I remember this game well. I was born and raised in San Diego and this was the first All Star Game in San Diego I was alive for and I wasn’t going to miss it for anything. I was in high school at the time so not old enough to officially enter various ticket lotteries so I sent entries in under the names of several family members and amazingly won the right to buy three sets of tickets. My dad and I took the two best seats and we gave the others to friends. We actually attended both the workout/home run derby the day before and the actual game. The things that really stand out to me were watching Mark McGwire in the home run derby, and the incredible cheer and standing ovation Bip Robert’s got when he was announced, I mean the place really went crazy. Padres fans loved him and thought he got a raw deal and wanted to show how much they appreciated him. But my fondest memory of all is seeing my dad basically turn into a little kid and go crazy with pure joy when they introduced Joe DiMaggio during pre game ceremonies! It was also seriously cool seeing hometown legend Ted Williams throw out the first pitch. Even though this game probably won’t standout to most people I will always cherish these incredible memories of the few days back in 1992 that my dad and I went to the game, the home run derby and fan fest. We made sure to do it right and soak in the full experience. My father is gone now but he is always be with me through these memories.

This All-Star Game in San Diego was very strange indeed because you had five former Padres and four soon to be ex-Padres with 1987 National League Rookie Of The Year catcher Benito Santiago signing with the expansion Florida Marlins as a free-agent, Tony Fernandez signed with the Mets then was traded to the Blue Jays and won a World Series in 1993, then Garry Sheffield was traded to the Marlins for a pitcher named Trevor Hoffman who would become the major's all-time leader in saves then Fred McGriff dealt to the Braves where they would win their third straight N.L. West title in '93. The Padres had that ownership led by TV mogel Tom Werner who produced shows like The Cosby Show and Roseanne littary destroyed the Padres and there were a lot of uncertain for the franchise but the franchise was saved by Larry Lucchino and John Moores in the mid-90's they would win a the National League Pennant in 1998 and got Petco Park to save the franchise.

Blame then-departing Peter Ueberroth. The ESPN and CBS deals beginning in 1990 were made well in advance of the '89 season, and 'Uebie' felt that ESPN's Sunday night game would be baseball's 'showcase'. CBS got what it wanted, the postseason and All-Star games, and 'just enough' regular season action to fit in around golf. Bart Giamatti was too focused on Pete Rose in 89, but Fay Vincent felt he should 'do something' about CBS's schedule. The network eventually agreed to do 16 games each in 1990-1992 ,and 18 in 93. CBS, NBC, and ABC knew how to present Baseball. They knew how to balance the history of the game with the modern presentation. FOX has NEVER presented the game well and they have been holding the game hostage for over 20 years. They always use Joe Buck, who sounds like he downed a bottle Nyquil before the broadcast, and they worry more about pimping their terrible sitcoms during the game than they do about making the game interesting.

Correct Tony Gwynn was born in Long Beach CA.
Bip Roberts got the biggest applause! Dude was awesome to have on your team. I used to give him his own rookie cards when he came to card shows in San Diego.
Odd to see the Florida Marlins & Colorado Rockies logos on the outfield walls as they didn't start play until '93

I think because they started to promote the team by then before they started play I guess. Same thing with merch, because I’ve seen several instances of people wearing Marlins and Rockies gear in 1992 lol
Love watching the commercials too. Makes me feel in the moment.
This is the first all star game I ever watched as a kid...I actually taped it and kept rewatching it. I really feel like I’m back in time watching this. Thanks for uploading it.

I started taping All-Star games in 1988. When the AL won, I taped 89. They kept winning, so I kept taping. Finally in 94 I taped, but they lost.
This is amazing! Thank you so much for posting!

I agree! I love some Bip! I would see him at Kobey's Swap Meet in SD every year as a kid. He was selling a ticket package for kids. Andy Benes was always there too!
13 of these guys, including Joe Torre, would go on to play for the Yankees over the next few years.
Benito Santiago - great catcher - underrated tor sure - oh that arm!
1 year after the mega trade, all 4 players are in the game. Alomar, Carter, Fernandez and McGriff!
This game was loaded with then current and former Padres: Gwynn, Mcgriff, Sheffield, Fernandez, Santiago, Carter, Smith, Roberts, the Alomar brothers, and Kevin Brown.

