I watched you video because I had the same thing going on and my problem was a loose red wire under the dash coming from the fuse box. 1994 GMC Sierra 4x4. Look for loose red wires before you replace the starter and battery like I did. Spread the word.

Dude, 98 suburban, I have had the truck 20 years, 2nd owner, bought with really low miles, I know it pretty well. been through cables, pulled starter, good, went back through grounds connections etc. a 2nd time. I needed a neutral safety switch because my shift indicator was not lit nor the reverse lights, no big deal there, drove for 4 years this way. Sometimes crank, turn key on and off maybe 3 times maybe 23 times to crank, when it would start it seemed the amps were barely there to turn starter, seemed weak, 3 months of this, all the starter circuit relays, fuses, connections, the battery of course Pulled the flasher relay, scratched the connections with my key and replaced, kinda of pushed and re-secured adjacent harness connections on that same panel WhoLa! So far so good, I almost bought the ignition harness,,, This should be the 1st thing to clean and debug Thanks a million

Thanks so much! I was out working on swapping the radiator and hoses on my 1999 Suburban k1500. I noticed my courtesy lights weren't going off so I pulled the #3 fuse. The next day I went to start it and I got nothing so I assumed my battery was low and threw it on the trickle charger. Well, I came back and nothing. Replaced the starter.... and nothing. I watched your video and I had the same issue with the light not being on to show what gear you were in. I also got a brake light and ABS when I applied the brakes. Your video gave me the idea to look at my fuse panel and the #3 fuse wasn't fully seated. I pushed it in and everything is back to normal. What a task!

Wow I went through the same thing and it was a wire just like what you had coming from the alternator. If you put any extra load on it it would shut my engine down or when I come to a stop sign and start to pull out it would quit. I have a 95 LS Suburban and you are very helpful to me, thanks.

However, most of them talk like they have garbage in their mouth, are in a big hurry, make no sense and cannot prove anything. Thanks again this was a great presentation.

I'm having a similar problem on my pickup. It just wouldn't start yesterday. I noticed that the clock on the radio doesn't have power. Maybe it's my cables. I was also playing with the shifter to see if the transmission would engage (it's a project truck that I haven't driven yet), so the neutral safety switch may be stuck. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hey there! I am having EXACTLY the same problem with my 1999 Chevy Tahoe and after seeing your video, I also cant believe it can be the flasher relay, but more on that at the end. Here's a temp fix (Just to get it to at least start), This will take two people to do, I had someone touch (DO NOT keep it on!!!) the positive & negative terminals on the starter at the exact same time another person starts the car (cranks) & it will crank over. AGAIN...DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRE or screwdriver on the terminal, just do to get a spark!!!!! This worked for mine, to at least drive it home. There is good news though, The Solenoid IS external for these trucks and somewhat available for about 1/3rd the cost of a full starter (The solenoid is the issue). Just thought I'd let you know. BTW, my truck didn't start again this morning, but I left my truck on to run into a store real fast, luckily. I haven't replaced the solenoid yet. Now I'm pretty sure it is the solenoid (but see below). Now, after watching YOUR video I realized (forgotten about) that when I use my tilt on my steering sometimes, the lights will come on while running, shorting out pretty much everything! When I tilt it about 1/2 way back down the lights all go off & I can hear a "electrical" clicking sound under the steering console. I wonder if that can be the hazard relay (hazards & signals don't work when it "shorts" out...hmmmm)? Thanks...

I don't think it was the relay. Your close, it is behind that wiring cluster. It's probably the main B+ terminal in the Bulk-head connector on the firewall. The main B+ pin in the connector loses it's spring from thermal cycling, then the pin fails to make contact or sort of makes contact. You may have noticed the dash lights flash off then on from time to time. The Next time it happens, with the hood open reach down behind the fuse block (where the main cable from the battery goes) and grab the wires that go into the bulk-head connector. Just wiggle them back an forth, lightly. and see if she starts. I had this on my 95 2-dr, and wound up opening up the bulk-head connector and cleaned the main B+ pin and reformed the pin so that it made better contact. If I recall correctly this B+ terminal supplies power to everything in the dash, I'd have to look at the manual to be sure. Also, the brass battery post is better than the OEM Lead washer. Again thermal cycling would cause a loose connection. End result is a bad alternator, as the Avalanche diodes in the alternator do not like arcing and load dumps. Plus, as you tighten down there is a tendency to cause a leak in the side terminal which appears to have been the case in this video. Good Luck!

  • @1RoadGarage

    @1RoadGarage

    7 жыл бұрын

+Martin E Wow, thanks for all that info. It sounds like your right on. I'm going to have to research that B+ terminal you speak of. I did notice that when this would happen I would bang on that wiring cluster it would suddenly regain power and be fine. But it was dying while driving too. Would that still make sense. I've since cleaned up a bunch of grounds and replaced some cables and while it hasn't happened again, I'm still not satisfied that I've conquered the problem...

