I was one of the many who wanted Johnson in there and for Shula to retire. I regret that decision now. Johnson was given a slew of picks for Hershel Walker. Barry Switzer won with that Dallas team. I could have won with it. Johnson wanted to quit after '98, and Huizenga was all set to hire, ironically, Marty Shottenheimer who had just left the Chiefs. Johnson then agreed to come back and stuck us with Wannstupid!

Worst mistake in Dolphins history. Pushing Shula out destabilized the franchise and it's never really recovered. We've had several talented but unstable guys running the franchise since 1995. JJ was talented, but not stable. Saban was talented, but not stable. Parcells...also talented, but not stable. All three of them quit on the team...JJ did it twice. I'm hopeful for the current regime, but need to see more than one season of close victories over weak opponents.

Couldn't agree more. Shula had more success in his last 4 seasons than any 4 year stretch since: 2 Division Titles, 3 Playoff Appearances, 1 AFC Championship Game appearance and 4 winning seasons including two 9 win seasons, a 10 win and an 11 win season. That includes losing your HOF QB for most of one season and having to play 3 other QBs to take his place in the same year - and still won 9 games and nearly made the playoffs regardless. Give me 4 seasons in a row like that and I'd be a happy Dolphins fan. All that success under Shula spoiled us fans. (Oddly enough, the closest anyone came in four seasons was Dave Wannstedt, but the Dolphins went nowhere in the playoffs under Wanny and won a single division title four seasons.)

Amen, Woodstrock15!! I'll just add one more to all your great stats. In the 21 seasons since Shula left, the Dolphins have won exactly ZERO Divisional Playoff Games. And you're also quite correct about the 93 team which was probably the best team in the AFC before all the injuries. Yep, spoiled, whining fans have cost us two decades.

Shula needed to go, the game had passed him by. He's an all time great coach, but for 14 yrs that he coached the greatest passer who ever lived, Dan Marino, he failed to bring in an adequate running back, and protected the awful DC Olivadotti, and others for years giving Miami some of the worst defenses in the NFL. Having said that, while at the time I was happy with the hiring of JJ, he did nothing to help the running game, and only seemed to want to humiliate Marino by taking away his audibles, and as a result, the fins became even more inept.

In what ways did the game pass Shula by? How come Shula had more success in his last 4 years than JJ’s 4 years? Why is is that he was our last coach to have a top ten offense which was his last year in 95? Hate to break it to you JJ was burnout by the time he came. If you look at the ways they coached it looked like the game pass JJ by more than it did than Shula. As a Dolphins fan the mere fact that Shula was our last coach to have cups on the brink of the super bowl speaks volume of the coach he was. JJ was a quitter not Shula. Shula would have never quit on the fins. So did the game really pass Shula or we’re you Dolphins fans were just saying it cause you guys desperately want JJ the snake in the grass/quitter to be the coach?

You could have both a Shula who had the game pass him by by his age then and still think it was a mistake still bringing in JJ.