Hey thanks for the upload, kind stranger
Faye Vincent had conviction and probably the leadership skills to bring the the players and owners together. I think the MLB problems started when he was booted.

Love Kirby's reaction in the clubhouse when TK suggested he bunt.
50:15 Cal Ripken Jr gets a hit off Tom Glavine, then gets tagged at 2nd by a Tony Gwynn throw to Ozzie Smith... So much greatness involved in that play!!
It's weird I was 12 when I watched this game and all the players looked old to me now i'm 43 and guys like Glavine and Maddux look like kids to me....

Sé de la historia de la MLB, de sus beisbolistas, y estoy viendo pelota desde 87, 88, y no me acordaba de esto, aunque mi hermano y yo vimos todos los ASG hasta los 2010's. Es un grato recuerdo.

Tuned in for the game, stuck around for nostalgia. These early 90's commercials are amazing.
Daddy Bush throwing the ceremonial Pitch. I miss old jack Murphy Stadium. " The Murph " & The San Diego Chicken.

Was the best thing outside of new local ownership to the Seattle Mariners that horrible 1992 Season. Man I miss those days of a young Ken Griffey Jr. and a young me. Time flies and looking back at a more innocent time before loss of friends and family really makes you long for those days…
Wish I was alive during this era....except as a Red Sox Fan the current era is the best for me personally 😉
Len Cariou, otherwise now known as Tom Selleck's Dad on Blue Bloods, did a wonderful rendition of O Canada!
Please bring back a competitive All-Star game - make worth it
Loved it!
1:15:19-1:15:55.; That song should've been put on a CD/cassette, in my opinion... As cheesy as it may have sounded for a early-1990's rap song, it worked well for me & when it comes to rap music, I'm the whitest guy I know & I'm not ashamed to admit it, either.

At 38:00 & 1:14:18 was a really good unique commercial with Rob Dibble, 34:30 Roger Clemens. 7:28 a commercial I remember as a kid age 13 and a good masculinity commercial a young man loved. At 1:05:50 Padres fans booed Santiago not knowing what they had coming for them in '93 a total dismantle of the team except Tony Gwynn who almost had a HR @59:40, a great defensive throw out @50:15 on Cal Ripkin Jr, & 2:25:16 on Travis Fryman. Also 1:15:18-1:15:54 with 55:15 were unique early 90's MLB Fever Baseball Commercials. Following an image by Dan Rather at the '92 DemoRAT convention🤮🇨🇳🇰🇵🇮🇶🇮🇷🇷🇺 @1:15:55 Also this being '92 @1:09:49 where Joe Carter drove in Roberto Alomar the first time ever for a Blue Jay it's to bad it didnot happen the prior year '91 up in Toronto at Skydome where the Jays play and the previous All Star game was played. 41:20 & 46:30 a couple previews for what the '92 WS would be & bring
And " Big Mac " Mark McGwire winning the Home Run Derby. Go" A's!!!
I was there!!!
Only Dodger player representing the NL that year Mike Sharperson getting booed lol
Safe to say Kevin Brown wasn't juicing? He should have taken his hat off when he hit, it looks like he stole his helmet from a kid on the short bus.
1:02:25 The fucking Catalina wine mixer!
Wasn't Roberto Alomar homosexual? It was rumored he spit on the umpire because he called him a gay slur.
$2.99 for a Dave's single combo with biggie fries?!!....Good times
im a tom Glavine fan and benito Santiago fan..yes Glavine pitch awful but it was great to see them again in the all star game..
I think baseball changed when CBS started broadcasting the games in the '90's. Not for the better. It just didn't feel the same. I always thought Jack Buck sucked. I really missed Vin Scully, Garagiola, Tony Kubek, Bob Costas, Bob Uecker, Al Michaels, Cosell. They were better than anything CBS put on.

Eckersley wasn't going to be "shooting" anyone after striking out Charlton. Bobby Cox should have kept a hitter or two available for this spot. Now with the DH used each year, this won't happen again.
