1994 Wk 17 Miami Beats Detroit 27-20 on Christmas Night; Highlights With Radio Call

Спорт

A game I attended with my family... the Miami Dolphins and Dan Marino defeat the Detroit Lions 27-20 on Christmas night on the last weekend of the 1994 regular season. Barry Sanders was the league's leading rusher going into the game and was pursuing a 2,000 yard season - but it was Miami's Bernie Parmalee that had the big game, scoring 3 TDs on the ground. Credit ESPN and the NFL. Bill Zimpfer and Jim Mandich with the radio call.
Owned by the NFL. I post these videos purely to show the history of the game for football fans enjoyment, stemming from our family's 50+ years love of Dolphins football. Thanks!

Lions owners paid Sanders well but never expended much energy and money to build a better overall team . They "used" Sanders to draw in fans, endorsements, profits in general . It wasn't fair to Barry or to the Lions fans . If he had half a good an offensive line as Emmitt Smith had Sanders would have played longer and been the all time rushing leader . I don't blame Sanders for quitting after 8 or 9 seasons . He went out of the nfl in fairly good shape , all the more amazing with all the energy he expended and hits he took .

there was big talk of Barry Sanders going over 2000 yards for the year in this game but the Dolphins defense actually stack him up well, in the first half the Lions didn't even get a 1st down

Lions are currently 1-4 all time at Miami. After this this 12-25-94 27-20 loss, though, the Lions dropped to 0-2 vs. the Dolphins in Miami.

What is amazing to me is how much of a false impression these edited videos give you about games and the team as a whole. Here is Marino still in his prime, the greatest QB to ever play. And where is the deep passing game? From this video you would think Miami actually had a good running game and the O line to block for it. In reality they had neither. The rushing and pass catching out of the backfield you see here is because the Lions - like all the teams Miami played in the Marino era - are totally invested in stopping the downfield passing game out of fear of Marino. This leaves open the opportunity for the rb's to catch the ball and run. But the problem was that it left the offense unbalanced. The Miami receivers simply can't get open downfield. Irving Fryar was fast and great in New England, but here he is already in his 10th season and lacks his former speed; he can't get open against double coverage. Mark Ingram is small, lacks moves and was never fast. OJ McDuffie lacked deep speed and Scott Miller had nothing. Keith Jackson was a great tight end but also drew constant double coverage. Miami screwed Marino in many ways - no running game and no defense, etc. But here you can see so clearly that one of the worst things they ever did was to utterly fail to supply him with speedy, physical receivers who could get downfield after Duper and Clayton retired. It helped hamstring and squander the talents of the greatest QB to ever play and hurt the Dolphins team immeasurably.

no good reason to risk someone missing a blocking assignment pass protecting Marino when your run game and defense is playing well. That'd be the reason for not much deep passing in this game.

Dude... I watched Irving fryer go to Philly when jerky Jimmy came to steal Shulas spot. He had elite speed. Miami did have a descent running game through out Marino time, never in a single back, but if you go back and look at the run production, it was pretty good. Dopey Dan the ass who wouldn't come out to shake my son's hand when he was recovering from Leaukemia, was the cause of this team not winning with more pick 6s then anyone! Not only that, he audible too many runs into passes and kept the games unbalanced. About Dan the lesser then a man... Wayne H flew us out to see the game and arainged the meeting. Marino wouldn't compute as the PA even said, he has already done his weekly public service. What an ass. Idolize someone who deserves it!

Yes, another classic matchup with the ultimate pure passer against the ultimate pure runner...that hit by Atkins..this was when football was football...was this the year that stupid fans made death threats to the special teams coach that ended up having him be let go and then having success with the Jets......?

Bipbop66 I want to say Westhoff, the special teams coach at that time, was let go by Wannstedt after the 2000 season. He wanted to bring in his own guy he was with in Chicago (Keith Armstrong). That move didn't work out too well.

finman 1980 Yeah your right. Crosby had to go thru this without Shula. Fin fans were cruel to him. Its all water under the bridge. I have Marino games and when I don't find them on these channels, I'll unload them here later. Really nice that games are on here. Wonder if the NFL are going to remove them like before?.....

Bipbop66 If they do that I see myself watching less and less NFL games. They're pushing the long time, real fans aside for the new fans, celebrities, overpriced Super Bowl tickets and nonsense. This is the type of stuff they need to put on the NFL Network for every team.

Detroit owners didn't invest in a better overall team . they were greedy and made their profits off the shoulders of Sanders . no matter how great one man is you need a whole team . Sanders was right to retire early
