If I recall correctly, this song is about lead singer Nils Frykdahl on a late night bender with his brother and his brother's sketchy junkie friend. As with many SGM songs, Nils' brother Per (nordic name pronounced like 'pear') was inspirational for his frequently odd behavior and recorded antics. Other weird, disturbed voice mails Per left became the lyrics or inspiration for other songs, long after Per's death in 2005.

Thanks for checking it out! For me, I spent my childhood and most of my young-adulthood only hearing music that stayed inside the realm of "generally acceptable," e.g. christian music, classic rock, classical, etc. When I finally got out of that and into a secular college, friends and internet forums started introducing me to other things like Dream Theater, Opeth, Devin Towsend, King Crimson, Meshuggah, and others that broke that mold. I have memories of my childhood of wanting something other than whan I was hearing (I asked my dad to play some jazz once, not knowing that I wanted metal). Eventually I found SGM, which I think was the first band that felt really foreign. It took some time for me to get used to it but eventually I fell in love with the discomfort and the artistry. They are definitely one of my favorite bands to exist.

I totally understand and respect that!!! Honestly, my story is pretty similar, it just took me on a different path. Hell, the first album I ever purchased with my own money was Weird Al's Even Worse, which I got for a quarter at a garage sale. Obviously things made their way to metal and all that too, but I will always admire Weird Al for "puncturing the pomposity of pop music" as Dr. Demento put it.

Being a straight up rock song, 1997 is by far, SGM's most "normal", and to me least interesting, song. New York Dolls and Dead Boys are from the early and mid 1970s.
