$225,000 BPAA U.S. OPEN
Woodland Bowl, Indianapolis, Apr 7-13, 1991
Pete Weber Captures 2nd BPAA U.S. Open
Pete Weber began his march toward completing a second "Triple Crown" with his third victory of 1991 in the $225,000 BPAA U.S. Open at Woodland Bowl. Weber, Florissant, Mo., won four games, including a near-perfect 289-184 championship game decision against leading qualifier Mark Thayer to earn the $40,000 top prize.
Ironically, Weber never planned to be a part of the championship round. In fact, he had checked out of his hotel on Wednesday, anticipating he would fall short of the projected cut to the top 60 - he qualified 58th. His next fateful turn occurred when he grabbed the 24th and final berth for match play, thus equaling a record shared by just nine other players (including himself) in PBA history to advance to the title from 24th place.
Weber opened the championship match with a spare and then unleashed 10 consecutive strikes, book-ending that with a 10-pin leave for his 289. Thayer, Lafayette, Ind., was the crowd's overwhelming favorite, but was frustrated for the second time this year as runner-up (he also fell as the top-seeded player to Brian Voss in the ARC Pinole Open in January), but expressed no disappointment in his $22,000 payday.
In the first game of the ABC Sports finals, Weber stopped Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 227-215. He then defeated left-handers John Mazza, Mount Clemens, Mich., 204-179, and Richard Wolfe, Arlington, Va., 236-202.
Of the 240-man field, 144 entries came from PBA's point list and 96 BPAA players earned their berths through league qualifiers. Norm Duke and Jon Juneau collected $500 as the leading pro qualifier and high BPAA qualifier, respectively, after 32 games.
CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
Pos. Name, City/State Total Amount
1 Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo. 956 (4 games) $40,000
2 Mark Thayer, Lafayette, Ind. 184 (1 game) 22,000
3 Richard Wolfe, Arlington, Va. 202 (1 game) 12,000
4 John Mazza, Mt. Clemens, Mich. 179 (1 game) 8,000
5 Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y. 215 (1 game) 6,500
PLAYOFF RESULTS-Weber defeated Ferraro, 227-215; Weber defeated Mazza, 204-179; Weber defeated Wolfe, 236-202; and in the championship game, Weber defeated Thayer, 289-184.

Pete W bowled a fantastic final game. There was nothing like watching bowling on Saturday afternoons and then right after, watching Wide World of Sports with the legend himself, Jim McKay.

I love Pete. I really do. Every chance I've had to talk to him, or interview him, away from the lanes, he's just a normal, great dude. And, prophetic? Came from 5 here to win....and last year??

At the time of the 1991 US Open, Pete Weber was appealing a six month suspension due to conduct unbecoming of a professional for conduct that he did while on probation for previous rule infractions.

Anyone have any info on what the La Mode polo's were, worn by the PBA ? I can't find anything online but only La Mode golf apparel. That must be a "Long Gone" polo shirt. eBay has nothing like that. I have to remember to myself that was 25 to 30 years ago too. I'd be a slim chance to find anything now, still in great shape. Goodwill may be the only hope but a long shot at that. Earl Anthony wore a Penguin polo.

I was bowling at that time. I think LaMode was trying to bring brand awareness to the company by producing bowling shirts. They may have already been in golf at the time. It was an upscale foreign company and I don't think the bowling demographic fit into this strategically. A couple of years later the reactive resin ball phenomenon started and the bowlers' shirts in the paddock and on TV were replaced by those repping the ball companies.

Weber is swinging to the gutter and hitting the pocket consistently. He pulls one that doesn't make it past the 8 board and it sets up in the pocket and strikes. You talk about area! And that's with a polished urethane ball. Has there ever been a shot like this in US Open history?

Maybe he never really drove 180. He probably just SAID that for the cameras. And, in those days they didn't have the mini microphones like they do now so if he's going to talk on TV he couldn't have a helmet on. They cut to the bowling center before he ever got past about 60mph.

Pete Weber is worse than Marshall Holman was with his temper. He's not impressive at all. dduval59: I don't think it's a "Hate" issue, he just needed to show some better sportsmanship. This was in 1991 when he was having his personal problems tho. I have no idea how he is today. Anyone know if he's changed any with his bowling temper ? I think he's just "Showing Off" so to speak. Guppy Troop did that but in a nicer way. Fans understood him. For a while, Marshal Holman was "Booed" although his matches. He admitted in an interview lately that he was scared to death and it was all a defense mechanism due to that reason. Possibly the same for Pete ? Who knows. Some people change, some don't, you know ?
