1988 XRV650 Africa Twin Recommissioning prt.1 - Strip Down, Carb Rebuild & First Startup in 6 Years

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In part 1 of a 2 video series on the recommissioning of this very rare first year 1988 XRV650 Africa Twin, we bring the bike out of storage, strip the bodywork, then remove/rebuild/refit the carbs hoping to be able to start it up for the first time in 6 years.

About to attempt the same process on my 1988 Africa Twin. I’ve been very nervous about the process but your video has helped immensely thanks.

Good luck! any questions just let me know. Take lots of photos as you strip it, and you can’t go too far wrong. Not sure if you are in the US, but it’s easier to get parts in Europe for this model. I use CMSNL. Com based in the Netherlands.

@@MCSR52 I’m actually in Australia lapping up the heat and humidity 😢. I’ve used CMSNL too but they are pricey.

This may be a simple fix. It looks like its just the drain screw on the float bowl leaking. Shut the fuel off to the carbs and remove the drain screw, be ready as the fuel remaining in the carb will empty. The screw will/should have a rubber O-ring on it, replace that O-ring and refit the screw.

Good vid, thank you. I’ve not long bought one myself with the intention of restoring it. I’ve done a few (bad) vids on it but now I’ve got it running I’m tempted to just use it until I’ve got all the parts & then do it quickly in one go. I’m sure your video will be a lot of help though, thank you 👍