Hazard system has somerhing to do with security system. I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado and the previous owner broke the hazard lights on/off switch. This caused the Hazard lights to be constantly on. So he decided to screw a drywall bolt into the remainder of the Hazard light stub, which was still in the top of the steering column. This shoved the stub into the column and turned off the hazards. Now, the reason why I was observing this was because I had a no start with the clusterboard showing no life at all. Right before that I remember removing the drywall screw and the truck did two things. 1. The screw barely touched the metal and truck aounded the horn briefly, much like it would if I had just locked it with a key fob. The second time I turned the screw, it sparked. It all went dead. I checked the fuse box and I noticed a small fuse had blown. I replaced it and the truck was able to start again however the starter relay is exposed due to a missing cap, the one beneath the hood, though if I put the truck in the park position (safety), then put the key in the run position and then squeeze the relay, it will cause the truck to start. The turn signal assembly holds the hazards red button and this may be the culprit. The previous owner decided to mickey mouse a fix and now it left me with a faulty starting point that crosses the security system somehow.

Thank you sir, very good video and you did a great job. I have essentially the same problem but it is on a 1990 suburban. As an aside I am a bit curious if you or anyone else thinks this is sometimes a problem. Considering the computer components on the modern vehicles now and the fact that if there is a glitch in a computer component which could possibly stop some feature from functioning, I'd be curious to know if at times if the power source were disconnected as we do with our routers remember you unplug it for about 30 seconds plug it back in because it has a glitch in it sometimes you're good to go. Just a question. And it appears to me that you did not find any sort of a simple fuse for ignition and I think that's also the case with this 1990 suburban no actual fuse for the suburban ignition. And finally a little humor somewhat. Growing up in a service station I would sometimes hear that old phrase which does not apply to you you're quite a good mechanic I would say but the old phrase is this when a customer comes in you've tried to fix the problem and it's intermittent and it doesn't happen when they bring it to the station see it kind of wonder if really there's a problem at all. Here's the question I suppose maybe your wife will use this on you but it's not appropriate..: "did you check the nut behind the wheel?" Seriously you did a very good explanation there thank you for including the false repairs you did a good job of trying to track that down I'm sure your cable will be happy that it got replaced in the future and good idea checking the ignition switch. Sometimes it's almost worse when you are able to remedy a problem but don't really know exactly what it is that you did or combination of remedies that brought about the positive result. I'm 68, by the time you're my age you'll know everything about that vehicle and everything will be a snap. Keep it forever buy something else if you need another car but you'll never be able to get a new vehicle that is robust as that with actually good quality parts in it and a vehicle you can work on yourself if need be. Sorry for typos this old fart uses voice to text and sometimes we get some weird words don't have time to reread and proofread as I have to go out and try to get this vehicle started.

To err, is human,, to really foul up, takes a computer...lol . The number one cause for electrical breakdowns/failures is bad ground connection.⚡🎯 Bad grounds will cause issues with electricity feeding back through some circuits...trying to find its way back. . I’m having issues with my multi component switch (turn/wipers/brights/hazard/cruise) if the hazard button isn’t positioned JUST right, I lose turn signals/brake lights on right side only and will occasionally lose crank/ignition. Wiggle the hazard switch and it starts & runs fine.

This is a similar issue to what I have had happen on a 2010 suburban. The vehicle was running fine, was shut off, and then the next time I went to use it, it would not crank or start. All of the dash lights came on, the headlights came on, but when you pull the key out of the ignition, all of the lights stayed on, and would not shut off. The buzzer kept buzzing to tell you the key was in the ignition, even when it was not. I had to disconnect the battery to keep it from draining. Hopefully just wiggling some wires solves the problem. Any other thoughts?

And only after I started the engine, this indicator turned off. This seemed strange to me. This indicator used to come on to check and then go out before I even start the car. Then I drove a few miles and my engine died. I smelled melted plastic, but there was no smoke. And the engine lost power. The starter turned the engine, but it would not start.

I had the same issue with Yukon 2door , all of a sudden my truck went off and nothing was able to start it , So i had it towed back home and started the check, at the first thing it was the bat cables, went ahead and replaced them and again the car is not even trying to that,so i went ahead and opened the fuses and checked one by one individually where i found alot of fuses has blown off and replaced them, after that it worked fine without any issue

@@danl878 jump started from the bottom replaced starter and still had the same. I was making contact with ground somewhere. I spent 3 day with truck down last day I figured I take it to a mechanic, but first gave it one last try. I unplugged the starter wire and wrapped it in electrical tape just to be sure and re-adjusted. Finally gave it a last crank and it worked. I dont know exactly what I did(assuming it was the starter cable but hadn't had issues before) because I went everywhere under the truck. Lifted the bed since I had replaced fuel pump, under transmission, behind firewall....nothing to my eye was making contact. My recommendation ia try adjusting the starter cable and check if its damaged or seems it might need work. Good luck if you have this issue and hope you resolve soon.

My 1998 1500 just started after taking hazard relay out and putting back in, can't even lie been looking on YT and other forums the past 2 weeks had to try it at 3:20 AM just to see. Also, I did put truck in R then back in P, so I don't know which one worked =\ As of right now though no new hazard relay or ignition switch, will continue to update.

It has something to do with either ignition switch or hazard light switch or relay. Going to take mine to the shop tomorrow.
