2 Stroke Yamaha 55hp Cafe Racer Nearing completion! Pt. 4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is Part 4 of Resto-modding a trashed street legal 1970's Yamaha RD350 two stroke. This one in particular is one of a kind. Many people simply thought I was wasting my time, but I like proving people wrong. There is something very special about the words "2 stroke and street legal" In the same sentence.

Holy crap dude... You're making me cry over here. The 1975 Yamaha rd350 parallel twin two-stroke was my first bike I ever owned. I bought it in 79 so it was only 4 years old. It was wicked fast and I admit it did scare me. I owned it till I got my first Honda rd350 and said goodbye to the two-stroke. It still holds a special place in my heart and yes I still ride today at the age of 58. Warms my heart to see these things still on the road. Nice.

As long as the bearing journals are acceptable the pitting in the case shouldnt harm anything.

Unless you hold the cases up to the light and seem pinholes he couldve used those no problem, bigger issue is, did he send the crank out and have it pressed apart and all new seals between the cyls and on the ends, if not it will seize up and throw him over the bars in the first couple miles- Trying to drive a Multi-Cyl two-stroke with old dried out crank seals is just asking for stiches

@@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes give him some credit. He is capable of all that which you mentioned. If the crank was/is in similar shape as the rest of the motor i'm sure it was pretty crunchy in those bearings. Rebuild, run good oil at a good ratio, and that'll go a long ways Vasily.

YES! That is indeed looking EPIC. Lomas pipes too. Nice! If you’re still struggling with rear suspension geometry, you could do a lot worse than just copying the RD350LC /early TZ rear monoshock geometry. Definitely an R5 non-reed engine in an RD chassis. PS if you want to tidy the rear end up, you can set the stinger pipes deeper into the belly of the pipe so they stick out less (but instead stick out inside the belly of the chamber. PPS The pitting on the crankcase chambers doesn’t matter. Only the bearing and seal bores plus the mating surfaces must be free from pitting. Use the reed block barrels, much nicer to ride than the R5 piston ported jobs.

  • @harrisonbosley6812
    @harrisonbosley68122 жыл бұрын

The bike is a RD but there were lots of R5 parts on it like the side covers, oil tank, fuel tank, etc. The engine you pulled out was an RD, the engine sitting in it is a R5, RD = reed valves, R5 = no reeds, they were piston ported. I've owned and raced both!

Thanks for doing these videos on the RD/ R5, its nice to see the younger generation embracing the bikes I grew up with. You have motivated me to get back into building bikes, thank you for that. I dragged my 71 R5b into the garage and am in the process of building a street tracker, I'm pumped about it. I bought a Ducati 750 Monster front forks & triple trees and RZ350 wheels and brake rotors. The engine was fresh many years ago and I put it in my dirt track bike with all the race goodies and it rips. I have the ported RD engine with RZ reed cages that was in the dirt tracker ready for the new Vito's crank and Banshee pistons. Great job Vasily, thanks for getting this old man off the couch and back in the shop.

Couldn't afford an RD, so I "graduated" from my X6 Hustler Suzuki 250cc street twin to (of all things), a Jawa 350cc with no rear shocks, so I was content to hardtail it until I found a set that would do the job. Finally wound up with a Yamaha YDS3 350 twin and I just went nuts with it. Used a pair of DT175 cylinders and pistons, an unspecified set of close ratio gears, changed drive chain ratios and found myself with a reasonably capable machine after a bike mechanic offered a free port and polish if he could have the first ride. That boy knew his business and he even used my Commodore 128D to formulate and weld me up a set of torque pipes and threw in a set of larger carbs which he taught me to rejet and tune. After that, it was a hellbound rocket buzzsaw and I went up to a 530 chain so I didn't have to keep buying new, OEM ones. By that time, the writing was on the wall. When my YDS3 was stolen, I made the only reasonable jump, to an H2 Kawasaki 750cc triple 2 stroke. Probably more for the goose flesh that hit me at about 5,000 rpms than anything else. Well, enough about me. Next time you find corroded inner cases, just use Epoxy. Makes things a lot simpler and cheaper. Have fun, you're gonna love it!

I've been into these for 40 years! one tip I can give of fhand is to cut all the cross braces off under motor and put a simple tube in about 4" in front of old brace. then take kickstand pivot piece and weld it to cross brace and frame. this lets you put better angle on it and it don't hit them fancy pipes when folded up

This bike is going to be an epic ride! I still remember the first time I rode a stock RD-350. I had a '76 Honda CB750F, and it was a fun ride, but a friend with an RD-350 suggested we trade bikes for a short ride, as he wanted to see what the Honda was like. On that RD, I felt like I had just sat on a bicycle, it was so light! The first time I grabbed the throttle in first gear, and the front end came up about a foot or so, I was really impressed! With the new chambers and port work, this bike you're building will be a real sweet ride!

The bearing journals condition and size, the case mating surfaces, and the bolt holes are what's important providing the cases aren't windowed... None of that etching or corrosion pitting matters as long as it's not all the way through... Those cases look good and usable as the journals weren't scarred or worn down...

Bike looks amazing. Love all the work you have put into it. Cant wait for the next episode. You should put some better front forks on it, The suspension is a very important part of helping you keep the bike on the road and getting all the grip from the tires that you can. Go to ebay and find some cheap usd forks(something like a fork from a Aprilia rs 125 would be perfect for a bike like yours) And if i that pited engine you have was mine, i would use those engine cases. I dont see anything that should make any problems. And for the tail area of your bike, Time to learn them glasfiber skills. And make a perfect copy of what you have in your head. Good luck building the bike, and thanks for taking us along the build.

I love this build. I haven't apriciate a spot where can be critical the pitting. If the pittng isn't located where the bearigs or seals are sitting everything is ok, the pitting could have eaten a lot of wall too. I would try it if the seals and bearings sit properly, and check for some to thin walls, in the case appears one, just add some material to the wall.

I bought an RD400c , new, in ‘76, my cuz and I were the first in Eastern Canada to get these giant killers and we drove’m like we stole’m. My brother and other cuz picked up a pair of ‘76 Honda CB 360T’s and they were pretty good rides as well, but nowhere close to the RD’s. I’m 65 and I still remember cruising down Saint Catherine street in downtown Montreal and getting the looks from many people and other riders. The Yamaha was the first production bike to get 1) self canceling turn signals 2) Alloy Mag wheels 3) Disc brakes Frt&Rr ( for its cc’s) and we had Flat bars installed at the dealer. Canada’s colorist we’re Black/White and Gold trim work and name badges. Killer look and Giant killers, we had NO problem with any bike, up to the Kawasaki Z-1 900, just a wonderful machine which I’ll remember to the end. Fantastic build, enjoy it safely for a long time, it’s a memory maker.

Pitting in the KC area will not be a problem as long as it doesn't leak when you put the oil in it. If you're really worried about it, clean the pits very good with some brake clean, and spread a very thin layer of JB Weld on it and then polish it back out after it has cured. That way at least you know the case will not leak. The case is not a structural part of the engine in that case. The structural part is what holds the bearings. All the case does is keep the oil inside it. Quit sweating the small stuff. Congratulations, you're the first one I've ever seen tack welding frame Parts onto a vehicle with the MIG welder even close to the right temperature and settings. I would still have a little bit warmer than that but that's pretty good. Hopefully you're using at least 80% Argon

Make Sure you leave enough clearance between your shock mount and the tire, the tire will grow taller at higher speeds and ya don't want it rubbing and have to redo it after it's all painted.... Also if you ever decide on a taller tire you will be SOL, easy fix now... Your doin a killer job young gun!
