The first time I saw an interview with Marilyn Manson, I was amazed! The man is brilliant, extremely well spoken & very knowledgeable in general. I can't remember who was interviewing him but it was something on prime-time like 60 Minutes, Larry King or something like that (this was in the 90's...so loooong before social media). The sharp contrast between his intense look (latex clothing, iconic contacts, goth-type make-up & nail polish) & the incredibly intelligent, well-spoken manner with which he presented himself surprised not only the audience watching but the interviewer as well. I so distinctly recall the look of shock & awe on the interviewer's face - it was priceless!

They actually really make a lot of sense lyrically, and serve as anthems for the underdogs of our society who feel left out or disposed. Stevie, I enjoy your reactions. If you think this song has lyrical, intelligent substance, I would recommend 1996, Man That You Fear, or Get Your Gunn. Manson wanted to shock the world (and he absolutely did), but his lyrics can get into some very deep topics that the average person glosses over. This is a rabbit hole you should go down. American culture is many things, and Marilyn Manson is a significant section of that culture. Last thing, the media held him partially to blame for the Columbine school shooting back in the day simply because of who he was. The shooters did not even listen to his music. There's a short interview clip with him from the movie "Bowling for Columbine" that sums up all that needs to be said in a sentence. He's not necessarily a good person, but his intelligence is clear.

Marilyn Manson is all about "shock value" when it comes to the looks of his stage show and his videos. But when you pull back the layer of "shock" you realize that the man himself is pretty damn talented and rather intelligent. I mean, he knows that there is a "marketing element" to his career, and he leaned into that marketing element rather hard when he first came on the scene. But when you listen to him in interviews, see him doing talk shows or radio shows, he is really aware of what is going on politically, socially, economically and internationally. He clearly studies different aspects of media outlets and views to be informed of what he is talking about, and how to weave it into his music. HOWEVER, the one thing that kind of "detracts" from him is the number of "covers" that he has done. Most of them are pretty damn good, especially his version of "Sweet Dreams" and "Tainted Love". But after awhile, you kind of want him to do more 'original material" than he does on an album. And this is why he has always been "hit/miss" with me. I just don't really get into him the way that I get into other groups like Metallica or Black Sabbeth or Iron Maiden and Eminem. And after awhile the "shock value visuals" became rather tiresome for me personally. But like I said, when the man sits down and speaks about something, he is highly intellectual about it and takes it seriously.

Anything off of his Mechanical Animals album is just perfection. Every song on hat album is a poetic or musical masterpiece. Speed of Pain, Dope Show, Mechanical Animals, I don't like the Drugs, Coma White, Dissasociative.. anything.

For me, this song and video has always shown the intersectionality of all types of art. All art- music, writing, dance and imagery- is supposed to make you feel some type of way. This is no less valuable than Francisco De Goya’s “Saturn Eating His Children” or when the Catholic Church hired a sculptor named Geef to depict Satan. When presented with they statue, they were angry because he looked too beautiful. So they hired Geef’s brother to make a different one and he made Satan look beautiful AND SEXY! Metallica’s “One” is no less meaningful than Mozart’z Requiem. And I would argue that Hannibal Lecture in the books, movies and the TV show are just as valid. But, in this song in particular, don’t miss the bars. And I don't want you and I don't need you Don't bother to resist, or I'll beat you It's not your fault that you're always wrong The weak ones are there to justify the strong The beautiful people, the beautiful people It's all relative to the size of your steeple You can't see the forest for the trees And you can't smell your own shit on your knees There's no time to discriminate Hate every motherfucker that's in your way Hey, you, what do you see? Something beautiful or something free? Hey, you, are you trying to be mean? If you live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean (Ah, ah) The worms will live in every host It's hard to pick which one they hate the most The horrible people, the horrible people It's all anatomic as the size of your steeple Capitalism has made it this way Old-fashioned fascism will take it away Hey, you, what do you see? Something beautiful or something free? Hey, you, are you trying to be mean? If you live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean.

I freaking love Marilyn! This man's music is my go to music, I was acquainted with him early on 17-18yrs I'm pushing 50 now. I love all of his music, it has spoken to me. I know what it feels like to be disregarded cuz I'm not outwardly 'beautiful' and have felt the rejection and distain from this world. His lyrics are beautiful, tragic, painful...pure poetry. His style is art imo, I love his videos, thought provoking and thoughtfully depicted. Being ugly doesn't mean your 'evil', and just cuz some of us question religion doesn't make us evil either.
