    Technology to rebuild actual limbs with synthetic parts is better than installing motors and having a computer remote control it. The last thing anyone want is your arms going digital making it prone to be hijacked. If the brain is working then repairing the limbs so the brain control it is best. But fixing the brain brings the question of if you solely believe the tech won't be exploited to control.

  • @gaberyan6283

    @gaberyan6283

    19 күн бұрын

    @@dra6o0n Ultimately what will happen here is once the team at nuralink develops the ability to finely detect the neural activity of the brain in relation to the motions needed to drive bionic limbs in a normal human way, they will just cut off the old limbs and install bionic implants that sync with the nuralink. You won't ever be able to feel these implants and you wont feel like your moving, but you should be able to get full range of motion even as a quadriplegic like this guy. Thats one of the usecases for this type of technology in the future. What he is doing right now is helping nuralink build the software that will be used to make the robotic prosthetics useful, we already have 1 to 1 equivalent prosthetics we just need to build a software solution that is capable of adapting to each person and understanding neural intentions properly and consistently.

    The way it is set up is, as far as I understand, basically the same as if you yourself would show someone something on your computer and talk to them while using the mouse to point at things at the screen. The implant basically reads the brain signals that fire for when one would move one's arm / hand and translates it into the mouse courser movement. Pretty neat.

    Sure, it’s a great breakthrough. My worry is that it’s a breakthrough done by a company owned by Elon Musk. What worries me is what will be done with the technology and the information it generates. This sort of breakthrough should be open source, it shouldn’t be restricted to one company and patented. Ever tried fixing a Tesla car without Tesla’s help? Both the physical hardware and software is pretty restricted- they don’t use standard bolt heads for example but their own design like Apple does with iPhone screws and bolts. Now imagine that sensibility applied to a technology that actively maps and reads a brain like this one seems too? I’ve got big brother meets Idiocracy vibes!

    Noland Arbaugh is an amazing pioneer. I have this sad memory of a young man who suffered a similar paralyzing accident, but also had to be on a ventilator. He was in a nursing home. White walls and white ceiling was all he saw. He had a parabola-shaped frown indelibly etched into his face. He filed in the courts to have the plug pulled so he could die and succeeded. What Neuralink has done here is miracle. I always think of Noland when I hear Elon haters taking their shots at any Tesla or SpaceX setback. I wish the best to Noland and hope that many more patients get implants and they can play each other on these games.

    I like how on that first "squares game" it would ignore the cursor at times, and simply "warp" to the square you had focused on. It seems to me that it is learning "focus" and not just cursor movement. I think a future where that is also taken into account is extremely powerful where I hadn't thought about it that way before. Thanks a LOT for showing all of this! :)

    I'm thinking Noland could be among the best FPS gamers in the world in a handful of years. No hand eye coordination required. He'll just be able to think, headshot, headshot, headshot as he sees each opponent and it's done. I know this is about the least useful task for this technology, but it just clicked for me that this is not just a workaround. This technology may very well be a lot better than the methods (keyboard, mouse, etc.) that able bodied people use. Crazy times we are living in.

    This is amazing dude. I know it's still a long while, but I'm DYING to see something like Sekiro played with your mind. A TRUE test of mastery of every input, multiple inputs, timing, decision making all in the fly. Call it a precision test. If it gets to THAT level of precision, I'd feel blessed to have witnessed such a thing in our time. I get the implant was already iterated on on monkeys, but a human with rationale is a whole different beast.
