancy, et. al.

Typically my favorite decks I make are extremely flexible and can win 3 different ways: commander damage, creature damage, combo. When I first started playing EDH it was with a CEDH group and you kind of quickly realize that out of thousands of cards there is really a ''handfull'' of actually ''good'' cards for CEDH, 95% of which is blue LOL. I realized also though that those sort of players are so hung up on combos they rarely have decent defense so I went with a Ultra aggressive budget (at the time) Xenagos build and in 1-3 hits average took out my opponents. Rarely did they ever steal Xenagos because I kept the devotion down and usually only had 1 or 2 creatures out in case of the regular board wipe, never put down a bunch of creatures, always try to keep some in hand ready to fill the vacant space (smart aggro player). Part of the problem my opponents realized was they couldn't waste all their removal on my stuff they needed it to stop each others combos. Sure I didn't always win but I was surprised how often I did ;P

Some of them I was agreeing with, some slightly disagreeing with, but still could see your points. Until you said that Arcane Lighthouse is unplayable. WHAT? How do you figure that when things like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are used so often to protect important pieces? It’s a land that still taps for mana, doesn’t come into play tapped, and only cost 2 essentially, to strip hexproof/shroud from a major threat. And it’s repeatable. It would be different if you had to sacrifice the land, but it sticks around. I just don’t get your reasoning there. After that I questioned your judgment a bit more.

Are you sure "unplayable" = "it can't win you on your next turn"? Mana cost is definitely a factor that could make a card "weaker", but I wouldn't equate that with "unplayable", consider there are so many ways to cheat expensive cards into play in EDH. And, some of the cards you mentioned are quite useful in mono-color decks, when you can't delve into other colors for extra effects, such as Hero's Downfall.

  • @trumpetperson11

How many removal spells are you playing that you need downfall? Sounds like you are going to one for one yourself into a hole. Also, all of the expensive cards that were "unplayable" where labeled that because there were many other cards that are either a) the same mana but better (like please don't tell me you are wasting your reanimate on Archetype of endurance), b) there are cards that are cheaper that do most of what the expensive one can do, or c) the effect is way overrated. The only cards I would say are debatable on the list would be: RSD, Rampaging Baloths, and maybe Acidic slime if you want a flickerable way to hit lands.

@@trumpetperson11 Toshiro Umezawa is one place I'd play Heroic Downfall, an extra trigger for his ability to use black instants in his graveyard. And no, I don't use Archetype of Endurance either, but that doesn't change what I said: There are ways to cheat in expensive cards in EDH that mana cost could be a hindrance, but not enough to make a card unplayable. And yes, some cards on their list are definitely not worthwhile for its cost, even if they could be cheated into play. Some, like Acidic Slime, isn't as "unplayable" as they described. R-Sage may cheaper, but Slime is a good duplicate with two extra effects, and a preferable cloning target if you have a chance to kill lands.

Your saying that you're referencing higher power commander yet 3/4 of the cards you go over don't even break 10% playability or even in popular decks: grave titan (7%) empyrial archangel (0%) Vraska (6%), archetype of endurance (4% ), arcane lighthouse (3%), pillar of origins (1%), maze of ith (4%), arcanis (4%), canopy baloth (0% LITTERALLY 1 DECK) argentum armour (2%), darksteel plate (4%). Of these are actually good picks, as they are actually played with popular commanders (though some not high powered, but popular): acidic slime (18% yarok), zendikar resurgent (14% zacama), narset of the ancient way (1% bralin / shabraz, gavi, kykar) Heroes downfall (7% toshiro but really he plays any black spell), explosive vegetation (16% despite having 3 function printings of cards that are just better - r/g omnath), rampaging baloth (10% lord windgrace), warstorm surge (10% omnath / ilharg), oblivion ring (9% probably inflated due to precons). I'm not going to bother with the rest as it just looks more of the same. Listen, you're proposing initially that these are supposed to be highly played cards in popular decks. Half of these cards are actually bad at a casual level let alone "higher powered". Some even dipping to 2-1-0%. What's the point of discussing a card like pillar of origins if it's played by 1% of people. Instead; Use some data, reference popular commanders, challenge cards in archetypes. (like you did with explosive vegetation or grave titan w/ nim deathmantle). Those were great. Theres so many tools to find out what are the top played cards / commanders it just feels like you've compiled a list of unplayable cards in their niche scenarios.

It is so interesting to come back to this video after watching the "we lowered our power level" video. For a long time, watching most commander centric videos where "make your deck stronger" " here is how to win." I get it, anyone can build those decks, follow a meta, tutor for exact cards, counter the counterspels, etc. Where magic gets really fun, for me, is when someone had an idea for a deck, pieces it together, playtests and finetunes. You will get so much more enjoyment out of seeing the changes you made pull through and work out. Any deck that is just waiting for one of any number of infinite combos is boring af and does not make for a fun experience. It isn't exploring all of what magic has to offer, it is just playing "who finds their combo first." Commander has 99 cards that cannot repeat for a reason. There should be multiple interworking parts to overcome on offense and defense.

When I clicked on this video title, I thought it was going to be a silly list talking about cards like Battle of Wits. I agree with a few of the cards here, like argentum armor, bad Vraska, and Lilliana. But when you start saying that card X is bad because it costs 6-7 mana and doesn't instantly win you the game, you are much closer to cEDH level than you'd like to admit. That's fine if you want to play that way, but some playgroups like mine enjoy what commander was a few years ago, as a big mana format where games will often go for many turns. When your mentality is that all mana ramp should be 3cmc or less, and tapping 6 mana to play Grave Titan (won't say on turn 6 because it's probably sooner than that with ramp), means that your opponent will spend their turn wiping your board and instantly killing you, that's more of a cEDH mentality.

I like this video, and I get that you might be talking about cEDH instead of regular commander - and I definitely see the arguments for a lot of these. But I also feel like the arguments for some of them are not very well-thought out and assumes that every deck is just a hodge-podge of random good stuff cards with no synergy or themes. Cards like Arcanis and Rune-Scarred Demon are obviously great reanimate targets, Rune-Scarred moreso since it's ETB but Arcanis would be great with Sedris as an example. The argument that a "better" card exists is a weird way to state that a card is unplayable - maybe a deck would want to run both Demonic Tutor and Rune-Scarred Demon?

Grave Titan unplayable?? Six mana isn't hard with a Dark Ritual and mana rocks. I regularly have mine out by turn 4, who cares why it has deathtouch, it can still trade off with so bigger creatures. It's used in zombie decks that have no problem reanimating creature So you're paying six mana for 3 creatures, 2 of which are 90% of the time getting additional buffs from the many zombie tribal, a 6/6 body that can trade for anything bigger. Each attack it adds to the board, and if goes in the graveyard it's guaranteed to come back giving you that same additional 2 creatures on drop and 2 more each attack. Unplayable my ass. Is it competitive?? Maybe but easily dealt with in that the environment. But for your average edh game hell yes it is. Outside of a zombie deck it isn't effective, I'll agree but where it is effective it's pretty sweet.
