1988 Wk 15 Miami Upsets Cleveland 38-31; Highlights With Radio Call

Спорт

Dan Marino throws for 4 touchdowns as the 5-9 Dolphins upset the playoff-bound 9-5 Browns in this Week 15 matchup from 1988. During the fourth quarter Bernie Kosar is injured and replaced by former Dolphin Don Strock, who rallies the Browns after being down by two TDs. A late second bomb to Fred Banks from Marino puts the Dolphins in striking distance to score the winning TD with less than a minute left in the game. Rick Weaver and Hank Goldberg provide the radio call.

Showing my age here, but I remember recording this game. I had a great VCR and to this day, my old tapes still look excellent!!! This game got really exciting when *Don Strock* came in. He brings them from down 14 to a tie, but then Miami pulls it out in the final minute. Was a great game!!!

:50 there was no window to throw it into, how did he even manage to fit that in there? Every pass was a laser beam, MY GOD!!! Marino was the greatest to ever throw the pigskin! Other than Aaron Rodgers, no one else comes close to doing what he does!

But still. Don Strock the best relief pitcher in football. But no one throws a pass prettier than Marino. A couple of my Strock memories: He had the worst first half of his career as a starter in Cleveland vs the Oilers. Came back in the second half and won it getting them into the playoffs. Basically like a backup QB in releif of himself. The next week they played the Oilers in the playoffs and he hurt his hand early in the game. They lost. But still it was exciting. I saw him come in for relief of Griese vs the Browns. in Cleve I think it was in 79. Brian Sipe and the Kardiac Kids won it in OT. The only time I got to see the Fins live. Csonka also played.

Clayton had a big year in 1988. Freddie Banks was a good WR. Could've done a lot more but he always seemed to end up with an injury that caused him to miss several games every year.

  • @jrdurr2

I think it may have been a bit of bad timing - he was drafted during HOF'er Bob Griese's career. He started almost half the season in 1978 but then only started a handful of games after that year - and as well as he played he just couldn't keep Griese on the sideline. By the time Griese retired, Strock had become the best backup QB in the game. Oddly enough in looking up his career stats, he was 14-6 as a starter in Miami. What team wouldn't take that! Very underrated as a starter I think. But when you've been backing up two Hall of Famers, I guess it's easy to get overlooked IMHO.

If I remember correctly, this was a blacked out game because I didn't watch the game, I was a SR in High School. I didn't find out Miami won till 1st period. 88 was a shaky year, lots of blackout games, my friends that had satellite dishes were out of what my mother called driving range, meaning over 5 miles on a school night.. How did we live without the internet giving updates on the score? We just did.

We didn't have the internet but we had A.M. radio, most of the Dolphin home games were blacked out in the 80's. I would listen to Rick Weaver and Hank Goldberg most of the time when MIA played at home, 610 WIOD.

Don Strock would lead the Browns in a 2nd half comeback vs the Oilers the following week in Cleve. The 1st half he was not good. The comeback was remarkable 28-23. Then they'd play the Oilers the following week in the Wild Card Game in Cleve. Strock gets injured. Mike Pagel comes in Browns lose 24-23. A season after the Fumble in Denver. Not for nothing but i witnessed 2 fumbles at the F'N 1 yd line in the same gm this season, bears and dolphins both did it,so banks should be backhanded for not gettin that ball accross the goal line, its one thing to lose ur balance but why is the ball in his far hand!!granted guys didnt try to punch, pull or poke it out as much back then and honestly it seems like back then the ball had to cross the plane not just the nose,at least it seems that way to me,idk!?BANKS SCORE THE DAMN BALL!!!😂😂😂😂😂
