2-1-1938 Sherman Hemsley "Ain’t That A Kick In The Head"

Sherman Alexander Hemsley (February 1, 1938 - July 24, 2012) was an American actor and comedian best known for his role as George Jefferson on the CBS television series All in the Family and The Jeffersons, Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series Amen and B.P. Richfield on the ABC series Dinosaurs. For his work on The Jeffersons, Hemsley was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award. He won a NAACP Image Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2012.
Music career
In 1989, Hemsley, who had been a jazz keyboardist, released a single, "Ain't That a Kick in the Head". This was followed in 1992 with Dance, an album of rhythm and blues music. He appeared on Soul Train around the time of the record's release and also performed the song "Eyes in the Dark".
Hemsley was an enthusiastic fan of 1970s progressive rock bands, including Yes, Gentle Giant, Gong, and Nektar. In 1999, Hemsley collaborated with Yes lead singer Jon Anderson on an album, Festival of Dreams, but it was not released.[
Hemsley was a shy and intensely private man, described by some as reclusive. He avoided the Hollywood limelight and little of his personal life was public knowledge beyond the facts that he never married and had no children. In 2003, however, Hemsley granted a rare video interview to the Archive of American Television. "It [playing George Jefferson] was hard for me. But he was the character. I had to do it."

That beat--that's just insanity. Such a talented musician and an accomplished comedic actor. He was the guy who really made progressive rock popular in America; he opened a lot of doors for a lot of musicians.

Sherman Hemsley did it all, except make compromises. We’ll forever miss him, and Isabel Sanford, so damn much.

Saw him in "Pearlie Victorious".....long ago on or off Broadway with my mom and dad. He was great! Many people emerged from that play such as: Clevon Little, Melba Moore, and many others.

My family and I loved that play! First saw it on Showtime when we first got cable TV and have been in love with it ever since! Melba Moore tore up "I've Got Love"; all the music and choreography were great 😊 Truly a classic!

FYI: Sherman Hemsley wasn't the only actor who recorded music on the side. Dorian Harewood, Robert Guillaume, Esther Rolle, and Garrett Morris are just a few who recorded music albums.

Haha! I get where you're coming from. The thing to listen to here are the rhythms and the layering--the arrangement of the music. Popularity wise? This isn't a hit. Musically? The degree of musicianship is through the roof.
