Cook Sizes Up U.S. Open Crown
Two of the biggest men in professional bowling, Steve Cook, a six-foot, seven-incher from Roseville, Calif., and six-foot-four Frank Ellenburg, Mesa, Ariz., hooked up in the finals of the $200,000 BPAA U.S. Open and it was Cook who emerged on top.
The burly 260-pound former national junior archery star rolled to a 245-211 victory over the top-seeded Ellenburg, who just couldn't get it going in the championship match. The win netted Cook $38,000 and a second leg in professional bowling's "Triple Crown." Cook captured the equally prestigious Firestone Tournament of Champions in 1981.
Ellenburg and Cook were joined in the finals by David Ozio, who was trying to win his second straight title, Brian Voss, and 21-year-old Del Ballard Jr.
Ozio started strongly, coming from behind to oust Ballard, 240-235, and he won another thriller from Voss, 247-236, when Voss missed on a "must" strike in the 10th frame.
Enter Cook. His match with Ozio was nip and tuck until the eighth frame when Ozio missed a 2-4-5 spare and Cook recovered from a split In his ninth frame with a game-ending turkey to shut out Ozio, 222-205.

Great bowling. Whether Steve Cook wins or loses, he is a lucky man. His wife Candi is beyond gorgeous. There was nothing like PBA bowling with Chris and Nelson and then watching WWOS with the man, the myth, the legend Jim McKay. Thanks for posting this tournament.

At 1:12:22 'Hold off a charging Ellenberger' , LOL c'mon Bo, guy was working on 5 spares. Ron Jeremy aka Steve Cook, had the match firmly in control at that point.

No, those were two different matches. The Skidmore clip was from the championship match b/t him and Ron Bell from the Showboat Invitational earlier that year (1986), while the Holman clip was from the championship match of the U.S. Open the year before (1985) b/t him and Wayne Webb. The sike-job, stare-down match you were referring to in your comment I believe happened sometime in 1984, but I'm not sure what tournament it was from.

I think that was 2 separate tournaments - I think it was Skidmore winning the Showboat (1986) and Holman winning the U.S. Open (1985). They did have a trash-talking spectacular in 1984 at the Southern California Open, though.

That match that they were showing near the end, with Holman and Skidmore... Wasn't that the one where the two players got in some kind of shouting match? (1984)

I'm afraid NB jr.'s statement that lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice is a myth. Yes it does.
