1992-93 NBA Altercations, Taunting, & Fights Mix (SportsCenter)

Спорт

When it comes to the describing the decidedly tougher NBA basketball landscape in the late 80's and early 90's, hyperbole abounds. "LeBron wouldn't have lasted a second against the Bad Boys." "Every single possession was a street fight." "Players coming off the bench would get punched just for having the audacity of trying to check into a game."
The thing is, basketball still generally looked like basketball back then. Smooth gameplay, defense, dunks, 3-pointers (albeit a magnitude less than we see in 2020). Every possession didn't literally devolve into a brawl.
That said, after pouring over hours of SW561's 1992-93 SportsCenter NBA highlights, one conclusion became pretty clear: the game was just as different and wild as many of us remember. Skirmishes and fights (or near-fights) were a near-every night occurrence. Players went nose to nose and freely taunted one another.
The trade-off from all these theatrics: a powder keg waiting to explode. And late in the 1992-93 regular season, after Shaq slugged it out with Alvin Robertson, after Charles Barkley winged Scottie Pippen in the All-Star Game, after Reggie Miller tried to choke out Michael Jordan, another bench clearing brawl-this time primarily involving Kevin Johnson, Doc Rivers, and Greg Anthony-finally provoked immediate reaction from the league. Prior to the start of the 1993 NBA Playoffs, the league released this update:
"Any player who throws a punch now immediately ejected from the game, suspended for at least one game, and fined an appropriate dollar amount. Any player throwing a punch that connects with another player will be ejected from the game, suspended for a minimum of one to five games, and fined an appropriate dollar amount. Teams will also be fined an amount equal to the total sum of their players’ fines. Any player leaving the bench area during a fight will be fined $2,500, up from $500, and that player’s team will be fined $5,000 for each of its players who leave the bench area."
1993 marked the gentle beginning of the end for the wild west physicality of the late 80's, early 90's NBA. There were still brawls (the Chicago JoJo English fiasco in 1994, the LJ-Zo-Van Gundy situation, Malice in the Palace, etc.) but the league slowly began reforming as the years carried on, quelling the fights themselves with increased ramifications while also going after suggested precursors to potential physical disputes in the form of a crackdown on verbal taunting and even hanging on the rim after a dunk.
The wildest thing about the 15-minute clip above? This is only what was sourced from abridged SportsCenter highlights. Most of the major fights from the 1992-93 season are included but this was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to taunting, fouling, mixing it up.
This video would not be possible without the steady efforts of SW561. Visit his channel to experience these clips in full, plus more: / @561forthewin

    Speaking of jerseys, am I the only one who is tired of Nike thinking it's necessary for each team to have a million uniforms, at least half of them not even in that team's colors, to the point you can't even tell what teams are playing in a given game anymore?

  • @Mike-kv5pl
    @Mike-kv5pl3 жыл бұрын

    The NBA back then was real fun to watch. There was an intensity that was evident in many of the game to game match ups. Many of the teams had their own identity. A lot of the star players did not really get along. You didn't see players looking to team up with their friends to form super teams. In the west, good teams like Seattle, Utah, Phoenix, San Antonio, Portland and Houston did not like each other. Of course, in the east everyone knows about the Bulls and the Knicks. Every game they played had the intensity of a classic heavyweight title fight. The intensity and physical nature of play back then is definitely not there in today's NBA. Everybody today is shooting threes.

    One of the main reasons for the lack of defense today is the NBA's will to eliminate fights, witch prompted refs to call everything in order to tone down the tension between the players. You watch a 90s ball game, and the energy, the testosterone just oozes from the screen.
