    I had a 2000 Golf Mark IV - with a 115-hp 2.0 inline four. Engine choices in America were limited. I had it for eleven and a half years, and I would have had it longer if I hadn't worn it out! :-D I got a Golf Mark VI in its place. :-)

    The entry level 1.4 is too small for this car. 75 bhp simply isn't enough for an easy drive, too much high revving involved to drag it's weight from 0-60. The 1.6 has 105 bhp and is alot more practical for a few less mpg.

    Since it is a gasoline engine you need high revs to get going but it has 126 Nm of torque i do wonder my golf has the 1.9 SDI engine with 133 Nm of torque and 68 HP but this one has more HP but less torque i guess its just the difference between gas and diesel Diesel engines are known for outputting more torque then their gasoline counterparts My friend drives a Hyundai i30 it has i think atleast 100 HP and it can't get going unless you rev it to atleast 5000 rpm And you never know if it stalled until you look at the dash

    1.4 is slow but it beats the 1.6 on mpg and range. Only very steep hills require over revving.

    I've got mk4 golf 1.8 20v na, 125 hp 1999, since 2 years now, I love it to bits, but very sadly I have to get rid of it because of this stupid ULEZ thing, even though it doesn't have anything wrong with it, apart from leaky front shocks that's it, they want us to get rid of good cars even if they still work and buy newer cars which creates more pollution to make them and are more complicated to repair

    The 1.4 16v wouldn’t pull me out of bed. I have the 1.6 16v that is decent for what it is, it’s just my run around. I have a Mk1 Gti for driver involvement and fun, And the 2.0 8v is pretty pointless and shouldn’t be called a “Gti” as my 1.6 16v can hang of the back of it.

    Yeah my 1986 MK2 1.3 Astra Van had 75bhp, it weighed nothing so was probably faster too. Close to 40mpg if you took it easy and ran it empty.

    Terrible understeer as standard until I changed the suspension and dialled it out. I own a PD150 with a remap because for the money they give you the best combination of performance, reliability, economy, comfort and safety. Once something better comes along I'll move on. Definitely better than my MK2 GTi was, that had to go fairly quick as it wasn't comfortable for long rides. I was used to sierra's and cavaliers at the time, the handling and extra acceleration just couldn't make up for the lack of comfort and the noise. My 2.0 GLSi Sierra wasn't much slower and was quicker at the top end.

    Gearboxes were horrible until 2001 though. All DUU and DUW coded gearboxes would break down after 100k KMs or so, because volkswagen chose to build them with very cheap materials. Was fixed with 2001 and later versions though.

    I'm the original owner of a 2004 GTI VR6, 2.8L 6-speed manual. I have driven the car in Europe, South Korea and currently in the United States. Volkswagen, this is generally a good car. However, maintenance can be somewhat difficult at times due to tight spaces under the hood. Today I'm trying to simply change a headlight daytime running light on the driver's side. Two panels needed to be removed, the battery and a cover on the back side of the headlight. Afterwards I disconnected the metal retainer holding the light bulb. The light bulb is now loose inside the headlight housing but still will not come out. VW, this is frustrating. I'm almost ready to remove the bumper and headlight assembly just to change a single light bulb. There has to be a better way. I challenge your engineers to develop a more maintenance friendly Golf/GTI in the future.

    how can you complain? they stuffed a 2.8L V straight 6 in a tiny hatchback. Just get an aftermarket headlight assembly, they are way better, easier to work on, look better, put out more light. You don't have to remove the bumper. It's really not that hard or expensive.

  • @RedondoBeach2

    @RedondoBeach2

    @@bleachit42 I believe the grill needs to be removed, and possibly the bumper as well, in order to remove the headlight assembly. Do you have a link to a good aftermarket headlight assembly? I do like that idea if it's a quality product that will be reliable and durable for years and has proper fitment. The factory lights have always bothered me a little because the vehicles sold in the US, have useless bulges inside the headlight assembly in spots where I believe actual lights (possibly fog lights) would be installed on cars manufactured for sale in foreign markets. I know FCP and ECS Tuning have various options for aftermarket replacement headlights. I'll have a look. If you have a particular recommendation based on your own experience, pleas let me know why you might like a particular replacement assembly. Thanks.

    Always drove vws ,prefer mk1/2 the most ,but the Mk4 is a solid platform. Mk6 Jetta like the wife's with this trash plastic water pump deal? They've gone downhill worse than imagined being they've replaced a 100yo part that worked fine (thermostat) with a stepper motor and a valve. Mk4 was about the last of em that you can work on in the driveway most of the time.

    Knew someone who had a 1.4 Golf , and it started consume big amounts of oil, 2- 2.5 litres of oil in 2000 kms. Then the engine started to sound like a diesel, due to the valves had taken damage, since it ran low on oil. It had not done that many miles either.

    +fontheking5 I had the same problem with my Golf MK4. I bought it for £1499, ran it for 7 months, during which time I drove about 10k miles and had to use at least 6-7 1 litre bottles of oil. When I sold it, due to it being a CAT D (The dealer didn't tell me that issue the car had either...) I managed to get a pathetic £150 back in part exchange. Shocking engine.

    Forza223 Bowe It depends some models are better galvanized then others , my first golf was an mk3 from 92 , I had the car from 2010 to 2014 so the car was 20 years old but it had no rust on it , and it was perked outside all the time , after my mk3 I bought a mk4 golf from 99 and it was horrible it had rust everywhere, mechanically it is a very good car , and now I have a mk5 and a mk6 golf and the history repeats, the mk5 is perfect no signs of rust, and the mk6 has a few spots of rust .
