20 December 2023

Hello all and how do you do? For this penultimate video of the year, I’d like to show you how I chuckle at some videos you can watch online of pilots landing the big jets. I can only think they are made for dramatic effect because truly, professional pilots do not handle their aircraft as in the way shown in some videos online. Have a watch and laugh out loud if need be because I had to emulate them today in a few minutes I had left over in the B747 flight simulator. Enjoy!

Obet ... absolutely brilliant video. You sure made me laugh watching you fly like many videos of pilots flying all sorts of different aircraft. I've commented on many videos asking why the pilot is steering the aircraft like he's driving an off road rally car and the reply is generally because of the aircraft battling strong head or tail wind or side winds. To all pilots out there, you need to watch this video ... follow the rules of aviation ... Aviate, Navigate and Communicate ... AND FLY CALM LIKE OBET! ✈ 👍👍👍

I see your point, however, lighter aircraft in a crosswind or wind shear may require some of that action.

  • @silverman9995

Obet, love your videos. Unfortunately, I respectfully disagree. It absolutely depends upon what airplane you fly. If you are flying the B737 or B727, significantly more control inputs are required as compared to let’s say a B767 ( probably even considerably less on a the B747). I’m no aerodynamicist, but believe it’s because many narrow body airplanes do not have inboard ailerons. It took me some time to stop over controlling when I transitioned from the MAX to the B767. Just an observation.

I worked on both the 747 with all of the cable and pulley controls as well as the 777 with all the fly by wire. There might be a little more input on the older plane because of the rigging but not much as you demonstrated so well. Can you imagine doing that crazy stuff with an Airbus joystick. Of course not. Happy Holidays!

Sure, accentuated. However, the following clip (in my view) features one of the most dramatic landings I've yet witnessed (on KZread) where the very aggressive movement of the control wheel ensured that a (relatively) successful flare and landing could be achieved. I believe that the aircraft involved might have been a Boeing 707. The event pertained to an emergency whereby both pilot incapacity and a most serious handling problem (due to degradation in the performance of primary controls) could have ended in disaster. Initially the one remaining pilot (who was also slightly incapacitated as a result of consuming alcohol) needed to be helped out by RADAR controllers by way of a Surveillance Radar assisted approach. Later, the pilot was also assisted by a tower controller (who had also been a former naval pilot). Because of this tower controller's tenacity, his self discipline and his calming demeanour, it is likely that he very much helped to save everyone on board the aircraft the evening the event occurred. Here's how it panned out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYeF27mYnJu1l6g.html

But Captain, I would like to ask that in the old days, planes like 747-400 is not using fly-by-wire which is less sensitive. Therefore, during an approach, in order to maintain the approach profile, lots of self-corrections/opposite inputs are necessary. Is that true?
