My dad lived in Hattiesburg. He was in a mobile home when this happened. The trailer he was in suffered EF1 damage. He said he heard what sounded like a train and he said he heard a loud "wham!" Luckily the tornado went around him. He got between the door to his room and the living room. Thank God that the tornado did not kill anybody in Hattiesburg.

A tornado hit close to my dad’s house one time. He was eating chicken and dumplings. As he was headed toward the bathroom tub for safety, he had his bowl of chicken/dumplings. Remember we live in the Deep South and respect our victuals! Dad lived to tell the tale and said it sounded exactly like a train.

This was my old account. My dad passed away in January 2023 from heart failure, almost 10 years after this tornado. He said two days before he died that this tornado scared him.
First time ever being in a tornado was this one. Went to USM and was at work just a few blocks away from where the tornado crossed Hardy. Scariest sound I’ve ever heard in my life. The only time in my life where I can remember just shaking in fear. Miraculously , no lives were lost this day.

From raw video when residents keep phone or camera rolling while being in direct impact of tornado hitting their home there's not much that sounds more terrifying. I ve never been in that situation but have listened to many recordings. Imagine believing this is your last moment alive and how violent dying in a tornado will be. I m sure people are affected long after the event even if they aren't scratched. It's not always easy to listen and I get no enjoyment from their screams and distress. I do and have learned much about tornadoes from the sounds if that's all there is. I wish everyone capturing on film a tornado then realizing it's coming please keep recording even if it's only audio. I totally understand the reluctance to post on You Tube and respect everyone's right to or not afterwards. I can't say losing everything in a moment while believing my last moments are here worse even my family , wife or children then sharing that depending. It is helpful learning how vortex winds and buildings compare and damage process.

Crazy how time flies. Today (02/10/2020) is the seven year anniversary of this tornado hitting my hometown. It still amazes me that nobody was killed by this tornado.
I was 500 feet away from this thing in my dorm when it hit campus. I have been in 3 others while living in campus but none of those compare to this one. The scariest part wasn't the tornado itself, but the days after when nobody on campus spoke and everyone walked around just stunned and sort of confused. It was great to see the community get together yesterday and help restore things to "normal" definitely made me proud to call myself a Golden Eagle. Southern Miss To The Top!

This video is so powerful. People from anywhere else see a tornado devastating a city, but I see it in my town and home. I see this thing go over my friend Lindsey, then Candace, Cathy, Gene, over my town's main street, over my alma mater, and over my sisters at work and church. I can follow it along by names of loved ones and it breaks my heart, but mostly this video just fills it with thanks. We are all counting our blessings here in Hattiesburg.

I was in Hattiesburg that afternoon. I lived in The Lakes at Turtle Creek apartments, just north of the road where this was shot. My girlfriend was visiting with her dogs and I remember she was in the tub with pillows and the dogs. It was scary.
I did disaster relief after the 2017 Hattiesburg tornadoes and literally swept up houses that were flattened. 😕 There was a woman killed that had moved into the house the day before. So sad.

Fortune42100, I've been through 4 separate tornadoes. At first, the humidity is quite noticeable. Then you feel a warm wind, which may or may not be accompanied by rain. You can feel a heaviness in the air. Then the wind picks up. You might be able to feel static in the air. Then you feel a noticeable shift in the air pressure. Your ears might try to pop. After that (depending on the type of tornado) the wind speed increases and a roaring can be heard.

Could someone explain the logic behind having your four-ways on while going towards a tornado? Is it just to warn the others about abrupt stops or what?
One thing that makes Dixie Alley so dangerous besides the terrain is just how fast the storms move. They can have tornados that move at over 60mph, that's crazy.
What does that have to do with the tornado?
