When I first started to watch this channel, I couldn’t understand 100% without subtitles. I was at 70% or so. But after a few years, now I’m able to understand almost everything. You helped me a lot. Thanks Lucy.

Great video (again), thank you! In Hungarian we have the "cry wolf" as well, and two other similar idioms: instead of "miss the boat" we say " that boat has already gone" and instead of " skin of my teeth" we say "it depends on a hairbreadth " :)

You don't need because a native English speaker speaks English differently to another native speaker which are from Australia, USA, etc. Like every country has the same different accent.

We use some form of idioms all the time in our daily conversations without even realizing them. Great work Lucy.

My homework: 1. I want to make my own game, but I feel it would not be popular, because it'd be a drop in the ocean. 2. I called my cousin to ask her when she's free to go out, but she didn't respond. Now I'm waiting for her to call me back - the ball is in her court. 3. My mother is very helpful and she'd bend over backwards to make things done. 4. I won the competition by the skin of my teeth. It was definitely not a piece of cake! 5. I was a judge at the contest, but I felt like wanting to sit on the fence and rather not vote.

Very good, I have 2 small suggestions for you! :) For #4, "by the skin of my teeth" is usually used to mean that you just barely managed to complete something either because you a) didn't try as hard as you should have or b) you underestimated how difficult it would be. If 2 runners were to finish a race at almost the same time, we wouldn't say that the winner won "by the skin of his teeth", because it would sound a little negative. A good example would be "Wow, I didn't study for that test as much as I should have! I only passed by the skin of my teeth!" For #5, "on the fence" usually implies that you are having difficulty deciding something. I'm not sure if I've ever heard someone say that they wanted to sit on the fence, as it is usually a position people don't desire. "I can't decide between going to France or Spain.. I'm still on the fence".

Lucy, you are the best in teaching English for me. Hometask: Your lesson is definetly NOT a drop in the ocean in our English studies, though using all today's idioms may seem to bite off more than we can chew. On the other hand, we should pull ourselves together and to bend our backwards trying to do our best. But don't be too hard on yourselves and cut yourselves a slack from time to time in order to do your best .

Yes I did this year 🥴 I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. I’m studying Esol English ‏ level one, studying fashion level two, studying English and maths functional skills level one and also I’m studying photography level two and I’m a mother got three children and at the same time I’m working as a photographer and make-up artist fashion designer and a housewife 😂😂 but I as you said it worth it and hopefully I’ll be successful by the end of the year in all my subjects studies.

Hi Lucy 😊 i'm Algerian English student and my original language is Arabic which has no relation with English language but we have a nearly similar background according to our use of French in our daily life,so it was a little bit easy to learn English but the hardiest thing that we faced was to learn how can we speak English with an accent either British or American because we r still being confused to use them so that we mixed them all the time and we were told that it's a mistake ....i realy like your way explaining us how to be or act like a native speaker and speak English as a British ones i found your videos very very beneficial and clear😍 thank you a lot❤

Many of those are the exact same in French! I wonder if we translated them from English or the other way around. Knowing both languages share a lot tricks me sometimes: I try using a French idiom in English and it makes to sense to the other person; then later I’ll second guess myself and ask what the correct expression would be... only to learn that time it’s actually the same 😂 I’ve bitten more than I could chew when I decided to study in two very demanding schools at once (one full time and one half) AND work part time. Toward the end it took a serious toll on my health. Fortunately everything worked out successfully, but after that I had to take several months off and then a couple slow years because I was just too burnt out. It’s a good lesson to learn at a young age I guess: life is not a race. And don’t take your health for granted! I love your channel, I always learn something new: thank you! Hopefully I remember some of it when the time comes 😅

Thank you very much Lucy. In Thailand, we do have the one similar to “cry wolf”, but we call it “cry sheep”. Also, for “miss the boat”, we call it “miss the train”. I enjoy your lessons and your beautiful accent of a native English.

That's interesting! In Russia we have a similar expression to "miss the train": the "train has gone", i. e. you've lost a chance. Our cultures aren't close and it's very interesting to see these two expressions so close to each other

I had no idea a few of these were used in England. I like "a drop in the ocean" more than the American equivalent of "a drop in the bucket".

Homework: 1) I wanted them to stop fighting, but when I told them I just added fuel to the fire. 2) People say that I always cut to the chase, I guess it's because I don't fancy loosing time. 3)I usually sit on the fence, I don't want to get involved in all the drama. 4) I wish my parents cut me some slack, they wear me out! 5) It's pointless keeping talking about it your guess is as good as mine, we'll see who's right later on

In Spanish, we have a way of saying something similar: si te (lo) digo, te miento/ if I tell you (something), I'll be lying to you. It is used to answer when you are asked about something you don't know or aren't sure

It means that, whatever I say would just be a guess so you may as well make your own guess, your guess is as likely to be as accurate as mine. If we wanted to end a debate between two people with opposite views, we would probably say something like, "We'll just have to agree to disagree." or, "We'll just agree to differ." Meaning there's no point in continuing a discussion because no one is going to change their mind about the issue.

@@sirderam1... Yes indeed. Actually, I meant ending discussions between two people with different views where the discussion would be infinite dued to the fact that both are not bringing empirical data to prove their point. I come across this situation 99% of the times I discuss politics. xDxD

We also use "it needs two hands to clamp"for cooperation ,to succees we have to work hand in hand .we have to help each other.
